Then verify the exact model year, trim, and build date: features and ratings can vary within a model year, and a high overall score alone does not tell the whole story. This guide focuses on U.S. vehicles; ratings, equipment, and requirements differ in other markets.
Start with crash protection and crash-avoidance ratings
Use ratings to compare how a vehicle performs in specific tests—not as a guarantee that it will prevent injury in every crash. NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings cover frontal crash, side crash, and rollover resistance. IIHS evaluates crashworthiness and crash avoidance, including headlights. Check both organizations when ratings are available, and look at the individual results rather than relying on one overall number.

Crashworthiness concerns how well a vehicle protects people when a crash happens. Crash-avoidance evaluations concern technologies that may help a driver avoid or lessen a crash. These are different kinds of evidence, and it is useful to review both. A strong crashworthiness result does not tell you which driver-assistance features are fitted, while an avoidance feature does not replace a well-designed occupant compartment, seat belts, or airbags.

Confirm the trim and build date as well: equipment or vehicle changes during a model year can affect which rating or award applies. IIHS explains its rating categories and shopping considerations in its shopping guide. Ratings are most useful when you compare the same type of result across candidates and make sure it applies to the actual car being considered.

Compare NHTSA scores on fair terms
NHTSA says frontal ratings and Overall Vehicle Scores should be compared only among vehicles in the same class and with curb weights within 250 pounds. The frontal test represents a collision between vehicles of similar weight, so comparisons outside those limits can mislead. NHTSA permits side and rollover ratings to be compared across classes, but remember that each score reflects specific tests, not every real-world crash scenario. Check category results and any safety-concern warning along with the overall score.
In practice, avoid ranking very different vehicles by their overall star number alone. First check whether the vehicles are in the same class and whether their curb weights fall within the 250-pound comparison window for frontal and overall scores. Then examine frontal, side, and rollover results separately. The fact that side and rollover ratings can be compared across classes does not mean a rating describes every possible crash, occupant, or road condition.
Use IIHS results to look beyond the crash score
IIHS encourages shoppers to consider both crashworthiness and crash avoidance. Its guidance covers occupant-compartment strength, crumple zones, side structure, roof strength, seat belts, airbags, headlights, and driver-assistance evaluations. Check the build date on the vehicle’s certification label near the driver’s door; midyear changes may affect whether a rating or recommendation applies to the car you are considering.

Likewise, a crash-avoidance result is only useful for your purchase if the tested system is present on the trim you are buying. Keep a note of the exact model year, trim, and build date while comparing candidates so that ratings, equipment lists, and the car in front of you are aligned.
Prioritize forward crash protection
NHTSA’s consumer guidance recommends looking for forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure warning. These systems do different jobs, so confirm which ones are actually included on the specific trim. Do not treat a broad marketing label as proof that every related function is included.
Forward collision warning
Forward collision warning (FCW) monitors distance and relative speed and alerts the driver to a possible forward crash. It warns; it does not apply the brakes. Treat it as an extra prompt to react, not as a substitute for following distance or attention.
When comparing cars, check how the warning is delivered and review the owner’s manual for the system’s operating limits. A warning is only useful if the driver notices it and responds. It should not be confused with AEB: FCW alerts, while AEB can take braking action in a collision-imminent situation.

Automatic emergency braking
AEB can apply the brakes when a forward collision is imminent, helping avoid a crash or reduce its severity. NHTSA describes crash-imminent braking and dynamic brake support as parts of the technology. Ask whether the vehicle’s system includes AEB and check its owner’s manual for operating limits. A feature name alone does not establish what situations or speeds the system covers.
Compare what the specific vehicle offers, rather than assuming that all AEB systems work identically. Confirm that AEB is listed for the trim and model year, and consult the manual to learn when the system may warn or intervene and what conditions can limit it. It can support the driver by braking to avoid or mitigate a crash, but it is not a reason to follow more closely or delay braking.
Pedestrian AEB
Pedestrian AEB is designed to detect pedestrians ahead and brake automatically when a collision is imminent. It is a useful additional capability to check, especially if your routes include areas with pedestrians, but it remains an assistive system rather than a guarantee that a collision will be avoided.
Check pedestrian AEB separately from forward AEB; do not assume one feature name guarantees the other. NHTSA’s 2024 ratings-program update includes pedestrian AEB among the technologies being added to the program, but that program change does not establish that a particular car has the feature. Verify the actual model-year rating and trim equipment.
Check lane, blind-spot, and reversing assistance
These features can warn or provide limited intervention in particular situations. Their names can sound similar, so distinguish an alert from a system that can steer or brake.
| Feature | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Lane departure warning | Alerts when the vehicle unintentionally departs its lane. | Confirm it is included on the trim and learn how its alerts work. |
| Lane-keeping assistance | Can gently steer to help prevent unintended lane departure. | Check the operating limits in the owner’s manual; it does not take over driving. |
| Blind-spot warning | Alerts the driver to a vehicle in an adjacent blind spot. | Check the equipment list and test the warning during a safe demonstration. |
| Blind-spot intervention | Can apply light braking or steering if the driver begins moving into an occupied lane. | Do not assume intervention is included just because blind-spot warning is listed. |
| Rear automatic braking | Can brake when a collision while reversing is imminent. | Confirm availability on the exact vehicle; a backup camera is not the same feature. |
| Backup camera | Shows the area behind the vehicle on a screen. | Use it with mirrors and direct observation, not in their place. |
For lane systems, distinguish an alert from a steering intervention. Lane departure warning tells you that an unintended departure may be happening; lane-keeping assistance can gently steer to help prevent it. Neither means that the vehicle will reliably keep itself in a lane or take over driving. Blind-spot warning is similarly distinct from blind-spot intervention, which can provide limited braking or steering if the driver starts moving into an occupied lane.
NHTSA says rearview video systems have been required on new vehicles since May 2018. That requirement does not mean a vehicle also has rear automatic braking. A camera provides a view behind the car; rear AEB can brake when a reverse collision is imminent. Use the camera along with mirrors and direct observation. See NHTSA’s driver-assistance technology guide for explanations of these systems.

