Buy the E38 with the strongest evidence of maintenance and the smallest verified repair backlog—not simply the lowest asking price or the most appealing badge. Before committing, confirm the car’s history and engine, inspect its cooling system, road-test the gearbox and chassis, check for corrosion and water intrusion, test every electrical feature, and verify open recalls by VIN. A specialist inspection is especially valuable when records are incomplete or symptoms appear.
Start with the car’s history, not its badge
An E38 can look impressive and still need substantial deferred work. Its asking price does not establish whether its cooling system, engine, transmission, suspension or electronics have been maintained. Compare the condition and evidence for each individual car before deciding what its model or equipment is worth to you.

Ask the seller for the 17-digit VIN, the exact model and engine details, the service book, and itemized repair invoices. Request dates and mileages for cooling-system work, engine repairs, suspension and brake work, and transmission servicing. Match the VIN and mileage entries across the paperwork and the car. A broad assurance that a car is “maintained” is not a substitute for records showing what was done and when.
- Look for gaps, contradictory mileage entries and repairs described without supporting invoices.
- Ask whether coolant has needed repeated top-ups and whether the car has ever overheated.
- Check whether the documented work corresponds to the car’s actual engine and equipment.
- Use the VIN to check recall status before travelling to see the car.
There is no universal mileage cutoff that separates a good E38 from a bad one, and the available buying guidance does not establish a reliable failure-rate percentage. Treat the records and the car’s observed condition as the evidence; do not let a mileage figure or seller’s general description stand in for an inspection.

Before you travel: establish which E38 you are inspecting
Confirm the engine and market history
The E38 range changed over its production years, so verify the installed engine using the VIN, build information and records rather than relying on the boot badge alone. Early M60-powered 730i and 740i cars need particular care: the specialist E38 guide identifies a Nikasil cylinder-coating concern in relevant cars from 1994–1996, associated with high-sulphur fuel markets. That does not mean every M60 car has damage. The market and fuel history matter, especially if a car was imported from the US or UK.
For an early example with relevant import or fuel-market history, ask whether a compression test has been performed and request the results. If there is no convincing evidence and the history makes the concern applicable, arrange a test before purchase. A concerning result deserves specialist interpretation; do not treat the engine designation by itself as proof either of a problem or of a clean bill of health.
Ask for evidence before arranging a viewing
Ask for photographs or copies of the service records and invoices, and clarify any unclear entries with the seller. If the seller reports a repair, ask what was replaced and whether there is an invoice. An unexplained gap is not proof that work was neglected, but it leaves you with less evidence and should affect how much confidence you place in the car and how thoroughly it needs to be inspected.

BMW Group says a BMW partner carries out applicable recall work free of charge. The result is specific to the VIN and market: do not assume a particular campaign applies to every E38. Ask the seller for records of completed work and have a BMW partner confirm whether action remains due.
Inspect the cooling system before treating the car as road-ready
Cooling-system condition and any evidence of overheating deserve priority. E38-specific buying guidance flags the hoses, expansion tank, thermostat and water pump for age and deterioration. A seller’s statement that the temperature gauge looks normal is not a substitute for inspecting the system or establishing its service history.

With the engine completely cold
- Check the coolant level and visible condition. If the level is low, ask why; do not simply top it up and assume the issue is resolved.
- Inspect the expansion tank and the area around its cap for cracks, dampness or dried coolant residue.
- Look over the hoses, radiator area, thermostat area and water-pump area for deterioration, dampness and signs of past leakage.
- Look for white or rust-colored deposits around suspected leaks. BMW maintenance guidance identifies deposits of this kind as clues worth investigating.
- Compare the visible condition with invoices. Ask when components were replaced and whether the car has ever overheated.
Never open the expansion-tank or radiator cap when the engine is hot. BMW’s maintenance instructions say to wait until the engine is completely cool. If a leak is suspected, a specialist can pressure-test the system and diagnose it rather than relying on a visual guess. Check hoses, their fastenings and the cap as part of the inspection.
During the start and warm-up
Watch for warning lights, unstable running, unusual noises, smoke and abnormal temperature behavior from a cold start through warm-up. A brief drive with an apparently normal temperature gauge does not prove that an old system is sound. Nor can a buyer infer how much life any particular component has left from appearance alone; the available guidance establishes inspection priorities, not a remaining-life estimate.
Unexplained coolant loss or overheating is a reason to pause, not a minor detail to wave away. Ask for a written diagnosis and estimate from a specialist before negotiating around it.
Assess engine condition and look for leaks
Once the engine identity is established, inspect for signs of neglect and ask how the owner has monitored and serviced it. Look around the oil-pan gasket, filter-housing cover gasket, cylinder-head cover gasket, filler-cap seal, and crankshaft and camshaft seals. These are locations identified in E38 maintenance guidance for leak checks; that list is not a claim that every E38 leaks from each one.
Oil checks should be made on level ground, following the car’s applicable procedure. Note any visible leak and ask whether it has been diagnosed or repaired. A damp area, a fresh clean patch among older residue, or an invoice that does not clearly identify the repair calls for clarification, not an assumption about cause or cost.

For a relevant early M60 car, pair the visual inspection with the engine’s market and fuel history and any compression-test evidence. If the history or symptoms raise concerns, obtain a specialist assessment before purchase. Do not assume that an engine is sound merely because it starts, or that it is defective merely because it is an early M60.

