Current reporting says the project remains alive, but its timing is delayed and uncertain. The title’s claim that riding in a prototype feels “shockingly familiar” cannot be verified from the available source material: it does not include the original ride account or establish impressions of how the car steers, rides, accelerates, sounds, or handles.
Is the electric Porsche 718 Boxster coming out?
Car and Driver reported on August 5, 2026, that Porsche CEO Michael Leiters had reaffirmed the electric 718 project. The same report said the release timing remained delayed and uncertain, and that the car might not appear until late 2027. That is a reported possibility, not a confirmed Porsche launch date. Read Car and Driver’s status report.
No official production specification sheet for the upcoming electric 718 was established in the sources available here. Its range, battery, charging capability, output, weight, price, final cabin details, and launch timing should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.
What does “familiar” mean compared with today’s Boxster?
The current international 718 Boxster page describes gasoline-powered variants. Porsche identifies the car as a mid-engine roadster with a powered soft top, performance-oriented ergonomics, and two luggage compartments. These are useful reference points for understanding the existing Boxster, but they do not confirm that the upcoming EV will share its layout, controls, or driving character. See Porsche’s current 718 Boxster page.

In particular, the evidence here does not establish whether the EV prototype felt similar in steering response, ride and body control, power delivery, driver workload, control layout, sound, or practical compromises. A first-person ride account would be needed to support those specific impressions; none is available to verify the title’s claim.

Porsche did build experimental Boxster E prototypes in 2011, but that project was not the upcoming production 718 EV. Porsche said the prototypes were used to study everyday electric-vehicle use, driving, and charging. Its historical figures describe those test vehicles only: the dual-motor Boxster E was listed at 180 kW and 540 Nm, with a 0–100 km/h time of 5.5 seconds and an approximately 170 km (107-mile) NEDC range. They should not be read as specifications or performance targets for the next Boxster. Read Porsche’s 2011 Boxster E release.

What can buyers conclude now?
- The electric 718 project remains in Porsche’s plans according to Car and Driver’s 2026 report, but no firm launch date is established by that report.
- The current gasoline 718 Boxster provides a reference for Porsche’s existing mid-engine roadster, soft top, ergonomics, and luggage provisions—not proof of how the EV is configured or drives.
- The 2011 Boxster E was an experimental program, so its figures cannot be transferred to the upcoming car.
- The claim that a ride in the new prototype feels familiar remains unverified without the original account.
