Test the car on a smooth, level surface, then check whether it consistently veers, whether any wheel binds when turned by hand, and whether the wheels have room to rotate without rubbing the body. Compare both sides and check the build against the instructions for the exact set before changing anything. Correct one visible issue at a time and retest; a car that drifts does not automatically have one particular faulty part.
First, work out what “won’t roll straight” means
A LEGO car can veer to one side, roll with a wheel dragging, or move crookedly because a component is rubbing. Those symptoms can overlap, but they are not the same diagnosis. A car that turns easily when you push it may still drift during a test, while a wheel that stops or scrapes when spun by hand points you toward a local clearance or assembly issue.

Start by observing the car without taking it apart. Put it on a smooth, level surface and release it without steering input. Notice whether it turns consistently in the same direction, whether it slows abruptly, and whether you hear or feel rubbing. Repeat with the car facing the opposite direction. That second run is a practical way to check whether the surface or the direction of the test is influencing the result; it is not a LEGO-published test protocol. If the apparent turn changes when you reverse the car, inspect the surface before concluding the model is at fault.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep the test simple: use the same release point and avoid adding a push or steering input that could change the path. The purpose is not to measure speed or distance, but to see whether the same symptom appears repeatedly. A consistent drift is worth investigating, but it still does not identify a particular part by itself.

Check each wheel’s movement before adjusting the build
Turn each wheel gently by hand and compare it with the wheel on the opposite side. You are looking for a difference: one wheel may bind, scrape against the body, wobble, or stop sooner. Do not force a wheel that resists. The goal is to identify where movement is restricted, not to make a wheel spin as long as possible.
- One wheel turns less freely than its counterpart: inspect that wheel’s tire seating, body clearance, axle, and bushing first.
- Several wheels rub or feel tight: compare the assembly on both sides and check whether wheels or axles have been pushed too far inward.
- All wheels turn freely by hand, but the car still veers: check the full assembly against the set instructions, including beams, pins, and any steering parts. A hand-spin check alone does not establish that the whole model is aligned as intended.
- The car slows or scrapes rather than simply turning: look for contact between a tire or wheel and the chassis, body, or nearby moving elements.
LEGO Education’s Freewheeling lesson recommends checking that wheels turn smoothly at the axles and bushings, and that connected elements are firmly linked. Use both checks: a joint can be secure while a wheel is pinched, and a wheel can rotate freely while another part of the assembly is loose.
Compare the left and right sides rather than assuming that the front wheels are responsible. A wheel at either end can rub, and a loose connection elsewhere can affect how the model sits or moves. Note which wheel behaves differently before changing the build; that observation gives you a specific place to inspect and helps keep later adjustments small.
Give wheels enough clearance to turn
Look at the gap between each wheel and the car body. A wheel pressed against the chassis can rub and lose the freedom to turn. LEGO Education’s Go-Cart lesson states: “If the wheels are pushed in too far toward the body of the model they cannot turn freely.” Compare the left and right sides rather than assuming the problem is at the front or rear.
- Identify the wheel that binds or rubs during the hand-spin check.
- Look for a visible point of contact between the wheel or tire and the body.
- Compare its position with the corresponding wheel and with the assembly shown in the instructions.
- If the build is visibly too tight, make one small adjustment that restores clearance while keeping the wheel securely attached.
- Turn the wheel by hand again, then repeat the same roll test.
Do not solve rubbing by making every wheel loose. LEGO Education’s Gravity Car Derby lesson explains that tight contact can add friction and that a small amount of looseness can help its gravity-car model roll farther. That advice is specific to the lesson’s model: it is not a universal instruction to loosen wheels on every LEGO car. The wheel still needs to remain retained, and the model’s intended assembly takes priority.
In other words, aim for free movement without sacrificing a secure fit. Too little clearance can pinch the wheel; simply pulling every wheel outward can make the assembly differ from the intended build. Check the instructions and adjust only the part that is visibly contacting or restricting movement.

Inspect the tire, axle, and bushing as a group
A wheel can bind even when it appears to have body clearance. Check that its tire is seated evenly on the wheel and that the wheel, axle, and bushing are assembled in the intended order and position. Compare the suspect side with the other side and with the instructions for the exact set. A tire that sits unevenly or a bushing that presses too tightly against the wheel can affect rotation.

Axles and bushings should allow smooth wheel movement, while connected elements should remain firmly linked. LEGO Education’s Freewheeling lesson advises checking those points and notes that extra weight may increase rubbing or friction. If the car carries added pieces or weight, remove only what is not part of the intended build and retest; do not redesign a model simply because the lesson describes a weight-related effect.
Use gentle pressure while checking components. If a wheel or tire is damaged, or a part appears to be missing, identify the set or element number before looking for a replacement. Wheel and tire combinations are not universally interchangeable: LEGO’s compatibility guide organizes pairings by connector type and points to element-number lookup. A part that looks similar may not match the required connection.
When checking compatibility, identify the connector type and the specific element rather than relying on a wheel’s general size or appearance. LEGO’s guide is organized around connector pairings, so it is a better starting point than guessing that a visually similar tire will fit. If a part number is unclear, use the set instructions or the element lookup before ordering. Do not replace an entire axle assembly if the visible issue is only a tire that is seated unevenly.
Check that the assembly matches the exact set
Compare the car with its instructions, focusing on the parts involved in rolling and steering: wheels, axles, bushings, beams, pins, and any steering links. Check that paired parts are in the same position where the instructions show a symmetrical build, and that connections are fully seated. Do not assume there is one universal steering-alignment procedure for all LEGO cars; the correct assembly depends on the model.

