Before buying a factory-fitted CNG car in India, verify that the car’s identity and fuel variant match its records, have the cylinder and CNG system assessed by an authorized workshop, and check the exact variant’s service history, warranty, performance and luggage space. Then confirm that CNG stations and qualified service are practical on your regular routes. A seller’s assurance or a clean-looking cylinder is not proof of system condition.
What does “factory-fitted CNG” mean, and why verify it?
A factory-fitted CNG car is built or supplied in a CNG variant by its manufacturer. That is different from a petrol vehicle converted to CNG after sale. The distinction matters because the car’s identity, kit and cylinder records, approvals, installation evidence and registration paperwork need to match what the seller is claiming.

Do not rely on a badge, a listing description or the seller’s use of “company CNG.” Match the registration certificate (RC), vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number, model, manufacturing year and fuel designation against the vehicle and available manufacturer records. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm the exact CNG variant using the VIN if anything is unclear. India’s AIS-024 in-use maintenance checklist records vehicle identity and CNG system details, including the original-equipment manufacturer or kit agency, and calls for cylinder approval and validity checks: AIS-024 and AIS-028, Version 4.
This guide uses India as its working market because the official sources cited are Indian. Requirements and registration procedures can vary by jurisdiction. In particular, the Delhi Transport Department’s conversion-endorsement process is an example for Delhi, not a nationwide procedure.

What should you check in the vehicle’s identity and paperwork?
Match the car to the records
- Compare the VIN or chassis number physically shown on the vehicle with the RC and available manufacturer or service records.
- Confirm that the model, manufacturing year and fuel designation agree across the documents and the car. Resolve any mismatch before paying a deposit or completing a transfer.
- Ask whether the CNG system is original to the vehicle or was installed after sale. If it is represented as factory-fitted, ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm the exact variant from the VIN or official records.
- Request service invoices and records that identify work on the CNG system, cylinder or related components, along with records of any cylinder replacement or repair.
If the car has been converted
A converted car is not a factory-fitted variant, even if the conversion was professionally installed. Ask for the approved kit and cylinder records, installation certificate and local registration endorsement. The Delhi Transport Department lists cylinder and kit documentation, type approval, an approved layout and an installation test certificate in its CNG endorsement procedure: Delhi Transport Department vehicle registration. Use that list only as a Delhi example; elsewhere, confirm the applicable documents with the relevant transport authority.
If approval or installation records are missing, or the paperwork does not match the vehicle, do not treat the seller’s explanation as a substitute. Pause the purchase until the relevant authority or an authorized professional has clarified what is required and whether the vehicle’s records can be put in order.
How do you check the CNG cylinder and its records?
Read the cylinder identification plate and compare its identifying details with the available records. Note the cylinder’s initial test date, next test due date, approval and serial identifiers, and any recorded repair or replacement. Ask for the documents that support the cylinder’s status rather than relying on an estimate based on the car’s registration year: the cylinder’s own initial test date is the date relevant to the interval described in the cited manufacturer manual.

For cylinder certification, use the applicable government-approved test agency. For a broader system assessment, arrange an inspection at an authorized workshop. What to ask the workshop to assess
Ask the workshop to assess the CNG system for the exact make and model, including the cylinder mounting, associated lines and connections, shut-off arrangements and system operation as relevant to that vehicle. Ask for its findings in writing, including any repairs or further checks it recommends. A buyer should not try to certify a high-pressure system from appearance alone or treat a personal visual check as a leak test.
If a record is missing, a test appears overdue, the cylinder or installation looks damaged, or anyone suspects a leak, stop the purchase process until an authorized professional has assessed the vehicle. Indraprastha Gas Limited cautions customers: “Never install CNG kit/ cylinder in the vehicle from any un-authorized road-side conversion workshop/ outlet.” Its advice concerns installation, but reinforces why questionable system work should be checked by a qualified provider: IGL safety information for CNG customers.
How should you review service history and warranty?
Compare the car’s service invoices and recorded maintenance with the exact owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. Look for a continuous, credible history and records for CNG-system work, cylinder testing and any replacement. A gap does not by itself establish a defect, but it leaves you with less evidence about how the car has been maintained; account for that uncertainty by asking an authorized workshop to assess it before purchase.
Get written confirmation of any remaining warranty for the specific vehicle, not just a general statement that the manufacturer offers a CNG warranty. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to specify:
- Which CNG components and other parts are covered, and which are excluded.
- The coverage end date and any mileage limit.
- Whether ownership, registration, service history or prior repairs affect coverage.
- Whether the quoted warranty follows the car after a change of ownership.
Manufacturer warranty information is model- and terms-specific. Confirm the current coverage against the VIN, variant and the car’s history, and retain the written response with the purchase records.

