Elon Musk’s 2019 reply about a “360 dash cam feature while parked” referred to Tesla’s Sentry Mode—not a separately announced 360-degree dash-cam product. Sentry Mode uses a supported Tesla’s cameras and sensors to monitor the parked car and can alert the owner or save event footage, but it is not a guarantee against theft, vandalism, or damage.
What Musk said about a parked-car dash cam
In a January 23, 2019 report, Futurism described Tesla owner Andy Sutton asking for a “360 dash cam feature while parked” after finding damage on his Model 3. The report reproduced Musk’s January 22 reply: “Tesla Sentry Mode coming soon for all cars with Enhanced Autopilot.” That was a statement about Sentry Mode, not evidence that Tesla had promised a separate 360-degree camera product. What Sentry Mode does now
Tesla’s current Model S manual describes Sentry Mode as a parked-vehicle security feature. When the car is locked and in Park, its cameras and sensors can monitor for suspicious activity. Depending on what the vehicle detects and how it is configured, it may pulse the headlights, sound an alarm, display a notice that camera recording is in progress, send an alert through the Tesla app, and save event footage to a USB drive. Alerts are not the same as saved footage
For supported vehicles, Dashcam must be enabled for Sentry Mode recording, and a properly formatted USB drive is needed to save camera footage. Tesla says a detected event may still trigger an app alert without USB storage, but no camera recording will be available. USB storage requirements depend on the vehicle
Tesla’s Model 3 manual specifies at least 64 GB of storage capacity, sustained write speed of at least 4 MB/s, USB 2.0 compatibility, and proper formatting for a USB drive used with Dashcam and Sentry Mode. It also warns that not every USB port supports footage functions. As storage fills, older clips may be overwritten or Sentry clips deleted. Those figures are Model 3 manual requirements, not a universal specification for every Tesla. The Model Y manual also requires a properly formatted USB drive to store and retrieve Dashcam footage, and describes recording and automatic event-saving as dependent on vehicle state and detection. Why Sentry Mode is not a security guarantee
Tesla cautions Model S owners: “Do not rely on Sentry Mode to protect Model S from all possible security threats.” Detection or alarm activation can fail in some circumstances, and camera footage is useful only if an event is detected and recorded.
