Ask the repair shop to identify the failed part, provide its part number and expected arrival date in writing, and assess whether your specific car is safe to drive while you wait. Then compare any proposed substitute by fit, function, condition, warranty, return terms, delivery time and total installed cost. Aftermarket, remanufactured, recycled and salvage parts are not automatically interchangeable.
Start by confirming the part and the delay
“Out of stock” does not tell you whether the part is essential to safe operation, whether another version will fit, or when the original part will arrive. Get the details before agreeing to a different repair or making plans to keep driving. A clear record also makes it easier to compare options with another qualified shop if you decide to seek a second assessment.

- Ask what failed. Get the exact component name and part number, and ask the shop to explain how it identified the failure. If the repair involves related parts or additional work, ask which items are required and why. Make sure the estimate describes the condition being repaired, not just a broad symptom such as a warning light or noise.
- Get the supply estimate in writing. Ask whether the part is backordered, the estimated arrival date, and whether that date is confirmed or only an estimate. Ask whether the shop has checked another authorized source, such as a manufacturer or dealer source. If the date changes, ask the shop to update you rather than assuming the original estimate still applies.
- Request a written repair estimate. The FTC recommends an estimate identifying the condition to be repaired, the parts needed, and anticipated labor. Ask the shop to contact you and get approval before work exceeds the estimate. Keep the estimate, completed repair order, invoices and warranty documents. See the FTC guide to auto repair.
- Ask whether the car can be driven. Have the technician assess your vehicle and symptoms, and ask for the reasoning in writing if practical. A parts shortage alone cannot establish whether a vehicle is roadworthy.
- Ask what alternatives the shop will stand behind. Request the exact part number, type and condition of each proposed substitute, plus the warranty, return terms and delivery estimate. Ask whether the shop has verified fitment for your vehicle and whether any additional work is needed for that part.
For a useful written estimate, check that you can tell what the shop plans to repair, what part it expects to install, how much labor is anticipated, and what the expected total is. If the shop offers a substitute after preparing the original estimate, ask for the estimate to be revised before you approve the change. Approval should reflect the actual part and terms you have chosen, rather than an unspecified “equivalent.”

Is it safe to drive while waiting?
There is no general yes-or-no answer. The failed part, its role in the vehicle and the symptoms all matter; only a technician familiar with the specific fault can assess whether driving is appropriate. Ask directly whether the car should be parked until repaired, and whether any limits on use are appropriate. If the shop cannot assess it, seek guidance from a qualified repair professional rather than treating the backorder as evidence that continued driving is safe.

Tell the technician what you have observed and ask for an answer tied to your vehicle and fault—not a general reassurance based only on the part being unavailable. If the recommendation is to stop driving, clarify what you should do next and whether the shop can help arrange the next step. If the technician says operation may be possible, ask what that advice is based on and whether it changes if symptoms change. Do not guess at roadworthiness from the part’s name or from another driver’s experience with a similar vehicle.
Federal safety guidance also limits what a repair business may do: NHTSA says a business may not knowingly make a required safety system inoperative. In an interpretation addressing repairs to used vehicles, NHTSA says, “We recommend following the vehicle manufacturers advice about the repair.” That is a recommendation in the context of that interpretation, not a blanket federal requirement to use an original-equipment part for every repair. NHTSA also states that federal law permits use of an aftermarket part as long as the repair shop does not knowingly make the compliance of a required safety system inoperative. Read NHTSA Interpretation 30122.
What kinds of replacement parts might the shop offer?
Ask the shop to name the part type rather than using a broad label such as “equivalent.” The FTC distinguishes new, remanufactured or rebuilt, reconditioned, and salvage parts. The description and the protections offered can differ, so get the specific part’s condition and warranty in writing. “Used,” “recycled” and “salvage” are not enough information by themselves to establish the part’s history, condition or suitability.

