In AAA’s 2026 controlled test, the three EVs tested had a 39.0% decrease in calculated range at 20°F compared with 75°F. That is a useful indication of the possible scale of the effect—not a prediction for every SUV, route, or driver.
Your result depends on the vehicle’s heating system, starting battery and cabin temperatures, route, speed, weather, and charging and preconditioning habits. The EPA range label gives a standardized point of comparison, not a personal winter-distance guarantee. The most useful approach is to plan conservatively, learn how your particular SUV behaves in the cold, and make practical use of charging and heating controls.

How much electric SUV range can cold weather take away?
A strong recent benchmark comes from AAA’s May 2026 controlled test: at 20°F, the three tested EVs had a 39.0% decrease in calculated driving range compared with their results at 75°F. AAA also reported a 35.6% decrease in EV MPGe in that test. These are group results from a specific test, not a guaranteed loss for an individual electric SUV.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA separate AAA study from 2019 found an average 41% range decrease at 20°F when cabin heat was used. That study tested five EVs and used 75°F as the comparison baseline. It is a different test with a different set of vehicles and conditions, so its 41% result should not be combined with or treated as interchangeable with the 2026 finding. AAA’s 2026 study announcement and its 2019 test summary describe the separate results.

| Evidence | Conditions and test group | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAA, 2026 | Three EVs tested on a chassis dynamometer at 20°F, 75°F, and 95°F; HVAC set to 72°F | At 20°F versus 75°F: 39.0% lower calculated driving range and 35.6% lower MPGe | A controlled comparison for that test group; not a model-specific prediction |
| AAA, 2019 | Five EVs; comparison at 20°F versus 75°F with cabin heat used | 41% average driving-range decrease | A separate study and result, not a second estimate from the 2026 test |
AAA’s 2026 vehicles were tested under controlled conditions rather than through every combination of road speed, hills, wind, precipitation, battery starting temperature, cabin setting, and driving style. The test helps isolate temperature-related changes, but a real journey brings together variables that a dynamometer session cannot reproduce. AAA also cautions that the study’s range-based results apply to EVs only; do not carry them over to a hybrid. The AAA fact sheet provides details on the test conditions and comparability.
Why does cold weather affect an electric SUV?
Two effects matter in practice: cold conditions can affect vehicle efficiency, and the SUV uses energy to keep people comfortable. Cabin heating is especially relevant because an EV does not rely on engine waste heat in the way a conventional vehicle can. Heating method and operating conditions affect how much energy the cabin climate system draws, so two electric SUVs facing the same outside temperature may not behave alike.
Range also depends on more than the thermometer reading. A trip involving higher speeds, elevation changes, wind, or winter precipitation is not equivalent to a controlled laboratory run. Battery temperature when the vehicle starts, the route and driving behavior, and the selected cabin temperature can also change the outcome. That is why a published percentage is best treated as a planning signal rather than a fixed “winter penalty” to subtract from every trip.

What the EPA range label tells you—and what it does not
The EPA label is useful when comparing electric SUVs because it is derived using a shared laboratory method. EPA tests vehicles on city and highway cycles, then adjusts results for factors including air conditioning, cold temperatures, and high-speed or aggressive driving. The adjusted city and highway values are weighted 55% and 45%, respectively, to produce the combined range figure. See the EPA’s range-testing methodology for the agency’s explanation.
That standardized figure is not a promise of how far your SUV will travel on a particular winter day. It is not a guarantee for a specific route, outdoor temperature, amount of cabin heating, or driving style. Use it to compare vehicles on a common basis; use your own vehicle’s observed consumption and current conditions to make trip decisions.
How to plan a winter trip in an electric SUV
1. Precondition while the SUV is plugged in
If the vehicle supports it, warm the cabin and battery before departure while the SUV is still connected to a charger. This can reduce the energy drawn from the battery for those tasks during the drive. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for activating preconditioning and check whether the feature warms both the cabin and battery; availability and operation can vary by vehicle. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends preheating while plugged in in its winter driving guidance.

2. Start with a suitable charge and a route reserve
Before commuting, maintain enough charge for the expected trip rather than assuming the rated range will be available in cold conditions. For a longer drive, build in margin for a route change, a slower-than-expected charging stop, or a stretch of worse weather. The right reserve depends on your route and charging access; the available evidence does not establish one universal percentage that fits every SUV and journey. DOE likewise recommends keeping a sufficient charge before a commute.

