What to Check Before Buying a Used LDV D90 in Australia

A practical Australia-specific checklist for verifying a used LDV D90’s build date, recall status, servicing, PPSR result, sale channel and condition before purchase.

Before buying a used LDV D90 in Australia, verify its build date and VIN, confirm any recall work with an authorised dealer, match its service records to the correct maintenance schedule, run a PPSR search close to purchase, and arrange an independent inspection and test drive. These checks matter more than a general claim that D90s are reliable or unreliable: the evidence and condition of the individual vehicle should determine your decision.

Start with the vehicle’s identity and build date

Ask for the VIN and the vehicle’s build and compliance details before relying on a safety rating, recall result, service history or seller description. Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the registration papers, sale documents and any inspection or PPSR paperwork. If the identifiers do not agree, pause the purchase and resolve the discrepancy with the seller and relevant authority.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Keep the VIN available for each check, and make sure any result or report relates to the same vehicle you are considering. A report for another D90, an incorrect VIN or an old search may not answer the question you need answered. Record the vehicle’s odometer reading at the same time so it can be compared with the service documents and the inspector’s report.

The build date matters particularly for safety-rating claims. ANCAP’s five-star rating was based on a 2017 assessment and applies to D90 variants built from November 2017 through December 2024. ANCAP lists that rating as expired in December 2024. D90s built from 1 January 2025 onward are unrated; the earlier rating should not be applied to them.

D90 build period ANCAP status What the status means when comparing cars
November 2017 to December 2024 Five stars from the 2017 assessment; rating expired December 2024 The rating applies to vehicles in this stated build range, not to every D90 regardless of build date.
From 1 January 2025 Unrated Do not describe a later-build vehicle as five-star rated on the basis of the older assessment.

The 2017 assessment recorded an overall score of 35.05 out of 37 and standard AEB functions for city, interurban and vulnerable-road-user scenarios. These are historical results for the assessed model range, not a current assessment of a D90 built from 2025 onward. Confirm the exact build date from the vehicle and its paperwork before comparing safety-rating status. If a listing simply says “five-star ANCAP”, ask the seller to provide the build details that support that claim.

Confirm recall status by VIN

Australian Government Vehicle Recalls record REC-006141, campaign LDV2427, was published on 28 October 2024. It covers affected 2017–2024 LDV D90 vehicles within the campaign scope and lists 4,785 affected units. That is the campaign’s listed affected-unit count, not a count of vehicles that remain unrepaired.

The reported manufacturing defect may cause the coolant-pipe T-piece connector to fail and leak coolant. The stated hazard is engine overheating and possible stalling, which can cause loss of motive power. Do not assume that a particular D90 is included in the campaign—or that recall work has been completed—based only on its year, model badge or a seller’s recollection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Give the VIN to an authorised LDV dealer and ask whether campaign LDV2427 applies to that specific vehicle.
  2. If it applies, ask the dealer to confirm whether the remedy has been completed. If it has not, ask how to arrange the recall work before purchase.
  3. Request written confirmation of completed work and keep it with the vehicle’s records.

The recall instruction is for owners of affected vehicles to contact their preferred authorised LDV dealer to have the work carried out free of charge. The VIN-specific dealer confirmation is what establishes the status of the vehicle you are considering. If the seller says a repair was done but cannot provide documentation, ask the dealer to check its records rather than treating the statement as proof.

Because the stated hazard involves coolant leakage, overheating and possible loss of motive power, do not ignore a warning light, overheating symptom or sign of a coolant leak during a viewing or test drive. Such a symptom does not by itself establish that the recall defect is present; have the vehicle assessed and ask the dealer to check the VIN. A completed campaign also does not replace a general mechanical inspection.

Check service records against the correct schedule

Request the Owner’s Manual, service and warranty booklet, and detailed invoices from every workshop that has serviced the D90. A stamped booklet can help, but invoices provide useful detail about dates, odometer readings and work performed. Compare the records with the schedule for the vehicle’s exact year, engine and variant rather than assuming all D90s share an identical schedule.