LEGO’s guidance on building with Technic elements warns against pushing gears and axles too tightly, because moving parts need clearance. If the car uses gears or linked moving parts near a wheel, inspect for unintended contact rather than pressing the components together more firmly. Search for the exact set number to find its instructions and compare the relevant steps before altering the design.

- Find the set number, if available, and retrieve that set’s instructions.
- Compare the wheel and axle assembly on both sides with the illustrated build.
- Check that beams, pins, and steering links are firmly connected and in the shown positions.
- Look for a gear, axle, tire, or other moving element that has been pushed against a neighboring part.
- Correct only a clear mismatch, then test again before making another change.
If you no longer have the booklet, the set number is still useful for locating the matching instructions. Be careful to compare the correct model and version rather than borrowing an assembly detail from a different LEGO car. Where the instructions show matching left- and right-side parts, use that symmetry as a check; do not impose symmetry where the design does not call for it.
Understand what axle design can—and cannot—tell you
Some LEGO car designs use a fixed axle, while others allow the wheels to turn at different speeds. LEGO Education’s Wheel and Axle lesson explains that separate axles allow different wheel speeds; its fixed-axle example is harder to steer around corners and can skid. This is useful design context when considering how a model behaves in a turn, but it does not prove that a fixed axle is causing straight-line drift.
For a car that veers on a straight roll, first look for a wheel that binds, uneven clearance, a tire or connector mismatch, or an assembly that differs from the instructions. Do not replace or redesign an axle solely because the car turns poorly around a corner. The lesson’s distinction concerns wheel behavior in turns, not a universal diagnosis for a car that tracks to one side.

Retest in a controlled way
Once you have found a visible issue, change one thing and repeat the same test. If you adjust clearance, do not also swap tires or rebuild the axle before testing. Changing several parts at once makes it difficult to tell which change affected the result, and may create a new problem.
- Use the same smooth, level surface for each run.
- Release the car without steering input and observe its path.
- Repeat facing the opposite direction to check for a surface-related effect.
- Spin the wheels by hand again and compare left with right.
- Record what changed, if anything, before moving to another suspected part.
If the wheels now turn smoothly but the car still veers, return to the instructions and inspect the assembly as a whole rather than repeatedly loosening parts. If the wheels continue to drag after correcting a visible point of contact, recheck the axle and bushing positions and look for another rubbing element. If no part appears damaged or out of place, the available checks do not establish a single cause; avoid forcing a redesign based on the symptom alone.
When a replacement part may be needed
Consider a replacement only after identifying a damaged or missing element. Note the set number or element number and check the wheel-and-tire connector compatibility rather than choosing by appearance. LEGO’s matching guide provides connector-specific pairings and points readers to element lookup through Pick a Brick; it does not make every wheel or tire a fit for every model. Availability is not established here, so confirm the part and its availability through LEGO’s current lookup before ordering.

Use the compatibility information to verify that the replacement matches the needed connector, then confirm it is the element shown for your set. Looking up a part number is more reliable than buying a generic wheel based on appearance. A replacement is not necessary just because the car veers: first establish that a component is missing, damaged, or incompatible.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my LEGO car veer to one side?
There is no single cause for every model. Check whether the same wheel binds or rubs, compare wheel clearance and tire seating on both sides, and verify axles, bushings, and connected parts against the exact set instructions. Test on a smooth, level surface and repeat facing the opposite direction to help identify a surface effect.
How do I stop my LEGO car wheels from rubbing?
Find the wheel that rubs, check for contact with the chassis or body, and compare its position with the matching side and the instructions. If it is visibly pressed too far inward, make one small correction that restores room to turn while keeping it securely attached. Then hand-spin the wheel and repeat the roll test.
Should LEGO car wheels be loose?
They should be able to move freely without being pinched, but they should remain securely retained and assembled as intended. LEGO Education’s Gravity Car Derby lesson notes that a small amount of looseness can help its model roll farther; that is not a blanket instruction to loosen wheels on every LEGO car.
Can I use any LEGO wheel or tire as a replacement?
No. Wheel, tire, and connector combinations are specific. Check the connector type and the element number for the set rather than choosing a part by appearance. LEGO’s matching guide and Pick a Brick element lookup can help identify a compatible part; confirm current availability before ordering.
Does a fixed axle make a car drift?
Not necessarily. LEGO Education explains that a fixed-axle example is harder to steer around corners and can skid, while separate axles allow different wheel speeds. That describes behavior in turns and is not proof that a fixed axle causes straight-line veering.
