When a new car has no long-term reliability record, treat its dependability as unknown—not automatically poor or good. Check official safety records for both the model and the specific vehicle, compare its powertrain and major systems with established alternatives, and read the warranty for your market. Those checks can reduce uncertainty, but none can replace years of ownership data.
Why a new model’s reliability is still an open question
Long-term dependability takes time to measure. J.D. Power describes its U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) as measuring problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles across nine system categories. A recently launched model cannot yet have that three-year ownership history, so it may be absent from mature dependability results or represented only after several years have passed. J.D. Power’s VDS study page explains the study’s scope.

Launch-cohort data offer useful context, but not a verdict on any one vehicle. In its 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, J.D. Power reported that four of 27 models launched for the 2022 model year performed better than their segment average. Newly launched models averaged 241 problems per 100 vehicles, compared with 196 for carryover models. These are results for those study cohorts, not a forecast for a particular car or a failure rate for every new model. See J.D. Power’s 2025 study release.
That distinction matters if you are considering a first-year vehicle: there may be less evidence to judge than there is for a model with several years of production and owner experience. But “first year” is not enough to conclude that a car is unreliable. The useful question is how much relevant evidence exists for its particular design, components, and model year.

First identify what is actually new
A new nameplate, a full redesign, a new powertrain, and a carryover model with limited updates do not have the same evidence base. Before comparing reliability information, establish which kind of change you are evaluating.
- New nameplate: There may be no earlier model-year history for the vehicle itself. Look for evidence about shared powertrain or major components, while recognizing that a related vehicle is not a substitute for this model’s own record.
- Full redesign: Previous generations can provide background, but do not assume their results transfer to new systems or components.
- New powertrain: A familiar body or name does not make an unfamiliar engine, transmission, hybrid system, or other major component mature.
- Carryover with limited updates: Prior years may be more relevant if the core systems and configuration are substantially unchanged. Check what changed rather than relying on the model name alone.
J.D. Power’s launch-cohort comparison is a reason to distinguish a fresh launch from a carryover, not proof that every new design will have the same outcome. The 2025 study release provides the cohort figures.
For a practical comparison, make a short list of the model year, generation, powertrain, and major systems in each candidate. Then mark which are genuinely shared with an older vehicle and which are new. A shared engine or system can provide useful context, but it does not establish how the complete new vehicle will perform: installation, software, supporting components, and vehicle configuration may differ. If the match is imperfect, treat the older model as background evidence rather than a reliability proxy.

Check official safety records for the model
In the United States, use the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lookup to search by model year, make, and model. Review recalls, investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications rather than treating a single complaint total as a reliability score. NHTSA’s recall lookup provides vehicle and model searches, while its investigations and recalls resources explain how to find records and agency materials.
- Search the exact model year, make, and model. A result for another year or generation may not describe the vehicle you are considering.
- Read the record, not just the count. Note the system involved, the concern described, and whether reports point to a recurring pattern.
- Separate different kinds of activity. An investigation is not the same as a confirmed recall; a recall is not the same as a completed repair campaign. Check the status and documents available for each record.
- Look for manufacturer communications. They can add context about issues and responses. NHTSA says investigation records may include agency documents and manufacturer correspondence as they become available.
NHTSA describes its review as a risk-based process. Information considered in defect data can include complaints, crashes, injuries, warranty claims, modifications, and parts sales. As a result, a raw complaint count is a signal to investigate, not an exposure-adjusted failure rate: it does not, on its own, tell you how many vehicles were in service or how often a particular failure occurs. See NHTSA’s datasets and APIs information for context on its data.

These records are U.S.-specific. They are not a complete record for every country, and a lack of listed activity is not proof that a model has no problems. NHTSA says a recall is issued when a manufacturer or the agency determines that a vehicle or other covered product creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards; a complaint or investigation alone does not establish that outcome. NHTSA’s recall guidance explains its lookup and recall process.
Use the categories as a sequence of questions rather than as interchangeable warning labels. A complaint is a report to examine; an investigation means the agency is reviewing a concern; a recall reflects a determination that a safety risk or standards issue warrants action. Look at what the record actually says and whether the manufacturer has communicated a remedy. None of those items alone supplies a full long-term dependability score.
Check the specific vehicle by VIN
For a car you may buy, run its vehicle identification number (VIN) through NHTSA’s lookup. A model-level search helps you understand records associated with a model and year; a VIN search checks for unrepaired recalls associated with that particular vehicle. Use NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup.
If the lookup identifies an unrepaired recall, confirm the repair status with the seller or an authorized service provider before purchase. If it shows no unrepaired recalls, interpret that result narrowly: it does not establish that the car has no defects, rule out future recalls, or demonstrate long-term reliability.
Model and VIN searches answer different questions, so use both when you have a specific vehicle in mind. The model search helps surface broader records tied to a year and model; the VIN result is about unrepaired recalls reflected for that individual vehicle. A clean VIN lookup is not a clean bill of health for every system, and it cannot predict what issues may emerge as more vehicles accumulate miles and time in service.

