The E30 began as a homologation special; later generations broadened the formula with a straight-six, a V8, turbocharging, new body styles and, most recently, all-wheel drive and a Touring wagon. Here’s what changed from one era to the next, using BMW’s published history and specifications.
How many BMW M3 generations are there?
BMW M’s current history groups the M3 into six generations: E30, E36, E46, E90/E92/E93, F80 and G80. The three codes in the fourth generation refer to sedan, coupe and convertible versions of the same era, not separate generations. BMW dates the G80’s start to 2020. The figures below are BMW-published ranges or variant-specific claims, not results from a single cross-generation test.

E30: a road car built around homologation
The first M3 was not simply a more powerful 3 Series. BMW developed it as a road-going touring-car racer, with the Group A rules described by BMW requiring at least 5,000 road-legal examples within twelve months for homologation. The production car received a high-revving four-cylinder, racing-oriented suspension and brakes, and distinctive bodywork; BMW says only a small number of body components carried over from the standard car.

BMW M’s current overview gives E30 production as 16,949 cars. A separate BMW Group release from 2014 gives 17,970 examples for a total explicitly including convertible variants, evolution stages and special editions. Those totals reflect different stated scopes, so they should not be treated as directly interchangeable counts.

E36: the M3 grows into a more usable road car
The E36 replaced the E30’s four-cylinder with an inline-six, the first straight-six in an M3. It also brought a sedan into the range for the first time. Its more understated design and broader everyday role marked a shift away from the first car’s primary homologation purpose, without abandoning the performance brief.

BMW lists 286–321 hp and 320–350 Nm for E36 versions. Those ranges reflect different models, rather than one specification shared by every car.

E46: the high-revving six-cylinder at its peak
The E46 kept the inline-six and made its high-revving character a defining part of the M3’s identity. BMW describes the engine concept as reaching 8,000 rpm and lists 343–360 hp across versions. The standout special edition was the CSL, which became closely associated with this generation.
BMW reports 85,139 E46 M3s produced and described the model as the biggest-selling M model at the time of its overview. That is a historical claim tied to the publication, not a current all-time sales record.

E90, E92 and E93: the M3’s one V8 generation
The fourth-generation M3 is the only one with a V8. BMW’s S65 was a high-revving engine, with BMW’s history describing an 8,300-rpm limit. The generation included a sedan (E90), coupe (E92) and convertible (E93), so the three codes identify body styles within one era.
BMW lists 309 kW (420 hp) for the baseline generation; special versions had higher outputs. The E92 coupe also introduced a standard carbon-fibre roof. BMW’s overview reports that 67 M3 CRT cars were produced.

With the F80, BMW returned to a six-cylinder but added turbocharging. The M3 name became sedan-only: coupe and convertible derivatives moved into the new M4 line. Lightweight construction was part of the generation’s engineering story, including a carbon-fibre roof and prop shaft.
BMW lists 431 hp for the F80 base version, with higher outputs for Competition and CS versions. Those figures should be matched to the specific trim rather than applied to every F80.

In a 2014 BMW Group release, then BMW M president Dr. Friedrich Nitschke called the first four generations a blend of “motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability.” That is BMW’s own characterization of the M3 formula, not an independent assessment.

G80: more performance levels, all-wheel drive and a Touring
The G80 expands the M3 range beyond a single performance setup. BMW’s current overview describes three performance levels and a 480–550 hp range across the models covered there; exact specifications and availability depend on variant and market. M xDrive all-wheel drive became available on an M3 for the first time, and the generation introduced an M3 Touring body style for the first time.
BMW says an M3 Competition with M xDrive accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds; its limited M3 CS is listed at 3.4 seconds. These are manufacturer figures for those named variants, not a blanket claim for every G80.

What makes each M3 generation distinct?
- E30: homologation purpose and a four-cylinder foundation.
- E36: the first M3 straight-six and the first sedan.
- E46: a high-revving straight-six and the CSL special edition.
- E90/E92/E93: the sole V8 generation, offered in three body styles.
- F80: turbocharging and the M3/M4 name split.
- G80: a wider performance range, available M xDrive and the first Touring.
That progression explains why a single “best M3” verdict depends on what matters to the buyer or enthusiast: the E30’s homologation story, the six-cylinder eras, the V8’s distinct place in the lineage, or the later generations’ broader body-style and drivetrain choices.
