The Halbrad is a compact two-wheel bicycle concept developed in Berlin by Felix Kruschardt and reported in 2016. Its defining idea was to arrange a bicycle’s wheels, pedals and handlebars around a reengineered rear triangle, aiming to create a more portable vehicle for short urban trips. Whether it is manufactured or available to buy today is unconfirmed.
What is the Halbrad?
New Atlas described the Halbrad on April 11, 2016 as a German-designed bicycle concept for last-mile travel. Rather than using a conventional full bicycle frame, it gathered the wheels, pedals and handlebars around a reengineered rear triangle. The design was presented as suitable for streets and light off-road riding, with easier carrying and storage as intended benefits—not independently measured results. Who developed it, and was it sold?
Thai PBS reported on June 6, 2016 that Berlin-based Felix Kruschardt developed the two-wheel half-bicycle. At that time, it had not yet been produced for sale, although a market launch was planned. That is a historical status update, not evidence of what happened afterward. Thai PBS’s report does not establish current production or ordering.
A currently indexed XING profile associates Kruschardt with “halbrad – vorne weg, aber richtig” and describes a 99 cm-tall, 79 cm-long, 9.9 kg urban bicycle with a steel frame, two independent brakes and a two-speed transmission. Because this is a profile rather than an authoritative current catalog, those details do not confirm that the 2016 concept is now available in that configuration. No verified current seller, parts channel or support information is established.

Is the Halbrad the same as a Halfbike?
No. The names are easy to confuse, but they refer to different designs. The Halbrad in the 2016 reports is a two-wheel bicycle concept associated with Kruschardt. The currently marketed Halfbike is a separate standing tricycle with two rear wheels, a folding design and lean-to-steer handling. Its shop, accessories and instructions are specific to that product and do not establish Halbrad availability or compatibility. What is known—and not known—about its practicality?
The Halbrad was pitched for urban last-mile trips and easier carrying and storage. The available reports do not provide verified performance tests, adoption or sales figures, range, speed, or a documented comparison against a standard bicycle. The XING profile’s dimensions and weight should not be treated as confirmed specifications for an orderable model. Without an established current product listing, there is also no verified basis for recommending Halbrad-specific parts or accessories.

What to consider before riding an unfamiliar compact cycle
No Halbrad-specific manual or equipment test is established. As a general precaution—not manufacturer guidance for the Halbrad—wear a bicycle helmet and learn an unfamiliar balance-dependent cycle in an open, flat area with smooth pavement. The manual for the separate Halfbike also advises avoiding slippery or icy surfaces, steep descents, rough pavement, busy roads and low-visibility riding, and using front and rear lights at night. Those instructions apply to that Halfbike, not specifically to the Halbrad. The Halfbike manual sets out its own safety guidance.