3. Account for where the SUV is parked
When possible, use indoor or covered parking. DOE notes that this can help an EV go farther in cold weather, but does not give a universal range gain for it. Treat sheltered parking as a practical way to reduce exposure, not as a quantified guarantee.
4. Plan charging stops around the trip, not an automatic 100% target
DOE notes that fast charging commonly slows as the battery enters the 80–100% charge range. On a winter route, consider the distance to the next stop, cold conditions, and your available charging options when deciding how much to add. A stop need not automatically continue to 100% if a lower charge is sufficient for the next leg; conversely, severe cold or a long gap between chargers may make additional reserve worthwhile. Base the decision on the vehicle’s charge information and the route rather than treating one target as right for every stop.

Heat pumps, resistance heaters, and the meaning of HVAC power figures
When comparing electric SUVs, check the exact model and trim’s heating equipment. DOE says a heat pump warms the cabin more efficiently than an electric resistance heater in most conditions. Some vehicles combine heating technologies, so the word “heat pump” alone may not describe how a particular trim heats the cabin in every circumstance. Verify the vehicle’s specifications and instructions rather than assuming equipment is standard across a model line.
DOE’s 2024 technical program record reports a 38% reduction in total HVAC-system power draw at 20°F for the heat-pump scenario described in that record. This is a power-draw result for that scenario, not a claim that a heat pump adds 38% to driving range. HVAC power is only one part of energy use on a trip, and the record’s figure should not be generalized to every SUV, heater design, or set of conditions. The DOE technical program record contains the underlying discussion.

- Comparable cold-weather evidence: look for tests at similar temperatures and check whether the cabin heater was used. A result from a different temperature or test setup may not be a fair comparison.
- Heating equipment by trim: establish whether the exact version you are considering has a heat pump, resistance heating, or both.
- Preconditioning controls: confirm whether the vehicle can warm the cabin and battery while plugged in, and how the manufacturer says to start that process.
- Your charging and parking setup: account for whether you will usually charge indoors, under cover, or outdoors, and whether your charging inlet and connector are exposed to snow or freezing sleet.
- Daily-distance margin: compare your normal and occasional longer trips with a conservative winter estimate and the charging options along the way.
The evidence summarized here does not establish a current, model-by-model electric SUV ranking. A useful comparison needs current manufacturer specifications for the exact trims and test results that are genuinely comparable; without those, a ranked list would imply more certainty than the evidence supports.
Outdoor charging in snow and sleet
If you charge outside where snow or sleet may freeze around the connector, DOE suggests considering a magnetic charging-inlet cover or bag. Confirm that a cover fits the specific vehicle and connector arrangement, and follow the instructions from both the vehicle and charging-equipment makers. Do not assume that a cover is compatible just because it is sold for electric vehicles generally. This is a way to address possible connector icing, not a method for increasing battery range.
A practical way to use the numbers
For a rough planning illustration, a 39% reduction means that 100 units of baseline range would correspond to 61 units under the same mathematical reduction. That arithmetic simply explains the percentage; it does not turn AAA’s group result into a forecast for your SUV. Your vehicle’s cold-weather range can differ because the test group, test setup, route, and conditions are not identical to your own.
Start with the vehicle’s EPA figure for standardized comparison, but do not treat it as a winter route plan. As you use the SUV, pay attention to its energy use on comparable cold trips and the effect of cabin heating, speed, and preconditioning. Combine that experience with a conservative charge reserve and realistic charging stops. If you are choosing between vehicles, prioritize trim-specific heating and preconditioning details and genuinely comparable cold-weather data over an unsupported claim that one model will lose a precise share of range.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- AAA’s 2026 test found 39.0% lower calculated range at 20°F than at 75°F for its three-EV test group; it is not a guaranteed loss for every electric SUV.
- AAA’s 2019 finding of a 41% average loss with cabin heat came from a separate five-EV study.
- The EPA label supports standardized comparison, while actual winter distance depends on conditions and use.
- Plugged-in preconditioning, adequate charge planning, and sheltered parking are practical DOE recommendations.
- Confirm heating and preconditioning equipment on the exact trim, and do not mistake a scenario-specific HVAC power reduction for a range increase.