  • Look for a consistent sequence of dates and odometer readings across the booklet and invoices.
  • Check that service intervals appear to follow the schedule in the Owner’s Manual.
  • Ask the seller about missing periods, unexplained changes in recorded kilometres or major work without supporting paperwork.
  • Ask an authorised LDV dealer to confirm the latest schedule and whether any service or campaign work remains outstanding.

Use the documents together rather than treating one stamp as a complete maintenance record. For example, a service entry should fit the sequence of earlier and later odometer readings; an invoice can clarify what was done when the booklet only records a date. If records stop for a period, ask for an explanation and consider whether the independent inspector can assess any concern. Do not assume a gap proves neglect, but do not fill it with an unsupported assurance either.

LDV Australia states that servicing outside an LDV dealer does not void warranty when the vehicle is maintained to the manufacturer’s schedule in the Owner’s Manual. It recommends keeping detailed invoices and checking the current schedule with an authorised dealer. A non-dealer service history is therefore not, by itself, proof that warranty has been voided; assess whether the records show schedule-compliant maintenance.

Ask the dealer to verify any warranty that may remain on the specific vehicle. Its in-service date, kilometres, warranty terms and exclusions matter. A current new-vehicle warranty headline does not establish the coverage remaining on a used D90. Ask for the answer in relation to this VIN and check what documentation supports it. If coverage cannot be confirmed, do not include assumed warranty protection in your comparison or budget.

Routine owner checks between scheduled services are also relevant to the vehicle’s visible condition. LDV’s general maintenance guidance highlights checks such as tyres and lights. These simple checks do not replace scheduled servicing, but they can help you notice obvious issues at the viewing and provide useful items for the inspector to assess.

Run a PPSR search close to the sale

Use the Australian Government Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) to search the vehicle by VIN or chassis number on the day before or the day of purchase. A PPSR search can show a registered security interest and may include written-off or stolen indicators drawn from NEVDIS. A registered security interest can put the buyer at risk of repossession, so do not proceed until any listed interest is properly resolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Obtain the VIN or chassis number and check that it matches the vehicle, registration papers and seller’s documents.
  2. Run the PPSR vehicle search close to payment, rather than relying on an old certificate supplied by the seller.
  3. Read the certificate for a security interest and any written-off or stolen information, and follow up anything unclear or inconsistent.
  4. Keep the certificate with your purchase documents.

A recent search is useful because it ties the check more closely to the purchase. If you are looking at more than one D90, search each vehicle using its own VIN; a result for one car cannot be transferred to another. If a result raises a question, pause and establish what it means before paying or taking possession rather than relying on a verbal explanation alone.

A PPSR search has limits. It does not provide the odometer reading, full ownership history, outstanding fines or the amount of finance owing. Its NEVDIS data may also be unavailable or out of date, so the absence of a stolen or written-off indicator is not conclusive proof that the vehicle has never had that status. Follow up discrepancies with the relevant authority and seller rather than treating a clean search as a complete history check.

That is why PPSR, service records and inspection findings should be read as separate pieces of evidence. PPSR can help identify a registered interest and some status indicators; service documents can show recorded maintenance and odometer readings; and an inspector can assess physical condition and number integrity. None of those checks alone answers every ownership, history or mechanical question.

Arrange an independent inspection and test drive

Have an independent mechanic inspect the D90 before committing, ideally with the report tied to the VIN and odometer. The PPSR advises buyers to consider asking a roadside assistance provider or motor traders association for an inspector. An independent assessment helps identify issues that a short viewing, seller explanation or paperwork check cannot establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When booking, explain that you are considering a used LDV D90 and provide the VIN and current odometer reading. Ask whether the report will record those identifiers and whether the inspector can compare the service-manual odometer entries with the vehicle. An inspection is most useful when it relates clearly to the exact car and the documents you have been given. It cannot guarantee that no future fault will occur, but it can help you make a decision based on the vehicle’s current condition rather than a brief impression.

