Before paying a booking amount, verify the exact India-market variant and written on-road price, plan charging around your home and regular routes, read the vehicle and battery warranty, and confirm insurance, service support and any tax benefit for your registration location. A published range figure is a test-cycle result, not a promise of how far your specific trip will go.
Start with the car you will actually use
Decide how the car will spend most of its time: chauffeured rear-seat journeys, self-driven city use, intercity travel, or a mix. That choice affects which details deserve the most attention. A rear-seat-focused buyer may care more about comfort and cabin space; a self-driver may give more weight to visibility, driver ergonomics and parking. For frequent travel, route charging and luggage space become important. Consider ground clearance, ride and tyre setup against the roads you use, rather than assuming that a luxury badge or high specification automatically suits local conditions.

Confirm the India-market variant
Ask the dealer for the exact India-specific variant sheet, not just a global model page or an online feature list. Equipment, accessories and features shown internationally may not be offered in India. Mercedes-Benz India’s electric-car page, for example, lists its local lineup and cautions that some models, accessories and features shown may not be available in the market. Treat the local lineup as a starting point, then have the dealer confirm the precise vehicle being quoted.

Make the quotations comparable
Request a written, itemized quote for each car you are considering. Separate the ex-showroom price from registration and road tax, insurance, home-charger equipment and installation, optional equipment, and any discount or exchange condition. Ask which amounts are fixed and which may change before delivery. Prices, offers and available variants can change, so confirm the final on-road amount before you commit; there is no single current price recommendation that applies to every model and location.
Keep the comparison on the same basis: confirm whether each quote includes the same insurance assumptions, charger equipment, optional features and registration location. Record the delivery timing and any conditions attached to a discount or exchange offer. If a benefit or discount is part of the buying decision, ask for it to be itemized in the quote rather than subtracting an informal estimate from the advertised price.
Decide whether the range fits your routes
Build a realistic picture of your driving before comparing range figures. Write down your normal daily distance, longest regular intercity trip, typical cruising speeds, passenger and luggage load, and how often the car will run its heating or air conditioning in hot or cold weather. Then map the route legs between places where you can reliably charge. Keep a practical buffer for detours, queues, a charger being unavailable, or higher-than-expected energy use.
Use the manufacturer’s stated range to compare vehicles only on a like-for-like basis. Ask which test cycle applies to the exact variant and request its technical sheet. Do not treat a certification-cycle result as guaranteed Indian real-world range, and do not apply a universal conversion between WLTP or another test cycle and the distance you will achieve. The reviewed official sources do not establish such a conversion.
BMW says the i7’s range depends on driving style, route, outside temperature, heating or air conditioning, pre-conditioning, equipment and load. That is a useful reminder that the same car can cover different distances under different conditions. If possible, arrange a representative drive and discuss your regular route with the dealer, but do not treat one short drive as proof of long-distance performance.
Check charging performance, not just battery size
Ask for the exact variant’s AC charging limit, DC peak charging rate and charging curve, along with its connector types and whether battery pre-conditioning is available. Peak output alone does not describe an entire charging stop: the car’s acceptance rate, battery state and charger conditions all matter. Confirm whether a quoted charging time refers to a particular starting and ending battery level, charger output and vehicle configuration.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) describes multiple charging types, including Type 2 AC charging for four-wheelers, and notes that time varies with both charger and vehicle. Its illustrative figures are not a prediction for a particular luxury model:
| BEE illustration | Illustrative time to 80% | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| 30 kWh battery on a 50 kW fast charger | Less than one hour | BEE FAQ illustration accessed in 2026; not a guarantee for a specific car or charging session. |
| The same illustrative 30 kWh battery on a 15 A plug | Around eight hours | BEE FAQ illustration accessed in 2026; actual time depends on the vehicle and charging conditions. |
Use the example to understand why charger type matters, not to estimate a luxury car’s charging time. Confirm the vehicle’s actual charging specifications and ask the dealer to explain any advertised time using the same assumptions.
Make home charging feasible before you book
A home charger is only useful if the parking space can support installation and you have permission to use it. For a house, rental property or apartment, establish who can approve the work and whether the parking arrangement allows a dedicated installation. Ask the dealer or installer to arrange a site survey and provide a written installed price, including the equipment and work they have actually assessed.
Get clear answers about the electrical supply, wiring, earthing, meter, sanctioned load, civil work and any approvals or permissions required. Find out which of those items are included in the quote and which may be extra. Do not assume that an advertised charger price includes the work needed to connect it at your parking space. In a shared building, resolve the permission question before treating a home installation as part of your plan; if it is not feasible, reassess your dependence on public charging for normal use.
Ask what charging equipment comes with the car: for example, whether it includes a portable charger or AC cable, and which connector it uses. BEE lists Type 2 AC charging for four-wheelers; Mercedes-Benz India describes a Type 2 Mode 3 cable for wallbox or public charging. These examples do not establish that you need to buy an additional cable. Before purchasing any charging accessory, have the dealer confirm the supplied equipment, connector, phase and current for your exact variant.