| New part | Ask who made or supplied it, the exact part number and fitment for your vehicle, and whether it follows the manufacturer’s repair instructions. |
| Aftermarket part | Ask for the manufacturer and part number, fitment information, warranty, and any required programming or calibration. “Aftermarket” alone does not establish whether a particular part is appropriate. |
| Remanufactured, rebuilt or reconditioned part | Ask what work was done to restore it, what inspection or testing information is available, and what the part and labor warranties cover. |
| Recycled part | The FTC describes recycled parts as parts previously installed in a new vehicle and later made available for reuse. Ask for the part’s origin, condition, known mileage, warranty and return terms. |
| Salvage part | The FTC describes salvage parts as used parts removed from another vehicle without alteration, and notes their reliability is seldom guaranteed. Ask for origin, known mileage, condition, inspection details, warranty and return terms. |
These descriptions do not establish that one category is suitable for every repair. A used part may be available sooner or cost less, but its history and coverage may be more limited. Ask what the seller or shop can document about the exact item being offered, and whether the part is represented accurately as new, rebuilt, reconditioned or used. The FTC’s guide to rebuilt, reconditioned and other used automobile parts addresses how used parts should be represented. Ask the shop to put the offered part’s condition and terms on the estimate or repair order.

A salvage-yard part can be a possible option, but the label does not tell you whether it will work for your repair. Ask where it came from, its condition, mileage if known, what inspection or testing information is available, and whether it has a warranty or can be returned. Because the FTC notes that salvage-part reliability is seldom guaranteed, do not treat a lower price or quick availability as a substitute for understanding the limitations. Have the repair shop explain whether the part is appropriate for your vehicle and whether it will stand behind installation.
How to compare a proposed substitute
Compare each option for this vehicle and this repair, not just by price or the label on the box. Ask the shop to explain any difference from the originally specified part and whether the proposed option is compatible with the manufacturer’s repair guidance. If there is more than one option, compare them on the same points so that a shorter delivery estimate or lower quoted part price does not hide a difference in coverage or installed cost.
- Fit and function: Confirm the exact part number or documented fitment and whether the part performs the required function on your vehicle. Ask the shop to verify compatibility for the specific vehicle and repair rather than relying on a similar description or appearance.
- Safety role: Ask whether the component is part of a required safety system, and how the substitute and repair will preserve that system’s function. A part’s category does not itself establish that the completed repair will preserve safety-system compliance.
- Manufacturer repair guidance: Ask whether the vehicle manufacturer has repair advice relevant to the job and whether the proposed option follows it. NHTSA’s recommendation to follow manufacturer advice appears in the context of an interpretation concerning a used-vehicle repair; it should not be recast as a universal OEM-only rule.
- Condition and history: For a used part, ask where it came from, its condition, mileage if known, and what inspection or testing was performed. Ask whether any limitations are known and have those terms recorded.
- Warranty and returns: Clarify coverage for the part and labor, the warranty period and exclusions, and whether the part can be returned if it does not fit or resolve the problem. Find out who handles a warranty claim and what documentation you should keep.
- Complete installed cost: Confirm whether the quote includes installation and any necessary related replacement work, programming or calibration. Ask about extra charges before approving them. Compare total installed cost, not simply the part price.
- Timing: Compare the expected arrival date, including whether the estimate is confirmed, against the option’s cost and terms. Ask whether the shop will notify you if the date changes.
A qualified shop should be able to explain why it considers a particular substitute suitable for the specific repair. It should also be able to identify what is and is not included in its estimate. If it cannot identify the part or explain how it meets the repair requirements, ask for clarification before authorizing the work. If the explanation remains unclear, you can ask another qualified shop to review the diagnosis and part number; do not assume a similarly named item will fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWill an aftermarket or recycled part void the vehicle warranty?
Using an aftermarket or recycled part does not, by itself, void a vehicle warranty, according to the FTC. A warrantor may deny coverage for damage it proves was caused by a defective part or improper installation. Keep the estimate, repair order and invoices, and ask the shop to document the part used and its warranty. For details, see the FTC guide to auto warranties and service contracts.