Compare evidence by age, system, and vehicle—not by headline number
Different kinds of evidence answer different questions. Initial-quality results, early complaints, safety records, and multi-year dependability studies should not be combined as if they measured the same thing. Ask how old the vehicles were, what systems were included, and whether the evidence applies to the model and configuration you are shopping for.
| Evidence | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| NHTSA recalls and investigations | Whether safety-related concerns prompted official action or review, and what records or communications are available. | A complete measure of all reliability problems or a prediction of future failures. |
| NHTSA complaints | Issues that owners or others have reported and patterns worth examining. | An exposure-adjusted failure rate or proof that every vehicle has the reported problem. |
| Early-quality results | Reported problems during the period and scope measured by that particular study. | Several years of durability or the outcome for a model not represented in the results. |
| Three-year dependability results | Problems reported by owners after a longer ownership period, within the study’s population and categories. | A model-specific result if the model is absent or too new to have the required ownership history. |
| Warranty terms | Which covered repairs may be paid for and subject to what limits or exclusions. | How often the vehicle will need repairs or whether it is dependable. |
When comparing alternatives, match model year, generation, powertrain, and major systems as closely as the available evidence allows. If no close match exists, say so in your own assessment rather than treating a brand’s reputation or a loosely related model as proof. Also separate a safety signal from a convenience issue: an infotainment problem, for example, is not the same kind of concern as a defect that creates a safety risk.
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. VDS reported 204 problems per 100 vehicles overall, with infotainment the most problematic category at 56.7 problems per 100 vehicles. These are study-wide figures, not expected results for an individual car or an unrepresented new model. The study measures original owners of three-year-old vehicles across nine system categories; see the 2026 study release and the VDS study description.
Those “problems per 100 vehicles” figures describe the study’s reported problems, not the percentage of vehicles that failed or the expected repair bill for a buyer. In particular, do not apply a study-wide average to a new model that was not represented or has not yet reached the study’s ownership age. The useful comparison is between results that cover similarly aged vehicles and relevant systems, with any differences in model coverage made explicit.
Read the warranty as a financial backstop
Find the written warranty terms for the exact vehicle and the market where you will buy it. Check coverage duration and mileage limits, exclusions, and whether important components have separate coverage terms. Do not assume that a warranty in one country applies in another or that every expensive repair is covered.

A warranty can limit some repair costs if a covered problem occurs, but it is not a reliability score: broad coverage does not prove a vehicle will need fewer repairs. Because coverage varies by make, model, market, and component, use the relevant manufacturer documentation rather than relying on a generic duration or an advertisement.
Before you decide, make sure you can answer four practical questions from the actual documents: what is covered, for how long, up to what mileage, and which exclusions or separate component terms apply? If the documentation is unclear, ask the seller or manufacturer to identify the applicable written terms for that vehicle and location. For an unspecified model and country, no standard warranty duration is established, so avoid treating a generic number as universal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose based on how much uncertainty you can accept
There is no universal rule against buying a first-year model. The decision depends on the strength of the available evidence and your tolerance for uncertainty.
- Consider a mature alternative or waiting if predictable costs are important, you plan to keep the car for many years, or the model introduces major systems with little relevant history.
- Consider the new model if its features matter to you and you are comfortable weighing limited long-term evidence against the official records, component history, and written warranty you can verify.
- Pause for more information if the seller cannot provide the VIN, the vehicle’s recall status is unclear, or the warranty terms for your market are not available.
J.D. Power’s 2026 release quotes Jason Norton, the organization’s director of auto benchmarking: “As owners hold onto their vehicles longer, the long-term ownership experience matters more than ever.” That is a useful reason to examine the ownership horizon that matters to you—not a substitute for model-specific evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it risky to buy the first year of a new car model?
It involves more uncertainty because the model may not yet have years of owner data, but a first-year launch is not proof that the car is unreliable. Check the model’s safety records, what components are genuinely new, relevant evidence from mature alternatives, and the written warranty before deciding.
Does a clean NHTSA VIN lookup mean the car is reliable?
No. A VIN lookup can show unrepaired recalls associated with that vehicle. A clean result does not rule out other defects, future recalls, or long-term problems.
How should I interpret complaints about a new model?
Read the underlying reports for the issue and system involved, and look for patterns. NHTSA considers multiple kinds of defect information in a risk-based process, so a raw complaint count is not an exposure-adjusted failure rate and does not show how often a problem occurs across all vehicles.
Can a long warranty make up for a lack of reliability data?
A warranty may limit costs for repairs that are covered, subject to its duration, mileage limits, exclusions, and component-specific terms. It is a financial backstop, not evidence that the vehicle is dependable. Check the written terms for the exact vehicle and market.
The Bottom Line
When a new model has no long-term record, treat reliability as unknown. Check NHTSA’s model-year records and the vehicle’s VIN, compare the same generation and major systems where possible, and read the exact warranty. Study averages and clean recall lookups can inform a decision, but neither predicts a particular car’s long-term reliability.
