That explanation is an inference from Chevrolet’s published specifications and trim lineup—not a confirmed account of GM’s internal decision-making.
How the Trailblazer’s two engines compare
Both engines are turbocharged three-cylinders. Chevrolet rates the 1.3L 18 horsepower and 12 lb-ft of torque higher than the 1.2L. The figures below are for the 2026 U.S. lineup; confirm the equipment on a specific vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet.
| Engine | Published output | Lineup position | Drivetrain and transmission context |
|---|---|---|---|
| ECOTEC 1.2L turbo three-cylinder | 137 hp; 162 lb-ft | Standard engine | Chevrolet’s 2026 comparison lists the standard 1.2L with front-wheel drive (FWD). The cited current material does not establish every transmission pairing. |
| ECOTEC 1.3L turbo three-cylinder | 155 hp; 174 lb-ft | Available; included on ACTIV and RS | Check the specific model-year build for drivetrain and transmission. In 2024, Chevrolet paired the 1.3L FWD with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and the 1.3L AWD with a nine-speed automatic; that mapping should not be assumed for every 2026 vehicle. |
Chevrolet’s 2026 product information lists the engine outputs and identifies ACTIV and RS as equipped with the 1.3L. Chevrolet describes those trims as having the 1.3L turbo and dual exhausts for a “fun, responsive drive.” That is the automaker’s marketing description, not an independent performance finding. Why offer both engines?
The lineup supports a straightforward product-positioning explanation: the 1.2L serves as the standard engine, while the higher-output 1.3L is bundled into the ACTIV and RS, which Chevrolet positions around trail-ready and sporty character. That gives buyers a reason to consider an upper trim and lets the entry configuration use the lower-output powertrain.

Chevrolet’s materials do not say whether cost, manufacturing constraints, emissions strategy, customer research, or another internal factor drove the decision. Those explanations should not be treated as established facts.
What the extra output may mean on the road
The 1.3L’s higher published horsepower and torque may appeal to drivers who want more reserve for passing, hills, or carrying a full cabin. But the cited specifications do not quantify a real-world difference, and they do not include acceleration tests. A test drive in the exact configuration you are considering is more useful than assuming the displacement difference alone predicts how it will feel.

How to read the fuel-economy figures
Fuel economy depends on model year and drivetrain, so figures from different years or configurations are not a fair engine-to-engine comparison. Chevrolet’s 2026 comparison gives the standard 1.2L FWD an EPA-estimated 30 mpg city, 31 highway, and 30 combined. Chevrolet’s 2024 fact sheet lists the 1.3L at 29 city/33 highway mpg with FWD and 26 city/29 highway mpg with AWD. Those are not same-year, same-drivetrain comparisons, and the 2024 figures do not establish which engine is more efficient in an equivalent 2026 configuration. See Chevrolet’s comparison page and its 2024 Trailblazer fact sheet.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between Trailblazer configurations
- Start with the trim you want. ACTIV and RS include the 1.3L; the 1.2L is the standard engine.
- Compare complete configurations. Check the drivetrain, transmission, included equipment, and current build price rather than comparing engine size alone. Chevrolet’s published pages do not provide a stable price difference between otherwise equivalent engine configurations.
- Match fuel-economy figures carefully. Compare the same model year and drivetrain, and distinguish EPA estimates from results in your own driving.
- Drive the version you may buy. The published output gap is clear, but the cited sources do not quantify how much quicker or more capable one configuration feels in everyday use.
Chevrolet’s current lineup information applies to the 2026 U.S. Trailblazer. Engine, drivetrain, and transmission availability can change by model year and build, so verify the specific vehicle before relying on an older configuration’s specifications.
