1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore you pay, verify the individual car’s battery condition, charging compatibility, history, New Zealand compliance and warranty support. A model name or badge cannot confirm how a particular imported vehicle was built, maintained or supported. Make the sale conditional on getting the evidence you need and having the car independently inspected.
Start with the exact car, not assumptions about its badge
“Chinese electric car” describes a broad group of vehicles, not one common specification or ownership experience. A car’s market version, import history, prior use and repair record can matter more to your purchase than its country of manufacture. Even two cars described as the same make and model may differ in charging capability or equipment if one was built for another market.

Ask the seller for the vehicle identification number (VIN), the exact market specification, the registration details and the documents that support the car’s history. Use the VIN to check that the vehicle and paperwork match, and have any uncertainties resolved before committing to the purchase. If the seller cannot establish the car’s identity, import status or charging specification, treat that as an unresolved purchase risk—not as a detail to sort out after payment.
Keep a simple record for each candidate car: VIN, market version, odometer reading, seller, asking price and the documents received. This helps avoid comparing a well-documented NZ-new vehicle with an import whose specification or history remains unclear. Ask the seller to put important claims—including battery condition, charging capability, repairs and warranty coverage—in writing.

1. Get a battery-health assessment
The traction battery is central to an EV’s usable range and value. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) advises used-EV buyers to have the battery properly checked before purchase. Ask for a written assessment of state of health (SoH) and remaining capacity, and ask who performed the test, how it was performed and what the result means for this particular vehicle.
What to request
- A battery-health and capacity report from someone qualified to inspect that model.
- The test method and the conditions under which the result was produced.
- Any battery fault codes, warnings or relevant repair history identified during the inspection.
- The manufacturer’s written battery-warranty terms for this exact vehicle and VIN.
A dashboard range estimate is not a substitute for a measured battery-health result. Estimated range can change with driving patterns and conditions; SoH is a measure of remaining battery capacity. Do not infer a battery’s condition from a single range display or an informal claim that it “still gets good range.” Ask the inspector to interpret the report in light of the car’s intended use.
Think through that intended use before deciding whether the battery result is acceptable. Consider the journeys you expect to make, the charging access you have and whether the car’s measured condition fits those needs. The inspection report should help you understand the vehicle in front of you; it cannot be reduced to a universal percentage that guarantees a good purchase.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no universal battery-health percentage that official guidance establishes as a pass mark for every used EV. The significance of a result depends on the vehicle, the test method, the remaining warranty and how you plan to use the car. Have a qualified inspector explain the implications for this car rather than relying on a generic cutoff.
Check battery warranty terms, not just the headline duration
EECA says new-EV battery warranties typically run for around 8–10 years or 160,000 km. That is a general description of typical new-EV coverage, not a guarantee for every manufacturer, a statement of the remaining cover on a used car or proof that an imported vehicle qualifies. Ask for the actual written terms and confirm the start date, distance limit, battery coverage, exclusions, transferability and whether the terms apply to this VIN and market version.
Also establish who would honour the warranty in New Zealand. Ask the seller to identify the responsible manufacturer or local service entity and to confirm how a claim would be handled. If the answer is unclear, seek written confirmation from the relevant manufacturer or New Zealand distributor before purchase; do not assume that an overseas-market warranty transfers or can be claimed locally.
Ask whether the seller has paperwork showing when the warranty began and whether there have been prior battery claims or repairs. A broad warranty estimate cannot tell you how much cover remains on this particular car: both time and distance limits matter, and the written terms determine what is covered. Keep the response with the vehicle documents.

