Tesla’s public charging guidance explains how to find a site, plug in and troubleshoot a charging session, but it does not publish a roadside recovery or towing procedure for a truck that cannot reach a stall. Do not try to force the truck into a maneuver it cannot safely complete, and do not assume a passenger-car charger can serve as a fallback.
First decide what “too little range” means
The right next step depends on whether the truck is already at the site and can reach a stall, or whether it cannot safely get into charging position. A third situation is reaching a stall but not having enough charge for the next destination. These are different problems: Tesla publishes instructions for operating and troubleshooting a Megacharger, but not a special roadside recovery procedure for a Semi stranded before it can reach one.

- At the site, with a safe path to an open stall: check the live stall information, approach only if the truck can safely maneuver, and connect the handle.
- At the site, but unable to reach or maneuver into a stall: stop where safe and contact the fleet manager. Tesla’s public instructions do not specify how to recover the truck in this situation.
- Charging, but worried about the next leg: use Trip Planner and the touchscreen’s charging estimate to assess the route and required charge; the fleet manager’s charge limit also applies.
The remaining steps below are for the first and third situations. They should not be read as a Tesla-approved recovery plan for a truck that cannot safely reach a stall.
Check the site before moving toward a stall
Use the map on the Semi touchscreen or in the Tesla app and select the Megacharger pin. Tesla says the map displays the site address, distance and number of available stalls. Opening the pin may show directions to the stalls, gate codes and other site instructions. Check this information before committing the truck to the entrance or a stall approach, then check availability again as you get closer: Tesla does not support stall reservations, so an opening shown earlier is not reserved for your truck.

Most Megacharger stations are open 24 hours, but any restricted charging hours appear in the site information. Nearby amenities may have separate hours. Site pricing varies and may depend on the time of day or site occupancy; Tesla’s public guidance does not establish one universal price.
All Megacharger sites allow charging with a trailer attached, although most require a back-in maneuver. Trailer compatibility does not make every approach safe for every truck, trailer or site position. Do not attempt a back-in or other maneuver the truck cannot safely complete. If the route into the site or the approach to a stall is not safe, stop where safe and contact the fleet manager rather than improvising a recovery maneuver.
If the Semi can safely reach a stall
- Confirm that the stall is available and accessible. Use the current map information and site directions. Do not rely on a reservation; Tesla does not offer stall reservations.
- Connect the Megacharger handle. Insert it into the Semi’s charge port. Tesla says charging begins automatically.
- Check that charging has actually started. Watch the truck’s charging status rather than assuming a connected handle means the session is underway. If it does not start, use the troubleshooting sequence below.
- Review the truck’s charge limit and estimate. The fleet manager sets a charge limit for each truck, and the driver cannot charge beyond it. Use the touchscreen’s remaining-time estimate and Trip Planner to judge whether the planned charge is appropriate for the next leg.
Tesla advertises Megacharger power of up to 1.2 MW and says the charger can recover up to 60% of range in 30 minutes. Those are maximum product claims, not a promise about the rate or range any particular truck will receive in a given session. Tesla says actual charging speed depends on battery level, battery temperature and whether another truck is charging at the same Megacharger. Use the truck touchscreen’s remaining-time estimate for the current session.

Tesla says charging speeds are slower above 90% and recommends not charging beyond that level unless the upcoming route requires it. Trip Planner can help estimate the charge needed to reach the destination. The public guidance does not give one fixed charge target for every route, because the decision depends on the route and the truck’s circumstances.
If the handle is connected but charging does not start
Tesla’s published troubleshooting sequence is specific. Follow it in order if the truck is safely parked at a stall:
- Contact the fleet manager and confirm that the Semi is listed in the owning fleet’s Tesla for Business account. The truck must be associated with that account to Megacharge.
- Check that the handle is fully seated in the charge port. Tesla says an amber light on the handle indicates that it is not fully connected.
- Press and hold the handle, unplug it, wait 30 seconds, then reconnect it.
- If automatic charging still does not begin, try another open Megacharging stall if the truck can safely move to it.
Do not use a damaged stall if it is leaking fluid, has a cracked handle, or has a cut or loose cable. Tesla directs drivers to call Tesla Service at 1-877-798-3752 and provide the site, stall number and observed damage.

If the truck cannot safely reach a stall
Do not treat the charging instructions as permission to push, tow or otherwise move a Semi that cannot safely reach a stall. Tesla’s public Semi Charging page does not say what a driver should do when there is too little charge to reach a safe parking position or an open stall, and it does not publish a Semi-specific roadside recovery or towing protocol.

The cautious immediate action is to stop where safe and contact the fleet manager for operational direction. This is general safety-minded guidance, not a recovery procedure quoted or prescribed by Tesla. The public charging instructions do not establish whether a particular site has a safe place to wait, who can recover a truck, or what equipment or service should be used. Do not infer a remedy from the availability of a nearby passenger-car charger: Tesla says those chargers are incompatible with Semi.
Why a passenger-car charger is not a fallback
Tesla says Superchargers and Wall Connectors are designed for passenger vehicles and are not compatible with Semi. Tesla also says its Megacharger sites currently support Tesla Semi trucks only. That leaves no supported alternative charger type for a Semi in Tesla’s public charging instructions. If a truck cannot safely reach an available Megacharger stall, use the fleet’s operational escalation process rather than diverting to a passenger-car charging connector.

Plan the charge and the next leg
Tesla advertises the Semi with up to 500 miles of estimated range. “Up to” is not a guarantee of a particular truck’s arrival charge, and it does not establish that a stall will be open when the truck reaches a site. Tesla recommends using Trip Planner to estimate how much charge is needed to reach the destination. Consider the map’s live stall count, site access instructions, distance and displayed hours when choosing among the Megacharger options shown for the route.
The route decision should account for the truck’s actual situation, not just its advertised maximum range. Battery level and temperature affect charging rate, another truck using the same Megacharger may also affect rate, and the fleet manager’s charge limit may constrain the session. The touchscreen’s remaining-time estimate is the relevant in-session indicator; the public materials do not provide a universal number of minutes or a guaranteed range gain for an individual truck.

Finish the session and clear the stall
When charging is complete, press and hold the button on the Megacharger handle, remove the handle and return it to the charger. If the handle will not release, Tesla says to unlock the Semi and try again; do not force it. Move the truck so the next driver can use the stall. Tesla says the first five minutes after charging completes are waived from idle fees, and fees accrue until the truck is moved.
What the public guidance does—and does not—settle
Tesla Support’s Semi Charging guidance, accessed in 2026, covers locating sites, starting a session, troubleshooting a failure to start, charging limits, site use and ending a session. It does not specify a special response when a Semi arrives with too little range to reach a safe parking position or open stall. It also does not provide a roadside recovery protocol for that case. The practical distinction is important: the driver can use Tesla’s published procedures once the truck can safely reach a stall, but a truck that cannot do so needs operational direction from its fleet manager.
Tesla and Pilot Company announced that their first Megacharger site had opened and that three additional locations were opening soon, with planned locations along major freight corridors. Such deployment information can change. Check the live map for the specific route rather than treating an announcement as proof that a particular site is open or has an available stall.