Make sure the basics protect the people who will ride in the car
Seat belts and airbags
Have intended drivers and regular passengers sit in the vehicle and check that seat belts fit properly. Review the available airbags and their locations, then consult the vehicle information and owner’s manual to understand the restraint system. A safety rating does not tell you whether a particular seat belt fits every occupant well.
Recommended Free Tools
Think about the people who will regularly use each seating position, not only the driver’s seat. Check that belts sit comfortably and fit as intended for those occupants. Review the vehicle’s airbag information and understand the restraint system from the owner’s manual. These practical checks complement ratings; neither the presence of airbags nor a strong test result answers every question about fit for a particular passenger.
Child seats and LATCH
If a child restraint will be used, install the actual seat in the car before buying if possible. Check whether it fits in the intended seating position and whether the vehicle’s LATCH anchors are accessible. Consult LATCH ease-of-use information as another comparison point; a published rating cannot replace a fit check with your own child seat.
Try the intended child seat in the place where it will actually be installed, and check that the arrangement works for your family. A general statement that a car has LATCH anchors does not tell you how easy they are to access or whether your particular seat fits the seating position. Use LATCH ease-of-use information to compare candidates, then confirm the real-world fit in the vehicle.
Tire-pressure monitoring and headlights
Check that tire-pressure monitoring is present and understand how the warning works. Also examine headlight performance in IIHS results rather than assuming that all headlights are equally effective. Headlight evaluations are part of the broader safety comparison, alongside crashworthiness and crash avoidance.
Verify the exact car before you buy
A model name or advertised feature list is not enough. Ratings and equipment can differ by trim, build date, and changes made during a model year. For a used vehicle, add recall status and repair confirmation to the checks.
- Look up ratings and recalls. Use NHTSA’s vehicle ratings and comparison information for the exact model year and vehicle. Check recall status using the VIN, then ask the seller for documentation that recall repairs were completed.
- Compare scores within their limits. Compare NHTSA frontal and overall scores only when the vehicles are in the same class and within 250 pounds of curb weight. Review side and rollover ratings separately, as well as any safety-concern warning.
- Check IIHS results and the build date. Review crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and headlight results. Find the certification label near the driver’s door to identify the build date and confirm that the result applies to that vehicle.
- Confirm each feature on the exact trim. Check the vehicle’s equipment list and, where necessary, the owner’s manual. Ask the seller to demonstrate systems, but do not treat a demonstration as proof that every operating condition is covered.
- Check fit and operation. Test seat-belt fit for regular occupants and install the intended child seat if relevant. Learn how driver-assistance alerts and interventions work and what the manual says about their limits.
For a used car, do not treat a clean-looking dashboard or a seller’s assurance as recall documentation. Verify the VIN-based status and request repair records. A rating for a model line also does not prove that a particular used vehicle has every listed feature or that a recall repair was performed.

