For the conventional 12-volt jump-start procedure described in Hyundai’s 2025 U.S. owner’s manual, disconnect the clamps in the exact reverse order you connected them: 1) black clamp from the disabled car’s chassis ground, 2) black clamp from the assisting car’s negative terminal or specified ground, 3) red clamp from the assisting car’s positive terminal, and 4) red clamp from the disabled car’s positive terminal. The exact connection points can vary by vehicle, so follow the owner’s manual for both cars and the jump starter manual, if you are using one.
Jumper cable removal order
- Remove the black clamp from the disabled vehicle’s chassis ground.
- Remove the black clamp from the assisting vehicle’s negative terminal or the specified ground point.
- Remove the red clamp from the assisting vehicle’s positive terminal.
- Remove the red clamp from the disabled vehicle’s positive terminal.
This is Hyundai’s four-step 2025 U.S. procedure, which says to disconnect the cables in the exact reverse order used to connect them. Other manufacturers likewise direct drivers to reverse the connection order; Volvo summarizes its sequence as removing black cables before red cables. Hyundai owner’s manual; Volvo Cars Support.
Before you remove the clamps
- Keep each clamp from touching another clamp or unintended metal while you disconnect it.
- Use the connection points specified in the vehicle manuals. In the cited Hyundai and Kia procedures, the final negative lead connects to a designated ground point rather than the discharged battery’s negative terminal. Kia owner’s manual.
- Hyundai specifies a 12-volt power supply for its procedure. Do not assume that a different voltage or an unapproved jump-start method is suitable for your vehicle.
- Kia warns not to jump-start a frozen discharged battery. Follow your vehicle’s instructions if the battery is damaged, frozen, or otherwise unsafe to handle.
If the vehicle still will not start
Hyundai advises seeking qualified assistance if the vehicle does not start after a few attempts. Repeating the same jump-start attempts may not resolve the underlying problem; contact qualified help if the manual’s procedure does not work or you cannot safely perform it. Hyundai owner’s manual.
