Stellantis quality concerns are a real reason for U.S. buyers to investigate a specific vehicle carefully, but the evidence does not show that every Stellantis vehicle is unreliable or that every owner will face a predictable extra repair bill. The company’s 2025 annual report disclosed a substantial revision to warranty-provision estimates and about 13.4 million vehicles it decided to recall. Independent ratings, meanwhile, vary by brand and measure: Ram led J.D. Power’s 2024 initial-quality ranking, while Jeep was among the lowest-ranked brands in Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey. For a buyer or owner, the useful question is not whether Stellantis is reliable as a whole; it is whether a particular model year, powertrain and vehicle history fit the risk you can accept.
What Stellantis’ quality disclosures do—and do not—tell you
Stellantis is a corporate group, not a single vehicle with one reliability record. Its brands and models use different designs, powertrains and equipment, and any specific reliability finding has to be read in the context of the vehicle and market it covers. A corporate disclosure can be a meaningful warning about quality risk across the business, but it cannot tell an individual buyer how often a particular model will break or what that owner’s repairs will cost.

In its 2025 annual report, Stellantis said it recognized a €5.3 billion expense in the second half of 2025 after changing its estimate for contractual warranty provisions. The company cited increased cost inflation and deterioration in quality associated with operational choices that did not deliver expected quality performance. This is a company-level estimate change; it is not an average warranty claim, a pure measure of defect frequency, or a bill passed directly to vehicle owners. The filing covers Stellantis’ global operations, whereas the owner resources and study results discussed here are U.S.-focused.

The same report said Stellantis decided to recall approximately 13.4 million vehicles during 2025. “Decided to recall” describes campaign decisions, not the number of completed repairs or necessarily the number of unique current owners. A recall applies to vehicles identified by a campaign, with eligibility and remedy depending on the campaign and vehicle. The count is important context for the scale of the company’s recall activity, but it is not a reliability score, a count of all vehicles with a defect, or an estimate of the chance that any one vehicle will fail.

Why the ratings do not all point in the same direction
Vehicle-quality measures answer different questions. A survey of owners soon after buying a new vehicle can capture early problems and repair visits; a survey asking owners about reliability over time addresses a different period of ownership. Brand rankings also depend on which vehicles and owners a study has enough information to assess. These distinctions explain how a brand can score strongly on one measure and still warrant careful research on other aspects of ownership.
Ram in J.D. Power’s 2024 initial-quality study
J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Initial Quality Study reported 148 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100) for Ram, the highest-ranking brand overall in that study. The U.S. industry average was 194 PP100. Lower PP100 indicates higher initial quality within this study’s measure. The results came from 99,144 purchasers and lessees of new 2024-model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days; J.D. Power said the measure combined owner input with dealership repair-visit data.
That is a favorable early-ownership result for Ram in a specific U.S. study, not evidence that every Ram model is trouble-free or that long-term durability is assured. The study’s 90-day window does not answer how often a vehicle will need repairs after years of use. J.D. Power senior director of auto benchmarking Frank Hanley described an industry-wide challenge in the study release: “It is not surprising that the introduction of new technology has challenged manufacturers to maintain vehicle quality.” The comment is not a diagnosis of Stellantis or any one brand.

Jeep in Consumer Reports’ 2024 survey
An Associated Press report on Consumer Reports’ 2024 subscriber survey said Jeep was among the five lowest of the 22 brands ranked. The survey represented about 300,000 vehicle owners, but Consumer Reports cautioned that its subscriber sample did not represent all U.S. vehicle purchasers. The result is a dated brand-level signal, not a finding about every Jeep nameplate, model year or powertrain.
The same AP report said the survey did not have enough data to rank Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Maserati or Ram. An absent ranking is not evidence that a brand is either reliable or unreliable. Ratings also change over time: Consumer Reports’ current Chrysler brand page presents 2026 rankings, while cautioning that its cited new-car rankings do not cover used-car reliability or maintenance and repair costs. Treat ratings as snapshots tied to their year, sample and method—not permanent labels.
What matters more than a corporate average
For a purchase decision, narrow the question to the exact vehicle under consideration. A broad brand score may help identify what to investigate, but the model year, powertrain, equipment and condition determine whether a particular finding applies. A recall affecting a plug-in hybrid version, for example, should not be assumed to affect non-plug-in versions. Likewise, a result for one brand cannot simply be assigned to another brand in the Stellantis group.