2. Verify charging compatibility on the car you will buy
Before buying, identify the charging inlet fitted to the vehicle and obtain its AC and DC charging specifications. Consumer Protection warns that some used imports can have different charging capabilities from NZ-new vehicles of the same make and model. A listing that gives only the model name does not establish what charging equipment or capabilities this particular car has.
Ask the seller to demonstrate or document
- The inlet type and the vehicle’s AC and DC charging capability and speed.
- Which cables are included, their type and condition, and what charging setups they suit.
- Whether the car can connect to the home charging equipment you intend to use.
- Whether it can use the public charging network on the routes you expect to drive.
- Whether charging has been tested, and whether any warning messages or faults appeared.
Where possible, have charging operation checked during the independent inspection. Confirm the connector and specifications against the actual vehicle documentation rather than relying on a seller’s general description of the model. Think about your own routine: a car may be suitable for one buyer’s home charging arrangement and inconvenient for another’s regular public-charging routes.
For a useful check, start with the vehicle’s supplied documents and the physical inlet, then compare those details with the charging equipment you plan to use. Ask the seller to identify each cable and show what is included in the sale. If the car cannot be tested at the inspection, record that limitation and get the capability confirmed from reliable vehicle-specific documentation before purchase.
Do not buy a cable on the assumption that one type fits every EV. A New Zealand-compatible cable may be an additional purchase, but first confirm the car’s inlet, charging requirements and the cable’s safety and compatibility. Include any required cable or charging equipment in your ownership-cost comparison.

3. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection
A current Warrant of Fitness (WoF) is not a complete condition report. NZTA describes a WoF as a regular safety check, not a pre-purchase inspection; Consumer Protection likewise cautions buyers not to treat a current WoF as proof of overall reliability. Arrange an independent inspection before payment, ideally by someone with experience inspecting EVs and the model in question.
Ask the inspector to cover both EV and general condition
- Battery health and capacity, and any relevant warning messages or diagnostic findings.
- Charging operation, the inlet, supplied cable and any charging-related faults.
- Tyres, brakes, suspension and other general vehicle-condition and safety items.
- Evidence of collision damage, repairs, water ingress or previous water damage.
- Available service and repair records, and any gaps that affect the assessment.
Tell the inspector that the car is a used import if applicable, and provide the VIN and available records. Ask for the result in writing. If an inspection identifies work, get enough detail to understand what needs attention and whether the seller will address it before the sale. Do not let the presence of a WoF replace the battery, charging and condition checks.
Book the inspection before making an unconditional commitment, and make access to the car and relevant records part of the arrangement with the seller. Read the report carefully rather than treating it as a simple pass/fail label: note what was checked, what could not be checked and what needs follow-up. If the seller will not allow an independent inspection, consider that a significant unresolved risk.

4. Verify the car’s identity, history and legal status
Compare the VIN on the vehicle with the VIN on its documents and sale paperwork. Check that the seller’s identity and authority to sell are consistent with the documents. Ask directly about accidents, repairs, water damage, prior use and missing service history; then compare the answers with the records and inspection findings.
Run the key checks
- Service and repair records: Request the available maintenance history, invoices and records of significant repairs. Note missing periods or undocumented work.
- Stolen status and recalls: Use the official stolen-vehicle check and check for outstanding safety recalls. Review the model’s safety rating as part of your decision.
- Money owing: Search the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) for a registered security interest before paying.
- Trader paperwork: If buying from a motor vehicle trader, read the Consumer Information Notice (CIN). It includes information about the seller and vehicle, previous owners and money owing, damaged-import information and the on-road price.
- Registration and licensing: Confirm the vehicle is registered and licensed for use on New Zealand roads, and inspect the import and compliance documents if it was imported.
Keep copies of the inspection report, VIN-related documents, CIN where applicable, sale agreement, warranty terms and receipts. They give you a record of what was represented and agreed at the time of sale.
Do not rely on the seller’s answers alone for checks that can be independently verified. Compare the VIN and documents, look up stolen status and recalls, and search the PPSR before handing over money. Ask the seller to explain inconsistencies, missing invoices or gaps in the ownership and repair history; if they cannot be resolved, factor that uncertainty into whether to proceed.
5. Establish import and compliance status
If the vehicle is already in New Zealand, ask whether it was imported and confirm that entry certification and registration have been completed. NZTA’s used-vehicle import pathway includes compliance with applicable standards, border inspection, entry certification, and registration and licensing for road use. Ask to see the relevant import and repair documentation rather than assuming that an overseas registration or a New Zealand listing proves road-use compliance.
If you are considering importing a vehicle yourself, contact an entry certifier before buying. NZTA recommends checking the vehicle’s suitability and requirements and checking recalls before purchase. Establish what standards apply and understand the border-inspection, certification, Customs and biosecurity responsibilities, along with any applicable Clean Car Standard requirements.
Recommended Free Tools
Pay particular attention to steering configuration. NZTA says most left-hand-drive vehicles must be converted to right-hand drive before they can be used on New Zealand roads, with limited exceptions. If the model you are considering may have been offered only in left-hand drive in its source market, confirm the rules and feasibility for that exact vehicle before committing funds.
For an overseas purchase, resolve these questions before paying or arranging transport: whether the vehicle can meet the relevant standards, what an entry certifier says is required, whether recall work is outstanding, and what Customs, biosecurity and Clean Car Standard obligations may apply. Certification, compliance and road-use eligibility are not established merely by buying a car that looks identical to a New Zealand example.

