For a conventional electromagnetic clutch, check voltage at the connected clutch coil with the A/C commanded on and engine running, then compare it with battery or charging voltage under the conditions in the vehicle’s service procedure. Published procedures differ: a 2003 Jeep Liberty test specifies within 0.2 V of battery voltage, while UAC’s general diagnostic guidance says within 1 V of charging voltage. Those are application-specific references, not universal targets.
How to check clutch-coil voltage
- Find the matching service procedure. Use the vehicle’s year, make, model, engine, and compressor application. Confirm the required test conditions and measurement points before testing.
- Set up the operating test. UAC’s guidance calls for the engine running and A/C set to maximum. The 2003 Jeep Liberty procedure specifies a fully charged battery, normal idle, and A/C selected. Follow the conditions for your vehicle.
- Measure with the coil connected. With the clutch commanded on, measure across the clutch-coil connector terminals while the coil remains connected, as prescribed by the vehicle procedure. An unloaded reading at a disconnected connector may not show whether the circuit can supply the coil under load.
- Compare readings taken at the same time. Compare coil voltage with battery or charging voltage under the same operating conditions, using the tolerance specified for that application.
For example, the reproduced 2003 Jeep Liberty service procedure calls for coil voltage within 0.2 V of battery voltage. UAC’s clutch-coil diagnostic tech tip says the measurement should be within 1 V of charging voltage. The different tolerances are why neither figure should be applied to every vehicle.

What a low or zero reading can mean
Voltage is lower than the application’s specification
A low loaded reading can point to excessive resistance in the feed or ground path. Use the vehicle wiring diagram and the specified voltage-drop tests to locate the loss rather than assuming the coil is bad. UAC’s procedure sets a positive-feed voltage-drop threshold of 1.0 V or less; a higher drop indicates excessive circuit resistance under that procedure.

No voltage does not, by itself, prove the clutch coil has failed. The coil may not be receiving a command, or there may be a fault in the supply or control circuit. In its diagnostic path, the Jeep procedure checks items including fuses, A/C controls, the clutch relay, pressure switches, and the PCM where applicable. Follow the diagnostic sequence for your vehicle before condemning the coil.

Resistance and current figures are application-specific
Use an ohmmeter only after isolating and disconnecting the coil as directed by the vehicle service manual. Coil resistance and current are not universal pass/fail values.

The figures come from the 2003 Jeep Liberty procedure and the 2005 PT Cruiser service manual supplement, respectively. Do not use them as substitutes for the specification matching your compressor.

What you need for a useful diagnosis
A digital multimeter can measure voltage and, with the circuit safely isolated, resistance. The tool alone cannot identify the correct tolerance or test points: use the vehicle-specific service procedure and wiring diagram, and take care around a running engine and moving belts.