- Identify the vehicle precisely: record the brand, model, model year, powertrain or trim, and market where it was sold.
- Match the evidence to the ownership period: early-quality findings are not long-term dependability results, and used-vehicle condition adds a separate question.
- Sort issues by consequence: a complaint about infotainment or fit and finish is not equivalent to a powertrain failure, fire risk or loss of drive power.
- Verify campaign status: distinguish an announced recall from a completed repair, and confirm whether a remedy is available for the specific vehicle.
- Assess the individual example: review service and repair records, remaining warranty coverage, mileage, inspection findings and intended use.
Consumer Reports’ reliability methodology highlights why severity matters. Major problems involving engines, transmissions, drive systems, electric motors or EV batteries are more likely to take a vehicle out of service and cost more to fix than other categories of problems. That does not establish a failure rate or repair price for any Stellantis model; it gives buyers a sensible way to prioritize the issues they investigate.

Before buying a used vehicle—or when a relevant warning raises concern—check the actual vehicle identification number (VIN) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s recall lookup. NHTSA’s tool displays unrepaired recalls associated with a VIN. A headline about a recall or a model family is not a substitute for checking the specific vehicle.
- Get the VIN. Use the VIN on the vehicle and compare it with the number on the ownership documents. A seller’s description or a model name alone cannot establish a vehicle’s campaign status.
- Enter it in NHTSA’s recall lookup. Use the official U.S. VIN recall tool to see whether the record shows unrepaired recalls. Read the campaign details rather than relying only on a search result or news headline.
- Ask what has been repaired. If the lookup or seller indicates a campaign, request documentation for completed work. If the vehicle is being considered for purchase, make unresolved campaign status part of the decision before agreeing to buy.
- Confirm the remedy and eligibility. Campaigns have specific affected vehicles and remedies. Check the current notice or contact an authorized dealer if the VIN result, repair record or remedy availability is unclear.
- Recheck when necessary. Campaign information can change, and a prior check does not establish the status of a different VIN. Confirm the current record for the vehicle you will actually own.
A recall is a safety or compliance campaign for affected vehicles; it is not proof that every vehicle in a related model line has the defect. NHTSA distinguishes dates associated with reports from publication dates, so a page’s date should not be mistaken for the date a particular owner’s repair was completed. Official campaign work is handled through the applicable recall process; it does not cover unrelated defects or routine maintenance.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 Wrangler recall page illustrates why vehicle-specific checks matter: a campaign can target particular years or variants and involve a specific remedy, including for safety-relevant electrical or powertrain issues. It should not be used to infer that all Wranglers—or other vehicles in the group—share the issue. The VIN and the campaign notice determine relevance.

The available evidence does not establish a comparable current annual repair-cost figure across all Stellantis brands, nor does it support a general dollar premium for every owner. The €5.3 billion warranty-provision expense is a corporate accounting estimate that includes cost inflation and quality-related factors; dividing it by vehicle sales, owners or recalls would not produce a meaningful personal ownership-cost estimate. The recall total likewise cannot be converted into an owner’s expected repair bill.
Instead, estimate risk for the named vehicle. Separate ordinary scheduled maintenance from unscheduled repair exposure, then consider the specific system involved, the likely severity of a failure, whether coverage remains, and the condition and history of the example. A vehicle with incomplete records or unresolved concerns deserves a different assessment from one with documented maintenance and campaign repairs. A pre-purchase inspection can help establish condition, but it does not replace VIN recall verification or prove that future failures will not occur.

When comparing two used vehicles, use the same questions for both: what evidence applies to this exact model year and powertrain, what repairs are documented, what warranty remains, and what expensive or immobilizing trouble areas deserve closer attention? If reliable model-specific cost estimates are not available, do not substitute the company’s total warranty provision or a brand ranking. Treat uncertainty as a reason to inspect and verify, not as a made-up budget number.
Should you buy a used Stellantis vehicle?
A used Stellantis vehicle can be a reasonable choice if the specific vehicle’s condition, records, recall status and remaining coverage meet your needs. The corporate disclosures justify extra diligence, not an automatic rejection of every model. Conversely, a favorable result for one brand or one early-quality study is not a reason to skip checks on an individual vehicle.
Before making an offer
- Confirm the VIN and use NHTSA’s lookup to identify unrepaired U.S. recalls.
- Ask for repair invoices and service records, and confirm any claimed campaign work with documentation.
- Review model-year- and powertrain-specific reliability information, checking that the study’s geography, time horizon and sample actually match the vehicle.
- Arrange an independent inspection focused on the vehicle’s condition and any relevant warning signs.
- Check remaining warranty coverage and understand which vehicle and repair situations it applies to.
- Decide whether unresolved issues, limited records or a costly repair risk are acceptable for your intended use and budget.
Where a safety issue, loss of drive power or another serious symptom is present, do not treat a general brand ranking as reassurance. Seek an appropriate inspection and use the relevant campaign information to determine next steps. A model-level reputation cannot diagnose the vehicle in front of you.

These figures are useful when read within their limits. The filing supports taking quality risk seriously at the corporate level; the studies show that brand-level results and methods differ; and the VIN lookup provides a direct way to check campaign status for an individual U.S. vehicle. None replaces vehicle-specific research, records and inspection.