That distinction matters: the use of a non-OEM part alone is different from a claim that a particular part or installation caused damage. Ask what warranty applies to the replacement part and labor, and keep the records that show what was installed and who performed the work. The FTC guidance does not mean every repair or every part is covered by the vehicle warranty; a warrantor may deny coverage for damage it proves resulted from a defective part or improper installation.
Does the replacement part have to meet a federal standard?
Some replacement equipment has specific federal standards. NHTSA identifies lamps, tires, windows and windshields, brake hoses, and seat belt assemblies among the equipment for which standards apply. Ask the shop whether a standard applies to the part in your repair and how the proposed part complies. Do not assume that the rules for one type of replacement equipment apply to every automotive part.
Do not infer a safety rating from the absence of a particular testing requirement. In an older interpretation, NHTSA said federal crash standards do not require replacement fenders, bumpers or hoods to undergo crash testing. That statement is not a safety assessment of any specific part, nor does it establish that a particular replacement is right for a vehicle. The relevant guidance is in NHTSA Interpretation 30122 and NHTSA Interpretation 14247.ogm.
What to do if the delay or proposed part is unacceptable
If the arrival estimate is too uncertain, the proposed part’s condition or warranty is unclear, or the quote does not cover the full repair, pause before authorizing that option. Ask the shop to revise the written estimate or explain the alternatives it can source. You can also seek another qualified shop’s assessment and availability using the exact part number and repair details; do not assume a part with a similar description will fit.

When asking another shop, share the diagnosis, exact part number and the estimate you have, while making clear that you want an assessment of the same repair. Ask whether it can source the specified part or a suitable alternative, and compare its proposed part type, delivery timing, warranty, return terms and complete installed cost. A different shop may have a different sourcing option, but availability and suitability need to be verified rather than assumed.
Save the written estimate, repair order, messages about approval, invoices and warranty paperwork. This gives you a record of what was diagnosed, which part was installed, what work was authorized and what the shop promised. Federal consumer and safety guidance is not vehicle-specific repair advice, and state law or current repair procedures may add requirements.

Can I use an aftermarket part instead of an OEM part?
Possibly, but the label alone does not establish that a part is suitable. Ask the shop to verify fitment and function for your vehicle, explain how the part relates to manufacturer repair guidance, and identify any needed programming or calibration. NHTSA says aftermarket parts are not prohibited per se in used-vehicle repairs if the shop does not knowingly make a required safety system inoperative; this is not a finding that every aftermarket part is appropriate for every repair.

Will a recycled part void my vehicle warranty?
Not by itself, according to the FTC. A warrantor may deny coverage for damage it proves was caused by a defective part or improper installation. Keep the estimate, repair order and invoice, and ask the shop to record which part was installed and what warranty applies.
Is it safe to drive while waiting for a replacement part?
There is no general answer based on the backorder alone. Safety depends on the failed component, its role and your vehicle’s symptoms. Ask the technician responsible for the repair whether your specific car should be parked or can be driven, and ask for the reasoning. If the shop cannot assess the fault, seek advice from a qualified repair professional rather than guessing.
Can a salvage-yard part be reliable?
It depends on the specific part and its history, condition and coverage. The FTC describes salvage parts as used parts removed from another vehicle without alteration and says their reliability is seldom guaranteed. Ask for the part’s origin, known mileage, condition, available inspection information, warranty and return terms, then have the shop explain whether it is suitable for your repair.

The Bottom Line
When a car part is out of stock, do not choose by label or price alone. Get the failed part and backorder estimate in writing, ask a technician whether your specific vehicle is safe to drive, and compare any alternative by fit, function, condition, warranty, returns, timing and total installed cost. Keep the estimate and repair records, and authorize only the part and work you understand.
