The current BMW M5 can drive on electric power for short trips when its battery is charged, but it is not an electric car with a V8 reserved for emergencies. Its plug-in hybrid system combines an electric motor with a V8 for both electric running and high performance. BMW USA estimates electric range at about 25 miles for the M5 Sedan and 24 miles for the M5 Touring; those are estimates, not promises about a particular commute. How often you can drive electrically depends on charging, temperature, route and driving style.
What the M5’s plug-in hybrid system does
The M5 pairs a V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into its eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. A high-voltage battery under the floor supplies the motor. BMW says this packaging avoids restricting cabin or luggage space, and describes the system’s thermal management as designed for everyday driving as well as track use. The M Hybrid control offers three standard modes. They change how the car uses its engine, motor and battery; they do not make the official range a guaranteed distance.

Choosing a mode for a typical trip
For everyday use, HYBRID is the blended option: the car coordinates its two power sources, with Comfort using electric power more often and Sport or Sport Plus keeping the engine engaged. ELECTRIC is the mode to select when the battery is charged and the aim is electric driving, but it should not be treated as a lockout that prevents the V8 from starting. A forceful kickdown request or manual operation using the shift paddles can bring the engine in.
eCONTROL addresses a different need: retaining or building charge for a later part of the journey. That may be useful if a driver wants charge available later, but it is not a free way to create electric range. BMW says the mode can increase charge through recuperation or by increasing engine load, and warns that frequent Battery Control use can reduce overall efficiency. The practical trade-off is between managing when charge is available and avoiding unnecessary use of a function BMW says can lower efficiency.

How far can the M5 go on electric power?
For 2025/2026 US-market BMW plug-in hybrids, BMW USA lists approximate EPA electric-range estimates of 25 miles for the M5 Sedan and 24 miles for the M5 Touring. BMW says these estimates are attainable when fully charged under ideal conditions. Actual range can vary with vehicle configuration, tires and wheels, driving style, traffic and outside temperature. BMW also notes that some new model-year figures may be preliminary estimates rather than completed EPA certification; check the current EPA listing for the specific vehicle before describing a figure as certified. A separate BMW Group vehicle-footprint document for an assessed 2024 model-year M5 reports 65 km (40 miles) of WLTP electric range, battery capacity of 22.1 kWh gross and 18.6 kWh net, and WLTP combined fuel consumption of 10.6 L/100 km (26.6 mpg) with the battery discharged. The WLTP range figure used a fully charged battery. These are figures for a specified assessment vehicle and test procedure, not US EPA ratings or a direct forecast of an owner’s daily range. BMW’s 2025 US launch release gives 14.8 kWh of usable battery energy for the US vehicle it describes. That is a different market and specification context from the 18.6 kWh net capacity in the separate footprint document; the values should not be combined or treated as interchangeable battery figures. These figures answer different questions, so the labels matter. The US estimates distinguish the Sedan and Touring and refer to BMW USA’s approximate EPA-oriented range information for 2025/2026 vehicles. The 65 km figure belongs to a specified 2024 assessment vehicle under WLTP. Test procedure, market, model year, certification status and vehicle configuration all affect what a number means. It would be misleading to rank the WLTP number against the US estimates as if both were measurements made on the same cycle.

It can cover some short local journeys electrically if it starts with sufficient charge and conditions allow electric operation. Compare your usual route with BMW’s US estimates as a rough reference, not as a guaranteed distance. A longer commute, cold weather, heavy traffic, climate-control use or a forceful driving style can reduce how much of the trip is electric.
The practical question is whether regular charging fits your routine. If you can charge at home or at a dependable destination, you can make electric mode available more often for short trips. Without convenient charging, the M5 still operates as a petrol-electric hybrid, but the electric-only portion will be limited; BMW also says power reserves for eBoost will be lower without charging. For a commute decision, consider more than the route’s stated distance. Ask whether you can charge before the trip, whether the journey will be driven in conditions similar to the ideal estimate, and whether you need to preserve charge for a later leg. The battery’s state of charge, outside temperature, route and climate-control use can all change how much of a given trip is electric. A route that appears to fit the headline estimate is not a guarantee that the car will remain in ELECTRIC mode from departure to arrival.

Charging options and what happens when the battery runs down
BMW recommends regular charging to maximize electric driving and efficiency. Its US guidance names a household 120 V outlet, a 240 V outlet, a BMW Wallbox or a public charging station as options. Regenerative braking recovers some energy, while Battery Control can maintain or increase charge during a drive. When the battery is depleted, BMW says the engine automatically takes over. For home charging, a market-compatible 240 V Level 2 setup is an optional route to more convenient regular charging. Before buying equipment, verify the vehicle’s charging connector and have the home electrical installation assessed for the intended equipment. Charging access changes what the plug-in system can do for a particular owner. A dependable home or destination charging point lets the driver replenish the battery regularly and have electric operation available for more short local journeys. If charging is inconvenient, the M5 does not stop functioning when the plug-in battery’s available charge runs down: BMW says the engine automatically takes over. But an owner in that situation should not expect the same frequency of electric-only driving, and BMW notes that power reserves for eBoost are lower without charging.
Do not use a general charging-time range as a promise for this car. Actual time depends on the model-specific equipment and charging conditions, and BMW’s general PHEV page gives broad charging-time ranges, not an M5-specific recharge duration. Likewise, the Touring’s 11 kW AC capability should not be presented as a Sedan specification on the basis of the cited Touring release alone.

Weather and driving conditions that can limit electric use
BMW identifies driving style, route, outside temperature, climate control and preconditioning as factors that affect range. Cold weather can also affect whether electric-only operation is immediately available. - Temperature: cold can reduce range and, below BMW M’s stated −10 °C threshold, delay fully electric availability.
- Driving style and route: demanding acceleration and the route profile affect how much electric range is available.
- Climate control: cabin heating or cooling can affect range.
- Configuration: BMW says vehicle configuration and tire and wheel choice can change the estimated range.
- Charging routine: starting with a charged battery is central to making use of the M5’s electric-only capability.
For planning, treat the official range as a reference point and leave room for conditions that differ from the ideal test estimate. No single figure can establish whether a particular driver’s commute will stay electric in every season.
What the plug-in hybrid system means in practice
The M5’s plug-in system adds a useful electric-driving option to a V8 performance car, but it does not make every trip electric or guarantee a specific fuel saving. The most relevant ownership distinction is between drivers who can charge routinely and those who cannot: regular charging makes short electric trips more available, while depleted charge brings the engine into the job. Mode selection then determines whether the car prioritizes electric operation, blended power or preserving charge for later use.
Keep the range numbers in their proper context: BMW USA’s approximate 24–25-mile figures are US-market estimates, while the 65 km figure is a WLTP result for a specified assessment vehicle. Neither should be read as a universal everyday outcome.
