On a used car, check the package on the vehicle’s own Software screen—not just the seller’s listing. And plan to supervise every drive: Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not autonomous driving.
Start with the most important check: the car still needs a driver
Tesla calls its current package Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD (Supervised). Despite the name, it does not make a Tesla autonomous. Tesla says the driver must remain attentive and ready to take over; the features are driver assistance, not a replacement for the person behind the wheel. That requirement applies even when the system is following a route or performing a maneuver.

This is more than a disclaimer to skim after buying. Decide whether you are comfortable supervising the system continuously and intervening when needed. Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) guidance cautions drivers not to become complacent. The Model S owner’s manual gives examples of situations where intervention may be required, including narrow roads with oncoming cars, construction zones and complex intersections. The manual is model-specific, so read the manual for the particular vehicle you are considering rather than assuming every model behaves identically.

Evaluate the system as an assistance feature you may need to correct—not as a driver you can hand the trip over to. If that distinction does not match what you want from the car, do not pay a premium for the package.

Check the exact car, not just its model name
Feature availability can depend on the vehicle’s market, manufacture date, model and trim, configuration, options, self-driving hardware and software. Tesla also says capabilities and controls differ by model and model year. A feature shown in a video or present on another Tesla does not prove it is available on the car you are buying.
For each candidate, establish the identity and current configuration of the vehicle, then confirm the specific features Tesla makes available for that car in its region. Do not treat a listing that says “FSD,” “Autopilot” or “self-driving” as a precise specification. Ask the seller to show the vehicle’s software screens and to clarify whether the advertised capability is purchased, subscription-based, part of another package, or merely available to subscribe to.
- Market and location: Confirm availability for the car’s current region. Tesla says subscription availability and feature sets vary by market and location.
- Model, trim and manufacture date: Record the exact vehicle details; the model name alone does not establish capability.
- Configuration and options: Verify the actual car’s configuration rather than assuming it matches a similarly named vehicle.
- Hardware and software: Check what is installed and whether the car is eligible for the particular feature. Some configurations may require a separately purchased hardware upgrade.
- Controls and functions: Confirm which functions are present on this model and software version. Do not infer that every Tesla has the same controls or capabilities.
Tesla’s subscription information and FSD (Supervised) support page describe the configuration and regional qualifications. When an eligibility answer could change your decision, verify it in the Tesla app or against the vehicle itself before agreeing on a price.

How to verify FSD on a used Tesla
For a vehicle you can inspect, Tesla’s instructions are to open Controls > Software. Check the included package for “Full Self Driving Capability,” then look under “Software” for “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software.” Ask the seller to demonstrate both screens while you are with the car. A verbal assurance or a listing description is not equivalent to seeing the entitlement and software status on the vehicle.
- Ask the seller to bring the car online and show the screens. Have them open Controls > Software in the vehicle.
- Inspect the included-package section. Look for “Full Self Driving Capability” if the seller says the car includes a purchased capability.
- Inspect the software section. Look for “Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Software.” The displayed software status is a separate check from the seller’s description of what was purchased.
- Match what you see to the sale terms. If FSD is part of the advertised price, make the transaction contingent on the advertised package being present, and resolve any discrepancy before completing the sale.
- Check current eligibility and cost as well. If the car does not show an included entitlement, confirm in the Tesla app or with Tesla whether it can subscribe, what the current price is, and whether a hardware prerequisite applies.
Tesla describes different outcomes for used cars depending on the prior owner’s status. If the previous owner subscribed, the buyer needs their own subscription. If the previous owner purchased FSD outright and did not transfer it to a new vehicle, Tesla says the capability remains with that vehicle. If FSD came through the Luxe Package, whether it remains depends on when that package was purchased. Because these histories have different consequences, ask which situation applies and verify the current status on the car rather than assuming every used Tesla advertised with FSD has the same entitlement.
Do not rely on the seller’s ability to transfer the feature after the sale. Tesla says its transfer program ended March 31, 2026. Its transfer support page also says that a completed transfer stays with the receiving vehicle if that vehicle is later sold. These points are not a guarantee that a transfer will be offered for a new transaction; verify the car’s present entitlement instead. See Tesla’s FSD transfer terms.

Compare the real cost: included capability, subscription or upgrade
A Tesla that displays an included purchased capability is not financially equivalent to one that requires monthly access, or one that may need extra hardware first. Compare the arrangement that applies to each specific car. Tesla’s support page currently lists FSD (Supervised) at $99 USD per month, subject to terms and change. The cited support information describes the feature as subscription-only; availability is limited to selected markets, and present eligibility and price should be checked in the Tesla app or on the vehicle.
Tesla says some configurations may need a hardware upgrade at additional cost. Eligibility for that upgrade depends on the vehicle and region. Do not assume a subscription price is the only cost until you have established that the car is eligible and whether it needs the prerequisite upgrade. Tesla says subscriptions are non-refundable; if canceled, access continues through the current billing period. Review the current terms before subscribing because they can change.
| What the car appears to offer | What to verify | How to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Purchased capability included with the vehicle | Confirm “Full Self Driving Capability” on Controls > Software, and check the software status on the same vehicle. | Establish that the entitlement is present and included in the agreed sale price; do not count a seller’s unverified claim as an included feature. |
| Subscription access | Confirm the exact car and region are eligible, and check the current price and terms in the Tesla app or on the vehicle. Tesla’s support page lists $99 USD per month, subject to change. | Calculate the recurring cost over the period you expect to keep the car, rather than comparing only the first month. |
| Possible hardware prerequisite | Ask whether this configuration needs an upgrade, whether it is eligible, and what the current additional cost is. | Include the prerequisite cost in the ownership comparison; a subscription does not by itself establish hardware eligibility. |
| No entitlement or uncertain eligibility | Resolve whether the car can use the feature in its market and configuration before treating FSD as part of its value. | Compare the vehicle on the basis of features you have verified, not a possible future purchase or transfer. |
The $99 figure is Tesla’s listed monthly USD price, not a promise of a universal or permanent price. Regional availability, vehicle configuration, prerequisites and current terms can change what a buyer can actually get. Tesla’s subscription page is the relevant source for eligibility and terms; confirm the live offer for the specific vehicle before deciding.

