Mazda has shown the Iconic SP as a concept with a two-rotor rotary-electric powertrain, but it has not confirmed that the car—or its specifications—will reach production. In Mazda’s description, the rotary engine generates electricity; the announcement does not say it mechanically drives the wheels.
What engine does the Mazda Iconic SP have?
Mazda introduced the MAZDA ICONIC SP at Japan Mobility Show 2023 as a compact sports-car concept. The company describes its powertrain as a “two-rotor rotary EV system”: a rotary engine generates electricity for the vehicle’s electric drive. Mazda has not identified the engine’s displacement or supplied enough detail to establish its final hardware. Mazda’s October 25, 2023 announcement is the primary description.
Mazda says the concept’s compact, lightweight rotary engine is mounted centrally, a packaging choice it associates with a low hood and low center of gravity. The company also describes around 50:50 weight distribution. These are concept claims, not results from an independently reported vehicle test.
Is the Iconic SP a hybrid or an EV?
The clearest description is a rotary-electric concept: Mazda says the rotary engine generates electricity, while its announcement does not describe the engine as directly driving the wheels. Mazda has not published a complete production-level powertrain specification clarifying every component or operating mode, so it is safer not to label the concept more narrowly than the company’s own terminology allows.

Mazda’s March 2025 corporate briefing lists an electric drive range of 200 km for the concept. The excerpt does not name a test cycle, and the figure is not a confirmed consumer-vehicle range estimate. The briefing also continues to identify the Iconic SP as a concept. Does its rotary engine drive the wheels?
Mazda says the Iconic SP rotary generates electricity; the materials cited here do not say it directly turns the wheels. That distinction matters: an engine-generator arrangement can power electric motors without using the engine as a mechanical drive source. Mazda has not published enough Iconic SP hardware detail to infer a specific motor layout or all operating modes.

What has Mazda specified for the Iconic SP?
Mazda’s October 2023 concept specification lists 370 PS maximum output and a weight of 1,450 kg. Its March 2025 briefing repeats those figures and adds a 200 km electric drive range, without naming a test cycle in the available briefing excerpt. Treat the figures as Mazda’s concept specifications, not finalized production commitments.

Mazda also says the system can use various fuels, including hydrogen, and describes carbon-neutral fuel and renewable electricity as possible inputs toward a virtually carbon-neutral driving state. Those are statements about the concept’s potential energy sources, not independently verified lifecycle-emissions findings. Mazda says the concept could supply power for outdoor leisure or during a disaster; those are intended capabilities, not independently demonstrated results.

How does it differ from the rotary system in the MX-30?
Mazda already sells a rotary-generator vehicle: the MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV. Mazda says it is motor-powered throughout its driving range, with the rotary engine generating additional electricity. The 8C rotary used for that production system is a single-rotor, 830 cc engine. Mazda’s technical review lists direct injection, an 11.9:1 compression ratio, a regular-gasoline fuel specification, and maximum output of 53 kW at 4,500 rpm.

Mazda began mass production of the European MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV in June 2023. That production experience shows Mazda has brought a rotary-generator powertrain to market, but it does not establish that the Iconic SP uses two 8C engines or shares the 8C’s design. Will Mazda put the Iconic SP into production?
The Mazda materials cited here do not confirm a production decision, launch timetable, or finalized consumer-vehicle specifications. Mazda’s March 2025 briefing still calls it a concept. The company’s concept figures therefore should not be treated as a promise of what a production car would deliver.