6. Check seller type and understand your protections
A dealer transaction generally carries more consumer protections than a private purchase. A motor vehicle trader must provide an accurate, reliable CIN for a used vehicle sold by the trader. Private sales generally have fewer protections under the Consumer Guarantees Act and Fair Trading Act.
Confirm who the legal seller is and read the sale documents carefully. If the vehicle is described as being sold “as is, where is,” understand what the agreement says about faults and repairs before signing. Ask how any identified defects will be handled and record any promises in writing. Do not treat a verbal assurance about battery condition, charging, warranty or repairs as a substitute for evidence or written terms.

Check that the name on the paperwork matches the person or business selling the car, and obtain the CIN when the seller is a motor vehicle trader. Keep the CIN and sale contract alongside any written warranty terms, inspection findings and receipts. For a private sale, be especially careful to complete your own checks and retain evidence of what the seller said and what you agreed.
7. Check the WoF and complete the transfer correctly
NZTA says a buyer can insist that a light vehicle has a WoF less than one month old. Without a current WoF, the vehicle generally cannot be driven except to a place for repair or inspection. Confirm the WoF status and agree on how the car will be moved if it cannot legally be driven for ordinary use.
Both buyer and seller need to notify NZTA of a change of registered person. Make sure the transfer is dealt with as part of the handover rather than assuming the seller’s notification alone completes everything. Registration and a WoF do not resolve the battery, charging, full mechanical-condition or warranty questions; those require the separate evidence described above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check the battery health on a used Chinese EV?
Arrange a battery-health and capacity assessment from someone qualified to inspect that model. Ask for a written SoH result, the test method and any relevant fault or repair findings. A dashboard range estimate is not the same as measured battery health. There is no universal pass percentage; have the result interpreted for that vehicle and your intended use.
Will an imported EV charge on New Zealand chargers?
Do not assume so from the model name. Confirm the exact car’s inlet, AC and DC capability and speed, included cable type and compatibility with your home setup and the public charging routes you use. Imported versions can differ from NZ-new cars of the same make and model. Have charging operation checked where possible.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is the battery warranty still valid if the car was imported?
It depends on the written warranty terms for the exact VIN and market version. Ask for the start date, time and distance limits, coverage, exclusions and transfer rules, and identify who would handle a claim in New Zealand. A typical new-EV warranty duration does not confirm the remaining cover or local claim eligibility for a used import.
Is a WoF enough when buying a used EV?
No. A WoF is a regular safety check, not a pre-purchase inspection, and it does not establish battery health, charging compatibility, full mechanical condition or warranty support. Arrange an independent inspection that covers both general condition and EV-specific items. A buyer can insist that a light vehicle WoF is less than one month old.
What should I check before buying a used Chinese electric car in New Zealand?
Check the individual vehicle’s battery report, charging specification, condition and repair history, VIN and legal status, recalls, PPSR result, import and compliance documents, seller paperwork and warranty support. Also confirm registration, licensing and WoF status, and include inspection, repairs and any charging equipment in your cost comparison.
The Bottom Line
Before paying, get vehicle-specific evidence: an independent inspection with battery and charging checks, verified history and legal status, confirmed New Zealand compliance, and written warranty and local-support terms. A WoF, badge or model description cannot substitute for those checks. Compare the total cost of making each car suitable for your needs, and proceed only when the important questions are answered.
