It showed a Linux desktop, browser, and YouTube playback—not a replacement for Tesla’s operating system or a demonstrated change to driving controls. The account is a historical proof of concept, not evidence that the approach works on current Model 3 hardware or software.
What the Tesla Model 3 Ubuntu mod demonstrated
The project was described by the owner, posting as trsohmers, in a 2018 Reddit thread titled “Rooted Tesla Model 3 running Ubuntu and Youtube.” The owner credited researcher Ingineerix with finding an initial temporary-root exploit and said their collaboration later obtained persistence and read/write access to the root filesystem. The owner estimated that this individual effort took about a month and roughly 100 hours of direct work; that is not a general estimate for vehicle research or a measure of how difficult another car would be to modify. The original Reddit post and discussion record the account.
Contemporary coverage described SSH access and Ubuntu 16.04 with an Xfce desktop, a browser, and YouTube video playback. The visible result was a desktop environment running alongside Tesla’s software, as reported by SlashGear in November 2018 and CleanTechnica in December 2018.
Ubuntu ran in a chroot, not as a replacement operating system
The key architectural detail came from trsohmers in the original discussion: “I believe cwayne18 is referring to the fact that I’m running Ubuntu in a chroot jail within their buildroot/AGL install.” A chroot provides a process with a different apparent root directory, allowing a Linux user-space environment to run within the host system’s context. In this case, the owner described Ubuntu running within Tesla’s existing buildroot/AGL installation; the account does not describe replacing the car’s base operating system with Ubuntu.

That distinction matters: the demonstration was an added user-space environment on the infotainment computer, not a conversion of the vehicle into a general-purpose Ubuntu installation. It also does not establish that the same setup can be installed on another Model 3.
What hardware the owner reported
The specifications below are the owner’s description of the particular 2018 Model 3 involved, not a verified specification list for every Model 3 or later infotainment revision. The owner qualified the RAM detail with “I think.” SlashGear repeated similar hardware details in its contemporaneous coverage, but that does not make them current fleet-wide specifications.

These details are attributed to trsohmers in the original 2018 thread. The owner’s distinction between infotainment and the separately described Autopilot board is not evidence that the mod accessed or changed Autopilot functions.
What the demonstration did not establish
- Driving or Autopilot changes: The reported result was shell access and a desktop/browser environment with video playback. The cited accounts do not demonstrate modified vehicle controls or general access to Autopilot.
- Current compatibility: The sources describe a 2018 car and do not establish that the technique works with contemporary hardware, firmware, or security controls.
- A complete modification guide: Tesla’s official open-source resources page lists image sources for the Self-Driving and Infotainment systems in its buildroot repository, along with infotainment kernel sources that include an Intel branch. Those listings document some published source components; they are not instructions for reproducing the mod and do not establish that all drivers or system components are available.
- Warranty or service outcome: CleanTechnica raised warranty implications but did not determine them. The available accounts do not establish whether a current owner’s warranty coverage or service eligibility would be affected.
Why reproducing it today is an open question
The original account documents a historical result, not a repeatable procedure for current vehicles. The owner also said kernel-module signing limited loading new modules and expressed doubt that proprietary or NDA-restricted display and audio modules would be available. That was the owner’s assessment in 2018; it should not be treated as a verified description of every software version or current Tesla vehicle.

There are no verified current replication steps or compatibility results in the cited accounts. The project is best understood as an embedded-systems proof of concept: it showed that one owner reported gaining persistent root-level access to one Model 3 infotainment system and running a Linux user-space environment within it. It does not provide a safe, validated path for modifying a car today.