Test public charging on the journeys you make
Check charging locations on the routes you regularly drive, not just the number of chargers shown on a national map. For each relevant station, verify the connector and output, current availability, access hours, payment method, parking charges and whether vehicles from other brands can use it. Where possible, check the network’s own application and confirm that the station is operating before depending on it for a trip.

BEE identifies itself as the central nodal agency for the national public charging rollout and notes the role of state nodal agencies. That coordination does not guarantee that a particular charger is available, working or accessible when you arrive. A route plan should allow for a detour or a charger that cannot be used, rather than relying on one location.
For regular intercity journeys, check whether the planned charging stops fit the route and the time you are willing to spend charging. Ask the dealer which charging networks the car can use and whether any access or payment arrangements are included. Confirm the details rather than assuming that a charging-network logo or a general compatibility claim means every station is available to you.
Read the warranty as a set of separate promises
Do not treat “the car warranty” as a single answer. Ask for written coverage terms for the vehicle as a whole, high-voltage battery, electric motors and power electronics, charging equipment, paint and corrosion, and roadside assistance. For each, check the time and distance limits, exclusions, service obligations, transferability to a future owner, and the procedure if a fault appears.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For the traction battery, look for any stated capacity or state-of-health threshold and the conditions for a repair or replacement claim. Ask what evidence is used to assess a claim and whether operating limits or maintenance requirements affect coverage. BEE says battery warranties vary across EV categories and may depend on usage, so one manufacturer’s term should not be treated as an industry-wide standard.
BMW India’s current warranty-policy page states that high-voltage battery cells in its battery electric vehicles are covered for eight years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first. The statement is specific to BMW India’s policy and subject to its terms, including the requirement to follow manufacturer instructions and operating limitations. It is not a benchmark or promise for another brand or model.
Check who will maintain and repair the car locally
Before booking, identify the authorized service centre you would use from your home or workplace. Ask the service provider who can diagnose and repair high-voltage systems, where the car would be taken if it cannot be driven, whether mobile support is available, and how parts are sourced. Request written information about any service package, its price, included work, duration and distance limit.

Ask how roadside assistance handles a vehicle that runs out of charge or develops a charging fault, and whether recovery takes it to a suitable authorized facility. Get the relevant contact and coverage terms before delivery. Do not infer local repair capability or response time from a manufacturer’s national presence: current city-by-city response times, repair capacity and parts lead times are not established by the cited official material. Have your local dealer answer those questions directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrice insurance and running costs for your circumstances
Get insurance quotations for the exact variant and insured declared value. Compare the policy wording, not only the premium. Check how it treats the traction battery, charging cable or wallbox, towing and roadside assistance, cashless repair locations, deductibles, depreciation, consumables and exclusions. A generic online estimate may not reflect the cover or repair arrangements appropriate to a high-value car.
Estimate charging costs using your likely mix of home and public charging, the applicable electricity tariff and your expected use. BEE notes that home charging costs vary by state tariff and battery capacity and provides a tentative ownership-cost calculator. Your actual bill will also depend on charging losses, usage and public charging prices, so a calculator result is an estimate rather than a guaranteed saving.
For a useful total-cost comparison, account for purchase and financing costs, insurance, home charging installation, electricity, service packages, tyres, likely repairs outside warranty and resale assumptions. Use the same ownership period and assumptions for each car. Without local prices and clearly stated assumptions, it is not possible to conclude that a particular EV will necessarily cost less to own.