How do you compare CNG variants, performance and fuel figures?
Compare the exact model and variant rather than assuming that one CNG car’s figures apply to another, or even to every version of the same model. Check the transmission, equipment, CNG and petrol performance, fuel capacities and the space left for luggage with the cylinder installed. The manufacturer pages below illustrate why the figure must stay tied to the specific model and source:

These entries are not a head-to-head road test: they concern different models, and the figures are the respective manufacturers’ published claims. Do not choose a car solely because one displayed number is higher. Your actual consumption can differ from a certified figure, so use the figures as variant-specific reference points and weigh them alongside performance, equipment, transmission and day-to-day suitability.
For each car on your shortlist, compare its CNG and petrol power and torque, published efficiency, petrol and CNG capacities, equipment and transmission using the current specification page or brochure for the exact variant. If a particular number is not published for that variant, ask the manufacturer or dealer for the official specification instead of borrowing a number from another trim.
How can you judge whether CNG will make financial sense?
There is no reliable universal savings percentage or payback period in the cited sources. The result depends on your local fuel prices, annual distance, the exact car’s real-world use, the price premium over a comparable petrol variant, maintenance and the condition of a used car. Avoid treating a model’s certified efficiency figure as a guarantee that a particular buyer will recover a purchase-price difference in a fixed number of months.
Build a comparison with your own inputs. Check the current CNG and petrol prices where you actually refuel, estimate your annual distance from your recent driving, and use a realistic consumption estimate for the particular car. Then compare estimated fuel spending for the CNG and petrol choices, adding the CNG variant’s purchase-price difference and any relevant maintenance or cylinder-testing expense you can establish for that car. Keep assumptions visible, and use a range if consumption or annual mileage is uncertain. Do not count a theoretical saving as certain until you have accounted for those inputs.

Also compare equipment and purchase price on a like-for-like basis. A CNG variant may have different equipment from the petrol version you are considering, so separate the cost of the fuel system from differences in trim and features. Use current local dealer quotations for the actual cars; the cited material does not establish a current price comparison.
What practical checks matter for routes, refuelling and service?
Check CNG access on the routes you regularly use, not just whether a national locator or service network exists. Identify stations near home, work and frequent destinations, consider whether they fit your usual travel times, and verify that they are operating and convenient in practice. A locator is a starting point, not proof that a station will be useful for your routine.
Maruti Suzuki provides a CNG pump locator and describes its service network on its CNG page, but those national-level resources do not establish convenient station or workshop access for a particular buyer’s area: Maruti Suzuki CNG. Check nearby authorized service options for the make and model you are considering, and call to confirm that the workshop can assess and maintain that specific CNG variant.

Observe how the specific car operates
Drive the car in the modes and conditions the seller permits. Watch for warning lights, hesitation, unusual smells or irregular operation. These observations are reasons to seek a qualified assessment, not a basis for diagnosing a CNG fault yourself. Have any concern checked by an authorized workshop before you proceed.

Test the space you will actually use
With the cylinder installed, check whether the remaining luggage area works for your regular bags, work equipment, child seats or other loads. Try the seating and loading arrangement you expect to use rather than assuming that all CNG cars have the same cabin or cargo layout. If you routinely carry passengers or luggage, make this a purchase decision criterion, not an afterthought.

Which checks should be completed before you commit?
- Confirm identity and variant. Match the VIN or chassis number, model, year and fuel designation to the RC and available manufacturer records. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to confirm factory-CNG status if needed.
- Resolve conversion history. If the vehicle was converted after sale, obtain the kit and cylinder records, installation evidence and the endorsement required by the local transport authority.
- Review cylinder records. Record the cylinder identifiers, initial test date, due date, approval information and any repair or replacement history. Confirm the applicable test schedule for the exact vehicle.
- Book professional checks. Have an authorized workshop assess the CNG system and use the applicable government-approved agency for cylinder certification. Obtain the findings before deciding.
- Check maintenance and warranty. Review the service history against the exact manual and schedule, and get written, VIN-specific warranty terms.
- Compare the right variants. Check published performance, efficiency, capacities, transmission and equipment for each exact trim; compare certified efficiency as a reference, not a real-world promise.
- Test practical fit and local access. Drive the particular car, check luggage and seating, and verify useful refuelling and authorized service access on your regular routes.
- Calculate with local inputs. Compare current local fuel prices, your annual distance, realistic consumption assumptions and the actual purchase-price difference without assuming a universal payback.
When should you pause or walk away?
Do not complete the purchase while a material identity, approval or safety question remains unresolved. Pause if the VIN or fuel designation does not match the records; the seller cannot establish whether the car is factory-fitted or converted; cylinder identification or test records are absent or inconsistent; a test appears overdue; or a qualified professional identifies damage or questionable installation. A lower asking price does not resolve any of those uncertainties.
Likewise, treat a seller’s refusal to allow an authorized assessment as a practical warning. Do not try to compensate for missing technical evidence with an informal visual check. Resume consideration only when the relevant records and professional assessment provide enough information to judge the vehicle and any necessary corrective work.
How should you compare two shortlisted cars?
Use the same criteria for both cars and give priority to items that can make one vehicle unsuitable, such as mismatched records, unclear cylinder status, poor route access or unusable luggage space. A single mileage figure cannot establish a universal best choice.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Driving and capacity | Exact-variant CNG and petrol performance, transmission, published efficiency, fuel capacities, seats and usable luggage space. |

Compare the written evidence, not just the seller’s description. If one car has a lower purchase price but uncertain records or a cylinder assessment still pending, include the cost and uncertainty of resolving those issues in your decision rather than treating the two offers as equivalent.