At the viewing

  • Compare the odometer reading with dated service records and check for unexplained inconsistencies.
  • Look for visible damage, signs of repair and anything that does not match the seller’s account or documents.
  • Check that tyres and lights appear to be in good condition. A tread-depth gauge can help check tyre tread, but it does not establish a tyre’s full condition or replace an inspector’s assessment.
  • Ask the inspector to check serial-number integrity, general condition and the consistency of odometer records in the service manual.

Check that the inspection and paperwork are about the same vehicle: compare the VIN rather than relying on a matching model name or registration description. Notice any discrepancy between the odometer and dated entries, but ask the inspector to assess it rather than drawing a conclusion from one number alone. Likewise, visible signs of repair warrant questions and professional assessment; they do not, on their own, establish the vehicle’s history.

A tread-depth gauge is an optional, low-cost task tool if you want to check tread at the viewing. It is not a D90-specific accessory, and a tread reading alone does not establish the tyre’s full condition. Have the inspector assess the tyres as part of the overall vehicle inspection. Check lights for operation and visible damage, and note any issue so it can be assessed rather than assuming it is minor.

On the test drive

Drive the vehicle when possible and pay attention to warning lights, braking, steering, transmission behaviour, cooling and the operation of installed features. Note anything unusual and ask the inspector to assess it; do not dismiss a warning or symptom based only on an owner anecdote. LDV’s general maintenance guidance also emphasizes scheduled servicing and routine owner checks between services, including checks of tyres and lights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A test drive is one part of the assessment, not a substitute for an inspection. If a warning appears, a system does not operate as expected or a behaviour concerns you, record the issue and have it investigated. Do not attempt to diagnose a fault from a short drive or assume that a seller’s explanation settles the matter. If you cannot drive the vehicle, or cannot arrange a reasonable inspection, treat the missing evidence as a risk in the decision.

If the seller will not allow a reasonable inspection or test drive, or the VIN cannot be checked, treat that as an unresolved risk rather than filling the gap with assumptions. The inspection should inform the decision about this particular vehicle; it does not guarantee that no future fault will occur.

Understand the sale channel before relying on protections

Dealer, private and auction purchases can carry different protections. The ACCC explains that most consumer guarantees and state or territory laws do not apply to second-hand cars bought at private sale or auction. Legal protections and dealer obligations depend on the jurisdiction and the details of the transaction, so check the rules for the relevant Australian state or territory and confirm who the actual seller is.

Sale channel What to establish Practical implication
Dealer Who is selling the vehicle, what warranty applies, and what obligations apply in the relevant jurisdiction Do not assume that a dealer’s description or a general warranty statement confirms the vehicle’s history or remaining coverage; verify both.
Private sale Seller identity, vehicle ownership and PPSR result Most consumer guarantees and state or territory laws do not apply to second-hand cars bought privately, according to the ACCC.
Auction Sale terms, seller identity, vehicle ownership and PPSR result Most consumer guarantees and state or territory laws do not apply to second-hand cars bought at auction, according to the ACCC.

Do not infer the legal position from where you first saw the advertisement. Establish who the actual seller is and what transaction terms apply. For private and auction purchases in particular, the ACCC advice makes ownership checks important; use PPSR, but remember its limits and follow up unresolved indicators. In every channel, check the vehicle itself and its documents rather than treating the sale channel as proof of condition.

Compare D90 candidates using the same evidence

When considering more than one D90, record the same checks for each vehicle instead of comparing one seller’s claims with another vehicle’s paperwork. A useful comparison should include:

  • Build date and applicable ANCAP status.
  • VIN-specific recall applicability and written proof of any completed remedy.
  • Service-record completeness, date and odometer consistency, and evidence of schedule compliance.
  • PPSR result, VIN consistency and any written-off or stolen indicators that need follow-up.
  • Independent inspection findings, test-drive observations, visible condition, tyres and lights.
  • Sale channel, verified warranty status, included items, asking price and the cost of any confirmed work.

