1. Check for hazards before troubleshooting
Do not keep using a stall if its cable or housing appears damaged, there is smoke or unusual heat, the area is flooded, or another immediate hazard is present. Move away to a safe place and seek appropriate help. Do not open equipment, handle exposed wiring, or attempt an electrical repair. EV high-voltage systems require qualified technicians with proper protective and diagnostic equipment, as NHTSA’s electric-vehicle safety guidance explains.

If there is no visible hazard, follow the instructions displayed on the charger and in your vehicle. Keep any troubleshooting brief; a failed session is not a reason to force a connector or repeatedly restart equipment.
2. Record what happened and try one safe retry
Before leaving, note the station name and identifier, stall number, time, displayed error, and whether the vehicle recognized the connector. If convenient, take a photo of the error screen without delaying a safe departure. These details can help the operator distinguish a payment, hardware, software, connector-compatibility, or vehicle-to-charger communication problem. An error message is useful evidence, but it may not identify the root cause. The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation’s charging-experience material and its ChargeX work describe these kinds of failures and efforts to make error messages more consistent.

For some public DC fast-charging initiation problems, unplugging and reconnecting the connector can work. The Joint Office gives this example: “For example, the ChargeX Consortium has identified that many common charging issues, particularly in public direct-current (DC) fast charging, can be solved by simply unplugging and re-plugging the connector.” Do this only if the charger and vehicle instructions permit it and the equipment looks safe. If the session still will not start, stop retrying and contact support.
Tell the operator what happened in sequence: whether the car recognized the connector, what the charger displayed, whether payment or account authentication was attempted, and whether you followed its restart instructions. That description is more actionable than reporting only that “the charger is broken.” It also avoids assuming that the error identifies a fault in the car or the station.
3. Contact the operator responsible for the station
Use the phone number, QR code, or support details shown on the charger or in the station listing. Give the operator the stall identifier, error, time, vehicle make and model if requested, and the steps you already tried. Ask whether the stall is known to be down and whether another stall at that location is operating.

A locator or map listing is not necessarily the charger operator. PlugShare says it does not own or operate the locations it lists and advises: “For problems with a charging station, please contact the operator listed on the station directly.” See PlugShare’s explanation of its role. Reporting the fault to the responsible network is more useful than relying on a map listing alone. A locator can help you find options, but it may not be able to repair equipment, verify a station fault, or resolve a payment problem with the network.

4. Find a backup that is actually reachable and usable
Check the network’s app or support channel for current station information, then cross-check with a locator such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center station locator or PlugShare. AFDC’s locator covers U.S. and Canadian listings. Neither a map pin nor an availability indicator guarantees the equipment will work when you arrive; status, access, and payment conditions can change.
Before driving to an alternative, check the following:
- Reachability: Use the vehicle’s estimated range as a guide, not a promise. Account for weather, terrain, speed, detours, and the possibility that the next charger may also be unavailable. Choose a destination that leaves a prudent reserve rather than planning to arrive at the limit. The sources do not establish one battery percentage that is right for every vehicle and route.
- Connector and vehicle compatibility: Confirm that the station’s connector works with your vehicle, directly or through an approved adapter where applicable. EPA advises checking the vehicle connector and choosing a DC fast charger up to the maximum charging speed the vehicle accepts for the quickest road-trip charge. The charger’s advertised output cannot make a vehicle charge faster than its own limit.
- Charging level: A DC fast charger is generally the relevant option when you need to continue a road trip promptly. A Level 2 station may work if you can spare the time; it is slower. Confirm the charging level in the vehicle or station information rather than assuming every public charger is a fast charger. See EPA’s plug-in vehicle charging guidance.
- Access and payment: Check opening hours, site restrictions, payment methods, and whether an account or network membership is required. DOT notes that many public charging networks may require membership; requirements can be affected by applicable state rules where public subsidies are used. See DOT’s guidance on EV charging networks. If cell service is weak, consider whether you can authenticate or pay at the charger itself before committing to the detour.
- Current status and route fit: Look for recent operator information or user reports, but treat them as clues rather than guarantees. Prefer a station that is on your route and accessible now over a nominally closer site that is behind a barrier, closed, or uncertain.
When you have more than one candidate, compare the whole trip cost in time and risk—not just distance to the pin. A farther, confirmed fast-charging option may be more practical than a closer Level 2 station or one with unclear access. If you cannot establish that an alternative is compatible and reachable, do not treat it as a safe plan.
A practical order is to verify the operator’s current information first, then confirm connector and charging level, check access and payment, and finally compare the route with your remaining range and reserve. Network apps and station locators are useful tools for this check, not promises that a charger will be available or functional when you arrive. If the candidate depends on an uncertain detour or a payment method you cannot use, keep looking or escalate rather than treating the map result as a plan.

5. Escalate if no safe charger is within reach
If the remaining range, route conditions, or station information make continuing unsafe, call the vehicle manufacturer’s roadside-assistance channel or the roadside provider you use. Explain your location, battery estimate, and the failed station, and ask what help is available before moving the car. Coverage, eligibility, and response time depend on the provider and location; there is no universal guarantee of towing or charging assistance.
If you are in immediate danger, prioritize personal safety and contact local emergency services as appropriate. Do not attempt to reach a charger that the vehicle may not be able to reach simply to avoid calling for help.
Why a charger can fail—and what reliability figures do and do not say
A session can fail because of payment or account problems, damaged hardware, software faults, connector mismatch, or communication between the vehicle and charger. A failed start does not by itself prove the vehicle is defective, and a displayed error may not settle which part failed. Sharing the precise error and stall details with the operator is more useful than guessing at the cause.

In a report titled Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Station Reliability, Resilience, and Location on Electric Vehicle Adoption, NREL summarizes survey findings that illustrate drivers’ reported problems: a 2022 California Air Resources Board survey found that a station not working accounted for 42% of reported reasons respondents contacted customer service, and a broken vehicle connector on a station accounted for 17%. Plug In America’s 2023 EV Driver Survey found that 45% of respondents cited nonfunctional or broken DC fast chargers as a top issue. These are survey results about reported experiences, not the probability that any particular charger will be broken when you arrive; they should not be read as a current all-station outage rate. Prepare a backup without mistaking it for a road-trip fast charger
A portable Level 1 EVSE can be useful only in limited circumstances: you need a compatible outlet, permission to use it, and enough time for very slow charging. It is not a substitute for public DC fast charging on a time-sensitive road trip. Check vehicle and equipment compatibility before relying on one, and do not assume an outlet will be available wherever you stop. EPA’s charging guidance explains the difference between Level 1, Level 2, and DC fast charging.
For any trip, keep the operator’s support details accessible and know how to reach your roadside provider. A locator can help you plan, but the practical backup is a compatible, reachable station—or a clear escalation plan if the route no longer supports one.

Should I contact PlugShare when a listed charger is broken?
PlugShare says it does not own or operate the locations it lists. For a station problem, contact the charging operator identified on the station or listing; provide the station and stall details and the displayed error.
Can a portable Level 1 EV charger get me through a road-trip outage?
Only in limited circumstances. You need a compatible outlet, permission to use it, compatible equipment, and enough time for very slow charging. Level 1 is not a road-trip replacement for public DC fast charging, and an outlet may not be available when you need one.
What battery percentage should I keep in reserve before driving to another charger?
There is no universal percentage in the cited guidance. Choose a compatible station the vehicle can reach with a prudent reserve for weather, terrain, speed, detours, and the possibility of another unavailable charger.
