Guests saw Optimus units walk through the venue, dance, answer questions, play rock-paper-scissors, interact with attendees, and help serve drinks. Those scenes showed the range of behavior Tesla wants the robot eventually to perform. Post-event reporting, however, found that many public-facing interactions were remotely operated or assisted by humans, making the demonstration’s autonomy level difficult to verify independently.

What happened at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event?
Tesla held its “We, Robot” presentation on October 10, 2024, at Warner Bros. in Burbank, California. The main focus was the company’s robotaxi concept and its broader vision for autonomous transportation. Optimus became a major part of the spectacle, with several humanoid robots appearing around the venue and interacting with guests.
Contemporary coverage described Optimus units walking, dancing, answering questions, playing games, and participating in drink service. These moments were designed to show a robot that could operate in human environments rather than remain confined to a factory or laboratory.

Tesla’s official event messaging placed Optimus inside the company’s larger “future of autonomy” strategy. The company describes the robot as a humanoid application of technologies it already develops for vehicles, including batteries, power electronics, motors, gearboxes, software, and AI inference hardware [c001].
Watch the Optimus demonstration with the right caveat
The event video is persuasive because it compresses many difficult-looking tasks into a short, entertaining presentation. Optimus appears to move through a crowded space, respond to people, manipulate objects, and perform social interactions. But those are not all the same technical problem.
- Walking and balance: The robot must keep itself upright, plan foot placement, and adapt to the floor and surrounding obstacles.
- Navigation: It must perceive people and objects and choose where to move in an uncontrolled environment.
- Manipulation: Picking up, handing over, or serving an object requires perception, force control, and precise hand movements.
- Conversation: Answering a question may involve speech recognition, language software, and—in a public demonstration—human assistance or remote operation.
- Safety: A robot operating around guests may be supervised even when some of its movements are automated.
A robot can perform one of these tasks autonomously while receiving help with another. That is why it is too broad to label the entire event either “fully autonomous” or “entirely remote-controlled.” The available reporting supports a mixed interpretation.
Were Tesla’s Optimus robots remotely controlled?
After the event, TechCrunch reported that humans controlled or assisted Optimus during guest interactions, including conversations and other demonstrations [c004]. Axios similarly reported that the robots needed human help at the event and highlighted the difference between Tesla’s public presentation and what the demonstration independently established [c008].
The careful conclusion is that many of the crowd-facing interactions were remotely operated or human-assisted. The reporting does not justify saying that every Optimus unit, or every behavior shown, was controlled remotely.

That distinction matters. Teleoperation is not necessarily evidence that the robot’s hardware or software is unimportant. Human operators may be used to supervise an experimental system, handle unusual situations, provide conversational responses, or prevent an accident in a crowded venue. But teleoperation also means the video cannot be treated as a transparent test of unrestricted autonomy.
In particular, the event did not prove that Optimus could independently enter an ordinary home, identify a wide range of household objects, complete chores without supervision, and recover from unexpected situations. Tesla’s own AI and Robotics materials describe balance, navigation, perception, and physical-world interaction as problems the company still needs to solve [c005].

Tesla presents Optimus as a general-purpose, bipedal robot for work that is unsafe, repetitive, or boring. The company’s stated long-term vision includes daily household tasks and errands, as well as possible workplace applications [c001][c005].
The appeal of a humanoid design is that homes, offices, stores, and factories are already built for people. A robot with a human-like body could theoretically use existing stairs, doors, tools, shelves, and workstations instead of requiring every environment to be redesigned.
That design also creates major engineering challenges. A useful home robot would need to handle clutter, changing lighting, slippery surfaces, fragile objects, pets, children, and ambiguous instructions. It would need to act safely when its sensors are uncertain and explain—or at least tolerate—human intervention. A staged venue demonstration does not answer those questions by itself.

Elon Musk was reported as estimating a possible long-term price of approximately $28,000 to $30,000 [c003]. That figure should not be described as a current MSRP, purchase price, preorder price, or promised delivery price. It was a future target discussed in the context of eventual mass production.
Tesla’s later corporate disclosures continued to describe Optimus as an AI-robotics program under development. Its 2025 annual filing discussed efforts to develop and commercialize AI robots, including Optimus, rather than listing the robot as an established consumer product [c006]. A 2026 filing described factory preparation, construction capacity, and plans for large-scale production lines, but did not establish ordinary consumer availability or completed commercial deliveries [c007].
What the event did—and did not—prove
| What the video demonstrated | What it did not establish |
|---|---|
| Tesla can build and present humanoid robots that walk and perform selected physical behaviors. | That Optimus can operate independently in every ordinary environment. |
| The company is pursuing software and hardware for human-scale robotics. | That all interactions at the event were autonomous. |
| Optimus can participate in a controlled public demonstration. | That it can reliably complete household chores without supervision. |
| Tesla wants to position the robot as a general-purpose machine. | That the robot was a finished commercial product in 2024. |
| A long-term mass-market price was discussed. | That $28,000–$30,000 was a current retail price or delivery commitment. |
Why the Optimus footage attracted so much attention
Most robot demonstrations focus on one narrow capability: walking, lifting, navigating, or grasping. Tesla’s event combined several behaviors with a social setting. That made Optimus feel closer to a consumer product than a research prototype, even though the underlying tasks were likely supported by different levels of automation and supervision.
The presentation also benefited from the event’s setting and format. Guests could see robots moving among people rather than only watching a controlled laboratory clip. Dancing and games made the machines memorable, while drink service suggested a practical future use. These choices were effective communication, but they were also promotional and theatrical. The event was not a standardized robotics benchmark.

How to interpret the video today
The fairest reading is that the “We, Robot” Optimus footage shows Tesla’s direction and demonstration capability, not a verified snapshot of a mass-market autonomous robot.
As of August 12, 2026, Tesla’s own materials still describe Optimus as a development and commercialization effort. The company has discussed factory preparation and future production capacity, but those disclosures do not amount to a standard consumer-order path [c005][c006][c007]. The 2024 event should therefore be viewed historically: it showed what Tesla wanted audiences to imagine about the robot and what the company could stage publicly at that time.
The bottom line on Tesla’s new Optimus video
Optimus stole attention at Tesla’s “We, Robot” event because it offered a vivid glimpse of a robot that could walk, entertain, converse, and assist with everyday tasks. The footage was significant as a public demonstration of Tesla’s ambitions and engineering progress.