Test the transmission on a proper road drive
Ask for a drive long enough for an automatic transmission to become warm. E38-specific guidance recommends checking the automatic through all available gears when warm, rather than judging it only during a short cold maneuver.
- Notice whether engagement is prompt and consistent.
- Pay attention to harsh engagement, delayed shifts, slipping, warning messages or unusual whirring.
- Observe shift behavior under load as well as during lighter driving, where it is safe to do so.
- Ask about servicing and compare the answer with the records for this exact car.
A symptom is a reason to seek diagnosis, not a reliable basis for guessing the repair. Have a specialist assess abnormal behavior before you buy; do not assume a harsh shift or warning message is harmless. Transmission specifications and service assumptions should not be carried across variants without confirming the exact car.
Manual E38s are uncommon relative to automatics. If the car is a manual, check clutch operation and shift quality during the drive, and confirm the car’s exact configuration before applying any service assumption from another version.
Check steering, suspension, brakes and tires on the road and on a lift
Road-test observations can help identify wear, but they cannot replace an inspection underneath. On a safe drive, pay attention to steering play, vibration or shimmy at speed, tramlining, knocks over bumps, and brake judder or movement through the steering wheel. E38 buying guidance calls out front control arms, ball joints and strut mounts, as well as rear axle bearing play. High-speed shimmy and front-end brake or suspension wear are also specifically noted.

What to inspect underneath
Arrange a lift inspection, particularly if the drive produces a symptom or the service history is thin. Have the inspector assess joints, bushings, dampers and axle bearings, along with the brake discs and pads, tires, and evidence of impact or poor repairs. The E38 is a heavy luxury sedan, but that does not justify declaring every example worn: judge this car by measured condition and observable faults.
Ask the inspector to distinguish between what is currently defective and what is merely an area to monitor. If a road symptom is present, seek an explanation tied to the actual components inspected rather than negotiating from a generic list of “common problems.” Obtain current local estimates for the specific work before deciding what the car is worth to you.

Inspect the underside on a lift. Check the jacking points and sills, wheel arches, roof and sunroof panel, and places where paint or underseal has been disturbed. An E38 specialist guide describes body corrosion as generally less common than on some contemporaneous BMWs, but identifies stone-chip areas, rear arches, the sunroof panel, coastal exposure and damaged jacking-point protection as areas to examine. That relative observation is not a reason to skip the inspection.
Look for damp carpets, a musty smell, water in the trunk, and moisture around electronic modules. E38 buying guidance describes water entering the boot and damaging navigation or control units. Blocked air-conditioning or sunroof drains are also identified as possible routes to water-related damage to control units in the footwell and under the seats.
Do not treat drying the visible carpet as a complete repair. Look for evidence that the source was identified and corrected, and have a specialist check for affected modules if water has reached an electronic area. Extensive electrical trouble associated with water intrusion warrants a written diagnosis before you proceed.

Test every electrical feature and cabin control
Equipment differs by year, market and the options fitted to an individual car. Make a list of the features this example actually has, then operate them one by one rather than assuming that the advertised trim or badge guarantees they are present or working.
- Operate every window, mirror and seat adjustment.
- Open and close the sunroof and tailgate, if fitted.
- Check climate-control operation and the dashboard and instrument displays.
- Test the on-board monitor, parking aids, audio and navigation equipment if installed.
- Watch displays for dead pixels and listen or look for actuators that fail to complete their movement.
E38-specific guides flag dead display pixels and failing seat, sunroof and tailgate actuator motors; another guide also identifies window regulators and water-related module damage. These are inspection prompts, not a claim that every car has those faults. Record which functions work and which do not, and have unresolved electrical faults diagnosed rather than assuming they are isolated or inexpensive.
Some navigation equipment is now dated. Treat that as a question of present-day usefulness, distinct from whether the system or other equipment is mechanically or electrically defective.

Compare actual cars by repair backlog
When comparing more than one E38, use the same evidence categories for each car. A well-documented example with a higher asking price may be a better candidate than a cheaper car with an unknown cooling-system, gearbox or suspension history—but only the individual inspection can establish whether it is. Do not convert that general principle into an assumed repair saving or a universal ranking by engine or trim.

For each car, list confirmed defects separately from unanswered questions. Get written specialist findings and current local estimates for the specific work. When to pause or walk away
Pause the purchase if you find unexplained overheating or coolant loss, significant compression concerns on an applicable early M60, unresolved gearbox symptoms, structural corrosion, or extensive electrical faults associated with water intrusion. Ask for a written specialist diagnosis and repair estimate before negotiating. If the seller will not provide a reasonable opportunity to resolve a material uncertainty, be prepared to consider another car.
A specialist inspection should focus on the symptoms and gaps specific to the example—not just produce a generic checklist. That is especially important when the car has thin records, an applicable engine-history question, road-test symptoms, visible leakage, or signs of water entry.

Bentley Publishers lists a 1,256-page BMW 7 Series (E38) Service Manual: 1995–2001, ISBN 978-0-8376-1618-6, covering the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. Those stated model details do not cover every E38 engine variant, so confirm fit for the specific car before relying on or purchasing the manual. It is a repair reference, not a substitute for a pre-purchase inspection.