Keep the checks in a simple comparison sheet: model year, trim, build date, NHTSA category results, IIHS crashworthiness and avoidance results, headlights, included driver aids, occupant and child-seat fit, and VIN-based recall status. This makes it easier to spot when a seemingly similar listing is a different trim or a car built before a midyear change. If a seller cannot establish which equipment is on the car, verify it from the vehicle documentation or manual rather than assuming it is included.
Understand what changing ratings mean
On November 18, 2024, NHTSA announced finalized changes to its 5-Star Safety Ratings program. The announced additions include pedestrian AEB, lane-keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, blind-spot intervention, and a pedestrian-protection crashworthiness program, along with strengthened testing for existing technologies such as AEB. These are changes to the rating program, not proof that a particular vehicle has each feature. Check the rating for the actual model year and verify trim equipment.
In the announcement, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the changes would help speed adoption of technologies intended to reduce crash frequency and severity while helping consumers make informed decisions. Read the dated NHTSA announcement for the program context; use the individual vehicle’s ratings and equipment list for a purchase decision.
Ratings programs change over time, so the date and model year matter. A program update can change what is evaluated without retroactively adding equipment to cars already on the road. For your shortlist, use the rating attached to the candidate’s actual model year and verify which systems are installed on that trim and build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the driver-assistance limits in view
Driver assistance is not autonomous driving. NHTSA describes these systems as providing momentary assistance and says the driver must remain fully engaged and attentive, steering, braking, and accelerating. A warning can be missed, and an intervention is limited to the conditions the system is designed to handle. Read the owner’s manual, learn how to recognize system status, and remain ready to drive at all times.
During a test drive or demonstration, learn how the system signals that it is active, how it alerts the driver, and how the driver can resume or override control. A seller demonstration can help you understand the controls, but it cannot show every condition in which the assistance may be limited. Consult the manual for those operating limits and keep your attention on driving rather than treating an aid as a substitute for steering, braking, or accelerating.
NHTSA’s 2017 consumer brochure states that “Human error plays a role in an estimated 94 percent of crashes.” That is the agency’s estimate as presented in a 2017 brochure, not a current independently verified crash rate. It helps explain why assistance may matter, but it does not change the driver’s responsibility or establish how much a particular system reduces risk.

Build a shortlist around the way you drive
Start with ratings and the core features, then use your circumstances to decide what else matters. A useful comparison should keep like-for-like results separate from personal fit.
- For frequent highway driving: verify forward collision warning and AEB, then consider lane departure warning or lane-keeping assistance and blind-spot warning.
- For city or pedestrian-heavy routes: check whether pedestrian AEB is included and review the applicable crash-avoidance results.
- For tight parking or frequent reversing: confirm the backup camera works and whether rear automatic braking is available; do not confuse the two.
- For family use: test seat-belt fit, child-seat installation, and access to LATCH anchors, and review LATCH ease-of-use information.
- For any used vehicle: verify ratings for its exact year and build date, confirm trim-specific equipment, and check recalls by VIN.
When two vehicles remain, compare them across crash protection, crash avoidance, headlights, occupant and child-seat fit, precise equipment, and recall status. A vehicle with more feature names is not automatically the safer choice if its test results, applicability, or fit are weaker.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which car safety ratings should I check before buying?
Check both NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings and IIHS results for the exact model year, make, and model. NHTSA covers frontal crash, side crash, and rollover resistance; IIHS considers crashworthiness and crash avoidance, including headlights. Review individual categories rather than relying only on an overall score, and confirm the rating applies to the candidate’s trim and build date.
Can I compare the overall NHTSA stars of any two cars?
No. NHTSA says frontal ratings and Overall Vehicle Scores should be compared only for vehicles in the same class and within 250 pounds of curb weight. NHTSA allows side and rollover ratings to be compared across classes, but those results still represent specific tests rather than every crash scenario.
Is forward collision warning the same as automatic emergency braking?
No. Forward collision warning alerts the driver to a possible forward crash but does not brake. AEB can apply the brakes when a collision is imminent, potentially avoiding or reducing the severity of a crash. Confirm which features are actually fitted and consult the owner’s manual for their operating limits.
Does a backup camera mean a car has rear automatic braking?
No. A backup camera shows the area behind the vehicle; rear automatic braking can brake when a reverse collision is imminent. NHTSA says rearview video systems have been required on new vehicles since May 2018, but that requirement does not mean rear AEB is included.
What should I check when buying a used car?
Check ratings and equipment for the exact year, trim, and build date; identify the build date from the certification label near the driver’s door. Check recalls using the VIN and ask for documentation that repairs were completed. Also verify the installed safety features, test seat-belt fit, and try the intended child seat if relevant.

No. NHTSA describes driver-assistance systems as providing momentary assistance. The driver must remain fully engaged and attentive and be ready to steer, brake, and accelerate. Read the owner’s manual to understand system status and limitations.
The Bottom Line
Compare the exact car’s NHTSA and IIHS results, prioritizing crash protection, crash avoidance, and headlights. Then verify trim and build-date equipment, check occupant and child-seat fit, and confirm VIN-based recall repairs for used cars. Driver-assistance systems can help, but the driver remains responsible.
