This is a general checklist; use the vehicle’s owner’s manual and local rules for model-specific and legal requirements.
A dealer’s pre-delivery inspection is not a substitute for checking the exact vehicle and documents being handed to you. You do not need specialist equipment for the basic checks below: work methodically, ask the seller to demonstrate unfamiliar controls, and do not ride until safety and legal requirements are clear.

1. Prepare the handover area and confirm the vehicle
Ask the seller to identify the make, model, variant, and colour being delivered. Compare those details with your order and invoice before the vehicle is unloaded or accepted. This first check helps catch a difference in trim or variant before you spend time inspecting the wrong vehicle. Arrange the inspection in a well-lit place with enough room to walk around the two-wheeler safely. Keep the invoice, owner’s manual, and any papers supplied by the dealer beside you.

2. Match the vehicle’s identifiers to its paperwork
Locate the frame or chassis number and engine number. If you cannot find them, use the manual or ask the dealer to point them out. Compare each number on the vehicle with the invoice and with any registration, insurance, warranty, or service records already provided. BikeDekho recommends checking the identifiers across the vehicle and dealer documents, while ICICI Lombard notes that accurate engine and chassis details matter for policy records (BikeDekho; ICICI Lombard).
Compare the characters carefully rather than relying on a quick visual glance. If a number is difficult to read, ask the dealer to show you the location and confirm the entry against the original record. Do not assume a mismatch is a harmless typing error: the relevant documents should consistently identify the specific vehicle being handed over.
Also check that your name and the vehicle description are consistent across the papers you receive. Keep the purchase invoice and payment evidence, policy document if issued, registration paperwork supplied at handover, warranty details, service schedule or book, and owner’s manual. Which documents must be issued, and when, depends on the transaction and local requirements; there is no universal delivery deadline established here. Make a note of any document the seller says will follow, including what it is and how it will be provided.

Stop and resolve a mismatch before signing or relying on the affected document. Ask the seller to correct the record or explain the discrepancy in writing. A mismatch is not something to leave for a later service visit, because the paperwork should describe the exact vehicle being handed over.
3. Record the odometer and inspect the exterior
Note the mileage without assuming a universal limit
Photograph or write down the odometer reading at handover, ideally with the display and vehicle visible in the same set of records. A new vehicle may show a few kilometres from logistics and handling, so that alone does not prove a problem. If the reading seems unexpectedly high, ask the seller to explain it and record the explanation; no universal acceptable reading is established for every delivery. Do not treat a particular number as an automatic pass or fail.

Walk around both sides
Inspect the paint, body panels, mirrors, lamps, seat, wheels, and visible fasteners. Look for scratches, dents, cracks, loose fittings, uneven panel gaps, paint differences, or signs of repair. Check both sides and the front and rear rather than relying on a quick look from one angle. Open or move only those parts the manual or seller indicates are appropriate to check. Photograph any mark or damage while the vehicle is still with the seller. Include enough context to show where it is on the vehicle, then ask for the issue and proposed remedy to be written on the handover record or another document you can keep. This makes it easier to distinguish a pre-existing delivery issue from damage noticed later.

4. Check tyres, wheels, and pressure
Look over each tyre for visible cuts, punctures, deformation, or other damage, and inspect the wheels for obvious dents or defects. Ask the dealer to confirm tyre pressure against the specification in the exact model’s owner’s manual. There is no single pressure that applies to all motorcycles and scooters, and the correct figure can depend on the particular model and instructions. A tyre-pressure gauge can help, but it is optional; the manual’s specified pressure is what matters.
Tyre sidewalls carry manufacturing information, commonly including a four-character week-and-year code. If you are unsure how to interpret it or what is appropriate for the particular vehicle, ask the dealer or manufacturer instead of treating a date alone as proof that the tyre is acceptable or unacceptable (BikeDekho). Do not reject or approve a tyre based on an assumed universal age threshold; the reviewed guidance does not establish one.
5. Test basic controls and functions
With the vehicle stable, follow the owner’s manual and ask the seller to demonstrate unfamiliar controls. Check the items that apply to your model:

- Starter and engine start, where applicable.
- Throttle movement and return, brakes, mirrors, and steering movement.
- Clutch, if fitted, and other model-specific controls.
Check that controls respond normally and that visible fittings are secure. For lights and indicators, confirm that the expected lamps illuminate; ask the seller to operate the controls if you are unsure of the sequence. Check the brakes according to the manual while the vehicle is stationary and stable. Do not improvise tests that could make the vehicle move or put anyone at risk. Scooters, electric two-wheelers, and different engine designs require different checks. Do not open covers or handle components just to complete a generic list; the manual is the authority for the vehicle in front of you. If a level or warning indicator raises a concern, ask the dealer to explain and resolve it before handover.
6. Confirm the handover kit and paperwork
Compare the items supplied with the delivery list or owner’s manual for the exact make, model, and variant. Check for the keys, owner’s manual, tool kit, standard accessories, and any additional items promised in your order. Check that the number and type of keys match what the seller says is included, and ask the seller to identify model-specific tools or accessories if you cannot tell what they are. Do not assume a particular item is standard across all brands.
For example, a delivery certificate in the Bajaj CT125X owner’s manual lists two keys, a tool set, a first-aid kit, standard accessories, and battery and tyre details. That is a model-specific example, not a universal two-wheeler handover standard (Bajaj CT125X owner’s manual). If an item was promised separately, compare it with your order or written agreement and ask the seller to record any omission and the agreed follow-up.
Get the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle and review its initial operating, maintenance, and safety instructions. The manual can help you locate the identifiers, understand the controls, and find the specified tyre pressure and relevant checks. Honda’s manual portal, for example, lets owners look up manuals by model and year or by VIN/frame number; the portal notes that the number may also appear on registration, insurance, or sales/service documents (Honda owner’s manuals).

Keep the warranty terms and scheduled service information with your purchase papers. Warranty duration, conditions, and service requirements vary by manufacturer, model, and market. Note where the schedule says to get service and keep the information needed to follow it; do not assume another brand uses the same conditions.

Separate urgent concerns from items that can be addressed through a documented remedy. A non-working brake or lamp, damaged tyre, loose safety-related part, or uncertain vehicle identity warrants stopping the handover process until the seller addresses the issue. A cosmetic mark or missing promised accessory may not make the vehicle unsafe, but it should still be documented before you accept the vehicle as satisfactory. The distinction is practical, not a guarantee of a particular legal remedy.
- Photograph the issue and note where it appears or which control fails.
- Tell the seller while the vehicle and handover papers are present.
- Ask for the issue, agreed correction, and any promised timing to be recorded in writing.
- If the issue is safety-critical or an identifier/document mismatch, do not treat a verbal assurance as a completed correction. Wait for the seller to address it or provide a clear written resolution before proceeding.
- Do not sign wording that says the vehicle was delivered to your satisfaction while a material issue remains undocumented.
- If the dealer does not resolve the matter, use the manufacturer’s customer-care channel and keep copies of your communications. BikeDekho similarly advises raising delivery issues with the dealer and escalating through the brand’s customer care if needed (BikeDekho).
Available remedies and any right to reject or demand repair depend on local law, the contract, and the nature of the problem. The checklist does not establish a universal legal remedy or repair deadline, so check the rules that apply where you bought the vehicle. Whether an issue is corrected before handover or the dealer promises a later remedy, retain a written record of exactly what was found and agreed.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a few kilometres on a new two-wheeler’s odometer normal?
