The Nordschleife’s reputation rests on three things: its length and terrain, the fact that tourist drives run under public road-traffic rules rather than as a closed race, and a history of serious incidents. The Nürburgring publishes the loop at 20.8 km with 73 corners and a 300-metre elevation difference. Those features plausibly raise the demands on anticipation, route memory and hazard response. The official sources do not show how often incidents happen, so the reputation can be explained but not ranked against public roads or other circuits.
“Nürburgring” can refer to the wider motorsport complex, including the Grand Prix circuit. This article covers the 20.8 km Nordschleife, the long northern loop used for tourist drives and historic racing.
The scale of the circuit
The Nürburgring’s own Nordschleife page gives the following figures. They are the operator’s published values, not independent measurements.
- Length: 20.8 km
- Corners: 73
- Elevation difference: 300 metres
- Steepest uphill gradient: up to 18 percent at Hohe Acht
- Steepest downhill gradient: up to 11 percent at Fuchsröhre

Why length and terrain matter
A single lap of this length, with 73 corners and large changes in height, is harder to learn than a short circuit. A driver cannot rely on repeating a familiar sequence of braking points over and over, because the route keeps changing character. This is an inference from the published dimensions. The operator does not publish a measure of how difficult the route is to memorise.

Long stretches and sudden changes
Gradients of up to 18 percent uphill and 11 percent downhill mean that speed, braking load and traction change quickly as the road rises and falls. On a track with these gradients, a driver has to judge the surface and the car’s behaviour while also reading the road ahead. Again, this is a reasoned consequence of the published gradients rather than a measured finding.
Mixed use of the road
The Nordschleife is not a closed circuit during tourist days. Other drivers, varying vehicle types and different levels of experience share the same surface. The operator’s safety page describes the Nordschleife as “not a modern racetrack but rather the world’s most beautiful country road without oncoming traffic: So always avoid risks!” That wording is promotional, but it makes the operator’s own framing clear: the route is treated as a road, and drivers are expected to behave as they would on one.

Tourist drives run under road-traffic rules
The Nürburgring states that tourist rides take place on days when the circuit is not in use for events or testing. German road-traffic regulations apply unless the operator’s rules say otherwise. The driving regulations, status June 2026, set out the following conditions:
- Vehicles must keep right and overtake only on the left.
- Posted speed limits must be obeyed.
- Tourist laps may not be timed.
- Tourist rides are not intended for top-speed attempts. In the operator’s words: “The tourist rides do not serve the purpose of achieving top speeds as a matter of principle.”

Danger spots and the rules that apply there
The operator’s rules set a specific response for accidents and other danger spots. These rules apply to tourist rides only. They are not a general speed limit for the track.
- Follow signals from track-safety staff and light panels.
- Overtaking is prohibited near accidents and other danger spots.
- Pass these areas at an appropriate speed, with a maximum of 50 km/h.

- Stop safely as soon as the vehicle is no longer roadworthy, or immediately if it is leaking operating fluids. Do not keep driving.
- Alert track staff.
- Move the occupants behind the guardrails if this is possible.
- Report any contamination of the track. This requirement appears in the safety regulations.
- Expect a Nürburgring-authorised towing service to remove the vehicle. The rules specify this service, so the recovery is not left to the driver.

Historical context
The Nordschleife opened in 1927. The Nürburgring’s history page says that safety and track length were concerns in Formula 1, which raced there for years. Niki Lauda crashed on 1 August 1976 in the fast left-hand corner before Bergwerk. According to the same page, that incident marked the end of the Nordschleife as a Formula 1 venue. The operator’s Nordschleife page also attributes the nickname “Green Hell” to Formula 1 champion Jackie Stewart. The page does not give a verified full sentence from him, so the phrase should be treated as a widely used nickname rather than a confirmed quotation.
This history explains why the circuit carries its reputation. It does not measure how risky tourist drives are today.
What the evidence does not establish
- Accident rates. The Nürburgring’s official pages cited here do not publish an accident or casualty rate.
- Comparisons. No official figure supports ranking the Nordschleife as more or less dangerous than public roads or other circuits.
- Specific features. The official pages do not establish blind-corner counts, barrier positions or runoff details, so these should not be assumed.
- Access and eligibility. Access, vehicle eligibility, noise limits and schedules can change. The driving regulations are marked status June 2026.
Readers planning a visit should check the operator’s current rules before going, because the regulations are the authoritative source for conditions on any given day.
