In a car’s wiring diagram, it tells you that a fuse is part of the circuit, but the symbol alone does not identify the physical fuse or tell you which replacement to use. Check the diagram’s legend, annotations, bill of materials, and vehicle documentation for those details.
What the fuse symbol means
The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 60617 database standardizes graphical symbols used in electrotechnical diagrams. Its 2019-03-05 database snapshot lists “Fuse, general symbol” as entry S00362 and gives circuit, connection, function, and overview diagrams as application contexts. An ABB diagram-symbol legend also labels a fuse’s general symbol.
IEC Technical Committee 3 describes IEC 60617 this way: “The SDB IEC 60617 is the only IEC standard for graphical symbols for diagrams and is managed by TC 3.” The current IEC 60617:2026 DB publication page, dated 2026-03-04, describes a database containing more than 1,500 graphical symbols; that is the database’s total count, not the number of fuse symbols.
Diagram styles can vary. If a mark does not look familiar, check the drawing’s legend and stated drafting standard rather than assuming that every stylized fuse mark has the same meaning.

What the symbol does not tell you
A general fuse symbol identifies the component’s function, not its exact physical specification. On its own, it does not establish the fuse’s dimensions, current or voltage rating, breaking capacity, or time-current behavior. In a vehicle diagram, use the relevant annotations, bill of materials, device label, service manual, or other vehicle documentation to identify the required fuse.
Do not choose a replacement based only on how the symbol looks. A miniature cartridge fuse and a fuse intended for a low-voltage electrical installation belong to different categories. IEC 60127-1:2023 covers miniature fuse links, including cartridge links, for appliances and electronic equipment normally intended for indoor use; it excludes fuses for low-voltage electrical installations, for which IEC identifies the IEC 60269 series. The standard’s replacement guidance calls for similar dimensions and characteristics.

How to use a fuse symbol in a car diagram
- Find the drawing legend. Confirm how that diagram defines its symbols and, if stated, which drafting standard it follows.
- Trace the circuit reference. Read any fuse designator, annotation, or bill-of-materials reference associated with the symbol. Do not treat the general icon as a complete fuse specification.
- Check vehicle documentation. Use the relevant manual or service documentation to confirm the fuse location and required specifications for the vehicle and circuit in question.
- Match the documented replacement. Verify the specified physical dimensions and electrical characteristics before fitting a replacement. If the documentation does not establish what is required, do not guess from the symbol.
When two diagrams show different fuse marks
There is no authoritative regional comparison established here for fuse-symbol variants. When two drawings differ, compare their legends and declared drafting standards first, then check the fuse designators, annotations, and bill-of-materials references. A drawing’s own legend is the practical guide to interpreting that drawing.
