If charging begins but the power is low, compare the car’s limits, battery temperature and state of charge with the charger’s rating. If the session stops, follow the car and charger’s instructions to end it before reconnecting; never force a connector that will not release.
First, tell a startup delay from a charging problem
After you plug in, the vehicle and charger may need a few minutes to establish a session. A short pause by itself does not prove that charging has failed. During that time, look at both displays: the charger may show that it is starting or waiting for authorization, while the car may show a connection or charging status. Electrify America’s guidance says a session can take a few minutes to start.

Use the displays to identify what is happening rather than relying on the cable or a single number. Is the charger still working through startup? Is there an authorization prompt? Does either screen show an error? If the equipment requests payment or another form of authentication, complete that step using the method offered at that station. Activation methods differ by charger and network, so do not assume that an app, card, or in-car control works everywhere.

- It asks for authorization: Follow that charger’s payment or network instructions.
- It displays an error or the session ends: Read the alert on both the car and station, then use the recovery steps below.
- The session is active but power is low: Check the vehicle and battery factors before treating the reading as a fault.
There is no universal wait limit in the official guidance reviewed. If the displays stop progressing, request an action, or report a fault, follow their instructions instead of waiting indefinitely.

Check whether the power level is actually abnormal
The kilowatt rating printed on a fast charger is its maximum capability, not a guaranteed rate for every vehicle. The car requests power, and the rate it can accept depends on the vehicle’s capability, the charger’s capability, battery temperature, battery condition and current state of charge. A low reading therefore needs context: compare what the car can accept with what the station can supply, then consider the battery’s current conditions.
Compare the car and charger limits
Check the vehicle’s owner information for its maximum DC charging capability and compatible connector. Then compare those details with the connector and power rating shown for the station. A station offering more power than the car can accept does not make the car charge at the station’s full rating. Connector compatibility also matters: use only a connector supported by both the vehicle and the charging equipment.
Electrify America describes some of its charger categories as offering up to 50 kW, 150 kW or 350 kW, depending on the charger. Its getting-started information lists its CCS connectors as supporting up to 350 kW and CHAdeMO connectors up to 50 kW. These are ratings for Electrify America equipment and connectors, not a promise that a particular vehicle will receive that power or a description of every network’s stations. Check the rating displayed on the specific unit you are using.

Consider battery temperature
A battery that is cold or hot may charge less efficiently. Some EVs can precondition the battery: the feature prepares it toward a suitable temperature for charging. Availability and operation vary by model, and not every EV has preconditioning. Consult the owner information for your car to see whether it supports the feature and how to use it; do not assume that a setting or route-planning behavior from another model applies to yours.
Consider the state of charge
Fast charging often slows as the battery fills, frequently around 80% state of charge, but the point and behavior vary by vehicle. A falling kilowatt reading near a high state of charge is not, on its own, evidence of a fault. Check the car’s current charge level and charging display before deciding that a taper is abnormal. Do not expect a single percentage threshold to describe every EV.
If power is low, use this comparison checklist
Work through these checks in order. They separate an expected limit or taper from a problem that is more likely to need equipment or vehicle support.

- Read the car’s charging display. Note the current power and state of charge, and look for a vehicle alert. The car’s own display is important because the vehicle controls how much power it requests.
- Check the station’s stated connector and maximum power. Confirm that the connector is compatible with the car, and compare the station rating with the vehicle’s documented DC charging capability.
- Account for battery temperature. If conditions are extreme and the vehicle supports battery preconditioning, consult its instructions about preparing the battery. The available guidance does not establish one preconditioning procedure for all cars.
- Look at the state of charge. If the battery is already well charged and the vehicle’s power is tapering, this may be normal for that model. The exact taper behavior varies.
- Look for a fault message. A specific error or a stopped session calls for the recovery process below, rather than an assumption that low power is simply normal.
This comparison is more useful than judging the session against the charger’s headline kW rating alone. The same low reading can have different explanations depending on whether the vehicle is near a high state of charge, has a temperature limitation, cannot accept the station’s maximum, or is showing an equipment or vehicle alert.
If the session errors or stops
Read the messages on both the vehicle and charger, and follow the instructions shown for that session. A stopped session can involve authorization, the connector, the vehicle, the station or the network; the displayed alert is a better starting point than repeatedly unplugging or restarting without checking what the equipment requests.
End the session safely before reconnecting
The exact restart procedure depends on the network and vehicle. For Electrify America specifically, its guidance is to end the active session in the app or at the charger, unplug the cable—unlocking the car if necessary—reconnect it, and start a new session. A new attempt may require payment authorization again. Do not treat that sequence as universal: use the current instructions on other networks and the vehicle’s own prompts.

Once the session is ended, check that the cable is properly connected before starting again. If the charger or car reports an incomplete connection, follow its instructions rather than forcing the handle into place. Do not unplug during an active session unless the equipment or vehicle directs you to do so.
Change equipment if the fault remains
If the same error persists after following the network’s restart instructions, try another charger or connector if one is available and safe to use. Electrify America advises trying another charger and calling the assistance number shown on its equipment when the problem remains. The posted support contact is specific to that station and network.

Tesla’s vehicle manual illustrates why the alert matters: loss of station power or interrupted communication can prevent charging, and an equipment fault may be isolated by trying another station. The manual also describes incomplete insertion and vehicle-side charge-port issues. Those examples explain possible categories of failure, but Tesla alert wording and instructions do not necessarily apply to other EVs. Use your own vehicle’s alerts and manual.

If the connector will not release
First confirm that the charging session has ended on both the vehicle and station. Then follow the release procedure in the vehicle’s owner manual; the steps and controls are not identical across models. If the car must be unlocked or the charger needs a particular end-session action, use the instructions for your equipment.
ChargePoint’s official stuck-connector guidance is explicit: “Never force the connector or use tools to remove it.” Forcing it can damage the cable or charge port. If the connector remains stuck after you have ended the session and followed the vehicle’s release instructions, contact the charging network or vehicle maker for help rather than trying to pry it free.
Work out whether the station or vehicle is more likely at fault
A single failed attempt does not prove which part of the charging system caused the problem. A useful diagnostic distinction is whether the issue follows the car or stays with one piece of equipment.

- The car charges successfully at another station: The original station or connector becomes a more likely explanation.
- The problem occurs across different equipment: A vehicle-side issue becomes more plausible. Check the car’s alerts and follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
- The evidence is inconclusive: Record the details and ask the network or vehicle support team to help identify the event.
When contacting support, provide the station ID, connector number, time of the attempt, exact displayed error, vehicle state of charge and approximate charging power. Those details help distinguish a station-specific incident from a behavior that repeats with the vehicle. Use the network number posted on the equipment for station problems; use the vehicle maker’s support guidance for a problem that persists across different stations.
What not to assume
- Do not assume the charger’s maximum is your car’s expected speed. The vehicle requests power and may be limited by its capability or current battery conditions.
- Do not assume a pause of a few minutes means failure. Check whether the screens show startup or authorization progress.
- Do not diagnose a fault from taper near a high state of charge alone. Charging often slows as the battery fills, with the pattern varying by model.
- Do not apply one network’s restart sequence to every charger. Follow the station and vehicle instructions for the equipment in front of you.
- Do not force a connector or use tools to remove it. End the session and use the car’s release procedure.
Charging behavior, connector-release methods, alerts, payment steps, support contacts and station conditions vary by vehicle and network. For model-specific diagnosis, the owner manual and current instructions on the charger take precedence over general troubleshooting advice.
