The W140 S-Class stands out because Mercedes-Benz made comfort and isolation central to its flagship, then used the generation to introduce major milestones—including the marque’s first production passenger-car V12 and a succession of electronic safety and convenience systems. Produced from 1991 to 1998, it was an ambitious 1990s luxury sedan, though equipment varied by model, year and market.
What was the W140 S-Class?
Mercedes-Benz identifies the generation as the 140 model series, produced from 1991 through 1998. “W140” is the familiar enthusiast shorthand for its saloon family. The company’s official history frames the series around generous interior room, maximum comfort and an elaborate chassis—not just a larger engine or a list of luxury appointments. How did it make comfort tangible?
Quiet and aerodynamic design
Mercedes-Benz gives the W140 a drag coefficient of Cd 0.31 and notes its double-glazed side windows. The low drag figure was a significant part of the car’s engineering, while the glazing was intended to insulate the cabin from noise and reduce condensation. These details show how the car’s imposing scale was paired with attention to the experience inside it. Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom USA’s 2020 chronology Mercedes-Benz Classic’s W140 history
Power assistance for large closures
Power-closing doors and trunk lid addressed a practical consequence of the car’s size: handling heavy closures. Mercedes-Benz lists this equipment as optional, not standard across the range. It was luxury expressed as reduced effort in ordinary use, rather than an entirely new driving function. Mercedes-Benz Media Newsroom USA’s 2020 chronology

Why was the 600 SE and 600 SEL V12 important?
At the W140’s 1991 launch, the 600 SE and 600 SEL became the first Mercedes-Benz production passenger cars powered by a twelve-cylinder engine. Mercedes-Benz also describes that engine as the most powerful car engine in the brand’s range at the time. The significance is specific: this was a first for Mercedes-Benz production passenger cars, not the first V12 ever made. How did its technology arrive over time?
The W140’s innovations were introduced across the generation; they should not be read as a checklist fitted to every car. Mercedes-Benz’s US timeline records these milestones and availability notes:
| Year | System or feature | Availability stated in Mercedes-Benz’s timeline |
|---|---|---|
| 1995 | Electronic Stability Program (ESP) | Standard on S 600; optional on S 420 and S 500 in the US timeline. |
| 1995 | PARKTRONIC parking assistance | Listed for the S 600 or as an option. |
| 1995 | APS navigation | Offered as an option. |
| 1996 | Brake Assist System (BAS) | Introduced in 1996; the cited timeline does not specify fitment across every model. |
| 1996 | LINGUATRONIC voice control | Optional. |
| 1996 | Xenon headlamps | Introduced in 1996; the cited timeline does not specify fitment across every model. |
Dates and fitment here reflect Mercedes-Benz’s US history; equipment could differ by market and model year. PARKTRONIC is especially easy to understand in context: parking assistance addressed the practical challenge of maneuvering a very large sedan. Its special character comes from the combination: a spacious, carefully isolated cabin; engineering attention to comfort and daily handling; a landmark V12 at the top of the range; and safety and convenience features that appeared progressively. The W140 is best understood as a generation with meaningful differences between versions—not as one specification shared by every S-Class bearing the badge.
