What tech is Rivian bringing to the next electric VW Golf? Volkswagen and Rivian are developing software and electrical architecture for future vehicles through their joint venture, RV Tech. Volkswagen says its next-generation electric Golf is planned for the Group’s SSP platform, but it has not confirmed that the Golf will use RV Tech’s architecture, named its exact software features, or announced a launch date.
Will the next VW Golf be electric?
Volkswagen Passenger Cars has said it aims to build the next-generation electric Golf at Wolfsburg on the Group’s Scalable Systems Platform, or SSP. That is a stated production ambition, not a confirmed release schedule. The company has not published the Golf’s final specifications or retail date. Volkswagen’s September 2024 announcement describes the plan.
SSP is Volkswagen’s planned next-generation vehicle platform. The Golf plan and RV Tech’s software work are related parts of Volkswagen’s future EV program, but the official announcements reviewed do not say that the Golf will be the first Volkswagen to use RV Tech’s architecture—or identify which RV Tech features the Golf will receive.
What does Rivian’s software architecture do?
Volkswagen Group and Rivian launched RV Tech in November 2024 to develop electrical architecture and software for future vehicles from both companies. The work includes a zonal electronic architecture and functional software for software-defined vehicles (SDVs). In a zonal design, vehicle electronics are organized around zones rather than relying only on separate, distributed control units. The goal is a common architecture that can support vehicle functions through software.

Volkswagen’s November 2025 progress update said more than 1,500 employees from Rivian and Volkswagen Group Technologies were working on the effort. It described the first Group series model using a version of the architecture as scheduled for 2027, while SSP-based future models were expected toward the end of the decade. Those are Group-wide milestones, not a Golf launch date. Volkswagen Group’s one-year update also quotes CEO Oliver Blume: “The joint venture is rapidly developing the architecture for our future software-defined vehicles. Every step toward achieving our ambitious goals is being executed with determination and clear focus.”
What is known about timing?
Volkswagen’s announcements give useful context, but none establishes when the electric Golf will arrive:

- 2027: Volkswagen Group said a first series model using a version of RV Tech’s architecture was scheduled for that year. It did not identify that vehicle as the Golf. The joint venture’s original 2024 announcement had said first Volkswagen Group models could arrive as early as 2027. The original announcement and the 2025 update describe those Group-level plans.
- Beginning in 2027: Volkswagen announced an intended Qualcomm infotainment-chip rollout in its SDV architecture, starting with the ID.EVERY1 and then extending to other Volkswagen EVs on SSP. This is not a Golf-specific announcement. Volkswagen’s January 2026 letter-of-intent announcement describes the planned rollout.
- Toward the end of the decade: Volkswagen’s 2025 update placed SSP-based future models in this broader timeframe; it did not give the electric Golf a specific date.
In March 2026, Volkswagen said RV Tech had completed winter testing of its production-intent zonal architecture. The company described the milestone as enabling further development for future Western Hemisphere EVs with over-the-air (OTA)-capable functions. It does not establish that a Golf will launch with any particular OTA feature. Volkswagen’s winter-testing announcement gives the scope of that claim.

Volkswagen has not announced the next electric Golf’s range, battery capacity, charging speed, performance, dimensions, price, or confirmed retail date in the cited material. Nor has it provided a model-specific list of RV Tech software or infotainment features. Until Volkswagen makes a Golf-specific announcement, treat OTA capability and the Qualcomm infotainment plan as directions for future vehicles—not confirmed Golf specifications.

When Volkswagen releases more detail, the useful points to check will be the Golf’s platform and software architecture, its rollout timing, which functions can be updated over the air, what infotainment hardware it uses, and whether announced features are standard or optional.