Know what the features are meant to do—and what they do not prove
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as able to follow a route, change lanes, choose route forks, navigate around other vehicles and objects, and make turns. The package also lists Autopark and Summon functions. Summon is limited to select vehicles and depends on configuration, hardware, software and region. The available functions and the way a driver controls them differ by model and model year, so verify the feature list for the actual car.
Those described capabilities do not remove the need for driver attention. For instance, route following does not mean the car will handle every intersection or road condition without intervention. The Model S manual’s examples—narrow roads with oncoming traffic, construction zones and complex intersections—are reminders to consult the manual for the car under consideration and to be prepared to take control. They should not be treated as an exhaustive list of situations that demand attention.
Tesla’s support page also reports “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” for vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged compared with vehicles driven without it, attributing the figures to its Vehicle Safety Report. The cited page does not state the report’s year, methodology, exposure adjustment or comparison details. These are Tesla-reported comparisons, not independently established predictions for an individual buyer. They do not answer whether a particular used car has the feature, whether it is eligible, or whether its driver can safely rely on it in a given situation. Treat vehicle-specific verification and supervised test driving as more useful purchase checks.

Try the system on roads relevant to your driving
Tesla says a demo drive may be available at a store, including self-serve demo drives where offered and subject to age, license and local availability. Tesla also says new Model S, 3, X, Y and Cybertruck owners will have an opportunity to experience current features with a trial at delivery. Confirm the demo or trial with the local location or on the specific order; neither should be assumed available for every buyer.
If you can try the system, choose a route and road conditions resembling the trips you make most often. A short drive on a simple road will not tell you how the car behaves in all the places you need to drive, and another person’s demonstration is not a substitute for your own evaluation. Keep your attention on the road and be ready to take over throughout the drive.
- Ask which features are enabled on the demonstration car and whether it matches the model and configuration you are considering.
- Pay attention to how the system handles the kinds of turns, route choices, surrounding traffic and road layouts you encounter.
- Notice whether you are comfortable supervising it and responding promptly when needed; do not judge the experience as if you could stop monitoring.
- Ask whether any trial is tied to a new-vehicle delivery, its duration and terms, and what access would cost afterward. Confirm the details for your order rather than assuming a trial will be included.
A demo can help you decide whether the features suit your driving, but it cannot establish that another car has the same hardware, software, entitlement or local availability. Use the actual vehicle’s screens and eligibility information for those checks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a side-by-side checklist when comparing Teslas
When two listings both advertise driver assistance, compare the particulars below rather than treating a shared label as proof that the cars are equivalent. Tesla’s sources establish that these factors can affect feature availability; they do not establish that one model is categorically safer or better for every buyer.
| Comparison point | Question to answer for each car |
|---|---|
| Entitlement | Is purchased capability visibly included, or would you need to subscribe? |
| Vehicle history | If used, was FSD purchased outright, previously subscribed to, or supplied through a Luxe Package—and what does the vehicle currently show? |
| Hardware and software | What is installed, what software status appears, and is the car eligible for the functions you want? |
| Market and feature set | Are the same capabilities actually available for both cars in their region and configuration? |
| Model year, trim and configuration | Do the specific vehicles differ in ways that change controls, functions or eligibility? |
| Total cost | What would subscription charges add over your expected ownership period, and is there an additional prerequisite hardware cost? |
| Opportunity to try it | Can you take a demo drive in a comparable car on roads relevant to your use? |
If a listing’s premium depends on FSD, treat an unresolved entitlement, hardware or eligibility question as a purchase issue to settle before signing—not as an assumption to price in afterward.
Before you agree to the sale
- Inspect Controls > Software on the actual vehicle and record what appears under the included package and software sections.
- Confirm whether the feature is purchased and included, requires a new subscription, or is unavailable for that vehicle.
- Check market-specific eligibility, hardware prerequisites, the current subscription price and terms in the Tesla app or current Tesla support pages.
- Ask the seller to resolve any gap between the listing and the vehicle’s displayed status; do not rely on a promised transfer.
- If you plan to use the system, try a demo if locally available and make your decision with continuous driver supervision in mind.
For details that can vary by model, consult the owner’s manual for the exact car. Tesla’s Model S manual section on Full Self-Driving (Supervised) illustrates why a single model’s manual should not be treated as a universal guide to every Tesla.
