The NIO EP9 is a two-seat, track-focused electric sports car built around four electric motors and four gearboxes. NIO says it produces 1 MW (1,360 PS), reaches 313 kph and can accelerate from 0 to 200 kph in 7.1 seconds. But the title’s $3 million price is not verified by the official NIO material reviewed here: a 2017 Nürburgring series report cited $1.48 million, without establishing an official list price or current value.
What the NIO EP9 is—and what its figures mean
NIO describes the EP9 as a two-seat electric sports car. The company’s investor filing says the car was developed in part to build the NIO brand, rather than presenting it simply as a consumer model. Its published specifications describe a high-output, track-oriented machine; they are manufacturer claims, not independently tested figures.

NIO’s EP9 page, its investor filing and its May 2017 announcement provide the company’s specifications and performance claims.
Why the $3 million price is uncertain
The official NIO sources cited here do not state a $3 million price or establish a NIO list price. A May 17, 2017 report from the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie described the EP9 as a limited edition and cited $1.48 million. That is secondary reporting—not confirmation of an official NIO price, a completed sale, or the car’s present market value. The evidence available here also does not explain how the $3 million figure in the title originated.

Nor do these sources establish a current sales channel, consumer-ready road configuration or road legality. The EP9’s specifications and track results should not be read as proof that it is currently available to buy or register for public roads.
The EP9’s Nürburgring lap: a dated NIO claim
NIO announced that the EP9 completed the 20.8 km Nürburgring Nordschleife in 6:45.900 on May 12, 2017. In the same announcement, the company recalled an earlier EP9 lap of 7:05.12 in October 2016, making the later claimed time 19.22 seconds quicker. These are historic results attributed to NIO; the available sources do not establish that the EP9 currently holds a record.

Track-time comparisons need more than a headline number: circuit layout, date and run context matter. NIO’s announcement specifies the Nordschleife distance and dates for these EP9 laps, but the figures remain company-reported claims in the cited material.
Two different NIO claims at Circuit of the Americas
NIO’s February 27, 2017 announcement distinguishes an autonomous run from a driver-operated one. On February 23, the EP9 completed an autonomous lap of Circuit of the Americas in 2:40.33, at up to 160 mph, according to NIO. Separately, NIO reported a driver-operated lap of 2:11.30 at 170 mph. The different modes are essential context: the two times do not describe the same kind of run.

What later EP9 appearances do—and do not—show
In a later retrospective, NIO recounts events including Goodwood in 2018 and Zhejiang International Circuit in 2021, and says the EP9 took part in more than 20 track events over six years. That is NIO’s account, not an independently audited event tally. It documents the company’s history of presenting the car at track events; it does not establish current availability or road use.
