Auto Hold keeps your car’s brakes applied after you stop, so you can take your foot off the brake pedal while you wait. The feature is also called Brake Hold or Auto Vehicle Hold, depending on the car. It is not a substitute for the parking brake: stay in control, and apply the parking brake when you leave the vehicle.
What Auto Hold does
When enabled, Auto Hold can maintain brake pressure after the car has come to a complete stop. That means you may release the brake pedal at a traffic light or in a queue while the system holds the vehicle stationary. Ford describes Auto Hold as applying the brakes after the vehicle stops in its 2026 Explorer owner manual.
It does not mean the car is parked, and it does not take responsibility for supervising the vehicle away from the driver. Treat it as a convenience feature for temporary stops, not as a way to secure an unattended car.
How to use Auto Hold
The exact sequence, button location, and release behavior vary by make, model, and year. A common pattern is:

- Enable the feature. Use the vehicle’s Auto Hold, Brake Hold, or Auto Vehicle Hold control. It may be a physical button or an on-screen control.
- Stop fully with the brake pedal. Auto Hold generally engages only after the vehicle is stationary and the brake pedal has been pressed.
- Confirm it is holding. Check the dashboard indicator; do not assume the system has engaged just because it is switched on.
- Release the brake pedal only once the hold is confirmed. Keep supervising the car and be prepared to use the brake again.
- Move off as directed by your manual. Accelerator input commonly releases the hold, but the controls differ between vehicles.
For example, the 2024 Toyota Tundra owner manual describes Brake Hold operating with the shift lever in D, S, or N after the brake pedal has stopped the vehicle; pressing the accelerator in D or S releases the brake. The 2026 Ford Explorer owner manual describes releasing the brake pedal after a full stop and moving off with the accelerator. The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Getting Started Guide says accelerator or brake pedal input releases its hold. These are model-specific examples, not instructions for every car.
Why Auto Hold may not activate
Some vehicles require specific conditions before you can switch the feature on or have it engage. For example, Toyota’s 2024 Tundra manual says Brake Hold cannot be enabled if the driver’s door is open, the driver is unbelted, or the parking brake is engaged. Ford’s 2026 Explorer manual requires the driver door to be closed before Auto Hold can be switched on. Subaru’s 2024 Crosstrek guide requires the door to be closed and the seatbelt fastened.

- Stringent Manufacturing Standard: Each of our parts has undergone rigorous tests before being sold online, to ensure it has met high manufacturing specifications.
- Warm Reminder: Before purchasing, please double-check the part number and the compatible models and years to prevent unnecessary hassles of return.
Those prerequisites are not universal. If the feature will not switch on or the active indicator does not appear, keep your foot on the brake and check the instructions for your exact vehicle rather than assuming it is holding.
Auto Hold is not the parking brake
Use the parking brake when you park or leave the vehicle. Ford instructs drivers to apply it, and Toyota says Brake Hold is not designed for long-term parking. Ford also says the driver must remain in the vehicle and supervise Auto Hold. Mazda likewise warns against relying completely on AUTOHOLD in its 2024 Mazda3 owner manual.

One vehicle-specific detail: Toyota’s 2024 Tundra manual says the parking brake is set automatically if the brake pedal remains released for about three minutes while Brake Hold is active. Do not assume another car uses the same timing or behavior.
Situations that need extra care
- Steep slopes: Toyota and Mazda caution that their systems may not hold as expected on steep grades. Keep control with the brake pedal if the vehicle does not remain stationary.
- Slippery or unpaved surfaces: Toyota says not to use Brake Hold on slippery roads; Mazda cautions against slippery or unpaved roads. Auto Hold cannot create tire grip.
- Automatic car washes: Follow your vehicle’s instructions. Ford says to switch Auto Hold off or shift to neutral with the brake pedal applied; Subaru says to turn Auto Vehicle Hold off before entering an automatic car wash.
Check the instructions for your car
Auto Hold, Brake Hold, and Auto Vehicle Hold describe a similar basic function, but the control, activation requirements, indicator meanings, release method, and cautions can differ. Look up the owner’s manual or guide for your vehicle’s exact make, model, and year. The examples here come from the 2024 Toyota Tundra manual, the 2026 Ford Explorer US/Canada English manual, the 2024 Mazda3 manual, and the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek guide; they do not establish rules for every vehicle.