For a fair comparison, use the same evidence standard for each candidate: request the same core records, verify the VIN, ask the same recall question and arrange an inspection for each car you are seriously considering. A candidate with a longer list of documented checks is easier to assess than one whose apparent advantages depend on claims you cannot verify.

Separate known facts from open questions. For example, record whether the recall applies and whether the remedy is documented; note separately if the dealer has not yet confirmed status. Write down inspection findings and any work the inspector says should be assessed or completed. This helps you compare a confirmed condition or cost with another vehicle’s unknown status, rather than treating unknown as equivalent to clear.

Do not treat a higher asking price, a clean PPSR result or a complete-looking service booklet as a substitute for the other checks. A documented issue may be manageable if properly resolved and priced into the decision; an unexplained identity, history or mechanical concern should remain unresolved until verified. The cost of any confirmed work belongs in the comparison, but do not guess at a repair figure: obtain a specific estimate from an appropriate provider.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—say about reliability

The official information cited here establishes the ANCAP rating’s build-date scope and one material D90 recall campaign. It does not establish a model-specific reliability rate, failure rate or owner-survey statistic, and the campaign’s 4,785 affected units should not be used to estimate how often D90s fail or how many remain unrepaired. Assess the vehicle’s records, recall status and inspection findings rather than extending one campaign into a broader claim about every D90.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every used LDV D90 covered by the 2017 ANCAP five-star rating?

No. The five-star rating from the 2017 assessment applies to D90 variants built from November 2017 through December 2024, and ANCAP lists it as expired in December 2024. D90s built from 1 January 2025 onward are unrated. Check the individual vehicle’s build date before relying on the rating.

How do I check whether a used D90 has had recall campaign LDV2427 completed?

Give the vehicle’s VIN to an authorised LDV dealer and ask whether campaign LDV2427 applies and whether the remedy is recorded as complete. If work remains outstanding, ask how to arrange it. The recall remedy is free for affected vehicles; request written confirmation of completed work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a service at an independent workshop void an LDV D90’s warranty?

LDV Australia says servicing outside an LDV dealer does not void warranty if the vehicle is maintained to the manufacturer’s schedule in the Owner’s Manual. Check invoices and the service booklet for evidence of schedule-compliant maintenance, and ask an authorised dealer to verify any warranty remaining on the specific vehicle.

What does a PPSR search tell me about a used D90, and what does it not tell me?

A PPSR vehicle search can show a registered security interest and may include written-off or stolen indicators drawn from NEVDIS. It does not provide the odometer reading, full ownership history, outstanding fines or the amount of finance owing. NEVDIS information may be unavailable or out of date, so follow up discrepancies and do not treat an absent indicator as conclusive proof of a clean history.

Should I get an independent inspection even if the D90 has a clean PPSR result?

Yes. A PPSR search and a mechanical inspection answer different questions. Arrange an independent inspection tied to the VIN and odometer, and have the inspector assess serial-number integrity, service-record odometer consistency and general condition. Also test-drive the vehicle when possible and report any warning lights or unusual behaviour.

Are private-sale and auction protections the same as buying from a dealer?

Not necessarily. The ACCC explains that most consumer guarantees and state or territory laws do not apply to second-hand cars bought at private sale or auction. Protections and dealer obligations depend on the jurisdiction and transaction, so confirm who the actual seller is and check the applicable rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Before paying for a used LDV D90, match the VIN across the vehicle and paperwork, confirm build-date safety-rating status, have an authorised dealer check recall campaign LDV2427, review service records against the correct schedule, run a current PPSR search, and obtain an independent inspection and test drive. Treat missing or conflicting evidence as an open question to resolve—not as proof that the vehicle is clear.