ARAI describes CMVR vehicle type approval as addressing requirements for road use in India. Confirm that the exact model and variant are approved and can be registered through the normal authorized process. This matters especially if you are considering an import or unusual specification: do not assume that approval for a related model or a car sold in another country covers the vehicle being offered to you.
Do not assume a central purchase incentive covers a luxury passenger EV. The PM E-DRIVE FAQ sets eligibility and scheme-timing conditions, including that resold EVs do not qualify for incentives. Check the current official conditions for the exact vehicle and purchase timing. If a benefit is claimed, ask the dealer to show how it applies and have any amount included in the written on-road quotation rather than relying on an informal estimate.

Registration charges, road tax, state policy and electricity tariffs can differ by jurisdiction and change over time. Use the current rules for the state where the car will be registered, checking the relevant state government and transport authority information. BEE’s policy resources can help identify state policy and tariff material, but they do not replace confirmation against the current local rules.
Compare cars on the same ownership questions
When considering two or more cars, compare the exact India-market variants using the same criteria. A useful side-by-side assessment includes:
- Use and comfort: rear-seat experience, driver ergonomics, cabin and luggage space, ride, visibility, tyre setup and ground clearance for your roads.
- Range and charging: applicable test cycle, route legs, AC input limit, DC peak and charging curve, connector, pre-conditioning and access to charging networks on your routes.
- Ownership cover: vehicle and battery warranty terms, service package, high-voltage support, roadside recovery and local parts access.
- Total cost: written on-road price, financing, insurance, home charging installation, electricity tariff, servicing, tyres and realistic resale assumptions.
- Local fit: dealer and service access, permission to install charging, state charges or incentives, and the reliability of route chargers.
BMW’s i7 information and Mercedes-Benz India’s local electric-car lineup illustrate why specifications need context: one source provides range and charging details with dependencies, while the other describes models offered in India and cautions that not every feature shown is locally available. They are examples of information to verify, not a complete survey of the market or a head-to-head test.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a luxury EV’s published range the distance I can expect on Indian roads?
No. A stated range is based on a test cycle, not a guarantee for an individual trip. BMW says i7 range can vary with driving style, route, outside temperature, heating or air conditioning, pre-conditioning, equipment and load. Ask for the exact variant’s test-cycle basis and plan around your own routes, charging stops and a buffer; the reviewed sources do not support a universal conversion to real-world range.
Does BMW’s eight-year battery warranty apply to every luxury electric car?
No. BMW India states that its high-voltage battery cells are covered for eight years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first, under its policy terms. It is a BMW-specific example, not an industry-wide standard. Check each model’s written battery warranty, including time and distance limits, exclusions, any capacity threshold and required operating or service conditions.
Should I buy a separate Type 2 charging cable?
Not until you confirm what comes with your exact car. BEE lists Type 2 AC charging for four-wheelers, and Mercedes-Benz India describes a Type 2 Mode 3 cable for wallbox or public charging, but neither establishes that every buyer needs an extra cable. Ask the dealer to confirm supplied equipment, connector, phase and current for the variant.
Can I rely on a central incentive or state tax waiver to reduce the price?
Do not assume one applies. PM E-DRIVE eligibility and timing conditions are specific, and its FAQ says resold EVs do not qualify for incentives. State taxes, registration charges and policies also vary and can change. Check the current official rules for the exact vehicle and registration location, and get any claimed benefit itemized in the written quotation.
What should I verify before relying on public charging for an intercity trip?
Check the specific stations on your route for connector, output, live availability, opening hours, payment, parking charges and access for your vehicle brand. A national rollout or map listing does not guarantee a particular charger is operating or accessible when you arrive. Keep a backup stop or detour in your plan.
The Bottom Line
Book only after the exact India-market variant, itemized on-road price, home and route charging plan, warranty terms, local repair support, insurance and location-specific taxes or incentives are clear in writing. Treat range and charging-time figures as conditional specifications, then test whether the real route and ownership arrangements work for you.
