KYBURZ described it in 2019 as its street-legal series model, and published figures then included 45 kW, 120 km/h and 183 km of range under the stated EU test procedure. Those are historical manufacturer specifications, not a promise about every eRod or its real-world range. Production status, new-car pricing and availability should be confirmed with KYBURZ.
What is the KYBURZ eRod?
The eRod is a minimalist, open-cockpit electric roadster designed for two. KYBURZ presented the eRod fun as the street-legal series version alongside an eRod race concept and an off-road concept. The company said the vehicle was developed with Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and manufactured in Switzerland. Its 2019 slogan, “Emotions instead of Emissions,” was company positioning, not a measured environmental comparison. KYBURZ’s 2019 announcement identifies the vehicle and its intended role.
The Swiss identity refers to its development and production by KYBURZ in Switzerland; it does not by itself determine how a particular car is classified or licensed where you live. Registration, road classification, driving-licence rules and insurance depend on the vehicle’s approval documents and local law.
How fast does the eRod go, and what is its range?
KYBURZ’s 2019 table for the eRod fun listed 45 kW (61 PS), 140 Nm, a 120 km/h top speed, a 19.2 kWh battery and a 600 kg weight. The company stated a range of 183 km under EU 134/2014. That is a period manufacturer figure tied to the cited procedure; it should not be read as a real-world range guarantee.

Why published eRod figures differ
KU Leuven reports different battery and range figures for its own instrumented research eRod: 21.9 kWh and 208 km under EU 134/2014. It also lists 45 kW, 140 Nm, 120 km/h and 600 kg. The page, last updated 11 December 2024, describes a self-assembled, road-legal kit car used as a research and validation platform—not a specification sheet for every customer vehicle. KU Leuven’s eRod vehicle page provides that research-vehicle context. The two sources do not establish why the capacity and range differ, so confirm the exact year, configuration and approval documents for any car under consideration.
A Blick road test gives a separate period test framing: approximately 100–130 km as “Werk” range and 136 km in its test, with consumption listed as 15 and 13 kWh per 100 km respectively. These are figures reported in that road test, not a current controlled test. The review says the eRod feels especially suited to winding roads and less at home on the highway, where its minimal open body is exposed. Blick’s road test is useful context, but its results should not be merged with the manufacturer’s cycle figure.

Could you buy one as a kit or a completed car?
In its 2019 announcement, KYBURZ described two formats: a completed factory-built vehicle and a self-build kit. Kit buyers could take part in a one-week guided, hands-on workshop at the company’s Embrach facility. The manufacturer’s period prices, inclusive of VAT, were CHF 42,500 for factory-built and CHF 39,500 for self-build. These are historical 2019 prices, not current offers. The original KYBURZ release describes the formats and workshop.
The same release listed fast-charging systems rated at 6.6, 13.2 or 19.8 kW and said charging could take as little as one hour. Those are KYBURZ’s 2019 claims about then-available systems; confirm charger compatibility, included equipment and charging time for a specific vehicle before relying on them.

Where can you buy a used KYBURZ eRod?
KYBURZ’s 2025 demonstrator list displayed five used or demonstration vehicles. Listed post-promotion prices ranged from CHF 22,900 to CHF 29,900, inclusive of VAT. The document said used vehicles carried a one-year warranty, that availability and prices could change, and that test drives could be arranged. It is a dated inventory snapshot, not evidence that any listed car remains for sale. Contact KYBURZ directly to check current stock and terms. KYBURZ’s demonstrator listing is the relevant starting point.
For any used example, ask for its exact configuration and approval documents, service and accident history, battery and charging equipment details, condition and mileage, warranty terms, and evidence that it can be registered in your jurisdiction. These are buyer checks, not details established for the cars in the dated listing.

Is the KYBURZ eRod road legal?
KYBURZ called the eRod fun street-legal and described its Swiss classification in 2019 as a small motor vehicle analogous to a quad. That historical description does not settle road legality or licensing for every vehicle and jurisdiction. Before buying or driving one, verify the individual vehicle’s type-approval or registration documents with the relevant local authority, and confirm the applicable licence, insurance and road-use requirements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is open-cockpit ownership like?
An open cockpit makes weather exposure and eye protection practical considerations. In its road-test material, Blick advised: “Achtung: Schutzbrille anziehen!” (“Warning: wear protective glasses!”). That is reviewer advice, not an identified manufacturer requirement or a statement about legal rules. Protective riding eyewear is a sensible item to investigate, but no particular product or brand is established as KYBURZ-approved.

KYBURZ’s 2019 options list included a Speedster disc screen, side panels, bucket seats, cup tyres, waterproof luggage and a luggage rack, and carbon wheel guards. These suggest ways owners could tailor weather protection, carrying capacity and setup, but present availability and fitment by vehicle year have not been established. Ask KYBURZ or a knowledgeable seller to confirm compatibility before purchase. The company’s period options list documents what it offered at that time.
Quick Recap
What to verify before committing
- Current availability and price: confirm whether new vehicles, demonstrators or used cars are actually available; the published manufacturer prices and demonstrator list are from 2019 and 2025 respectively.
- Exact vehicle specification: match the car’s year, configuration, battery, charger and approval papers to its own documentation rather than assuming a single eRod specification.
- Road use: confirm registration, classification, licence and insurance rules with the relevant authority where the car will be driven.
- Build choice: if considering a kit, ask whether guided workshop support is currently offered and what assembly, equipment and registration requirements apply; the documented one-week workshop was described in 2019.
- Accessories and support: verify current stock, fitment and parts support directly. KYBURZ’s web shop page displayed branded merchandise, but that does not establish a current replacement-parts catalogue. KYBURZ’s shop can be checked for current listings.
