Tesla Sentry Mode monitors a parked, locked vehicle using equipped cameras and sensors. If it detects a possible security event, it may flash the headlights, sound the alarm, show a camera-recording notice, send an alert to the Tesla app, and save footage—if the vehicle has recording storage configured. Alerts and recordings are separate: an alert may still arrive without a drive, but camera footage will not be available in that setup. Sentry Mode is an added layer of monitoring, not a guarantee against theft or damage.
How Tesla Sentry Mode works
When Sentry Mode is enabled and the vehicle is locked and in Park, equipped cameras and sensors remain powered and ready. Tesla describes the system as detecting possible threats and responding according to the event; not every detection triggers every response. The Model 3 manual says footage may be recorded even when the system does not judge an event to be a clear threat, without an alarm or app notification. Tesla Model 3 Owner’s Manual
- Possible responses: pulsing headlights, an audible alarm, a camera notice on the touchscreen, a Tesla app alert, and saving event footage.
- Camera-Based Detection: In the cited Model 3 manual, enabling this setting lets Sentry Mode use exterior cameras as well as vehicle sensors to detect a security event while parked. With it off, that manual says clips are saved only when the vehicle detects a physical threat.
- What it cannot do: Tesla cautions, “Do not rely on Sentry Mode to protect Model 3 from all possible security threats.” Impacts may not be detected, and an alarm may not activate in every situation.
Camera availability, settings, and responses depend on the vehicle and software. Consult the owner’s manual for the specific Tesla rather than assuming every model uses identical controls.
How to turn Sentry Mode on and set exclusions
Tesla’s Model 3 manual documents activation through the touchscreen, voice commands, or the Tesla mobile app. The documented touchscreen flow requires Dashcam to be enabled for USB event recording. Tesla Support also describes activation through the app and voice commands. Exact menu labels and paths can vary by vehicle and software version. Tesla vehicle safety and security features

- Redefine everyday file transfers with speeds up to 400MB/s
- Reliable and secure storage for your photos, videos, music, and files

- Safeguard your data (Water proof, shock proof, magnet proof, temperature proof, x ray proof)
- USB 3.1 flash drive with backwards compatibility (USB 3.0, USB 2.0)
The cited Model 3 manual allows automatic activation to be excluded at saved Home, Work, and Favorite locations. It says the vehicle recognizes these locations when parked within about 500 meters. Manually changing Sentry Mode overrides those exclusions until the next drive. These details describe that manual’s Model 3 setup and are not guaranteed to apply identically to every Tesla.
Does Sentry Mode record without a USB drive?
On configurations that require a USB drive, Sentry Mode may still send an app alert about a detected security event without one, but it will not provide camera recordings. Tesla Support also describes newer model-year vehicles with a specified software version saving recordings to onboard memory for touchscreen viewing. Storage arrangements therefore vary by vehicle configuration and software; check the manual for the car’s recording method.

USB requirements in the cited Model 3 manual
For the Model 3 USB recording setup described in the cited manual, Tesla specifies a drive with at least 64 GB capacity, sustained write speed of at least 4 MB/s, and USB 2.0 compatibility. The manual’s in-car formatting tool creates an exFAT drive and a TeslaCam folder. It also lists exFAT, MS-DOS FAT, ext3, and ext4 as manual formatting options, and says NTFS is unsupported. These are Model 3 manual requirements, not universal specifications for every Tesla.
Some newer vehicles’ center-console USB-C ports do not support formatting, saving, or viewing video. Where equipped, a supported front port such as the glovebox USB-A port may be needed. Formatting erases existing contents, so back up the drive first and confirm the correct port and format for the vehicle.

- Compact plug-and-stay design to instantly add storage to your laptop, game console, in-car audio, and more
- Save time with ultra-fast transfer speeds up to 400MB/s (Based on read speed. 1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB 3.0 port required.)
- Transfer a full-length movie to the drive in less than 30 seconds (Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 host device.)
- Get space for your high-resolution photos, videos, and more at a great value with up to 512GB of storage (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Password-protect files using a downloadable software (Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 10+ and macOS v10.9+ (Software download required, see Password Protection page on SanDisk site).)
How to save and view Sentry clips
Dashcam and Sentry footage cycles through storage: unsaved footage can be overwritten, and older Sentry clips may be deleted when space is limited. In the cited Model 3 manual, the TeslaCam folder may include RecentClips, SavedClips, SentryClips, and EncryptedClips. Copy important footage to another device promptly, then clear the drive if you need space. Depending on the vehicle and software, clips can be viewed on the touchscreen, a computer, or through supported app features.
The cited Model 3 manual says encrypted Dashcam clips cannot be played directly on a computer. Its described workflow uses the recording vehicle or Tesla’s browser-based decryption page, where decryption happens locally. The manual also says Dashcam clips are not sent to Tesla; that statement applies to the described Dashcam workflow and should not be generalized to all vehicle data.

Live Camera, privacy, and local rules
Live Camera is a separate remote-viewing feature, not the same as an event recording. The cited Model 3 manual says it requires Premium Connectivity and a paired phone with a supported Tesla app. While someone is viewing the cameras, the vehicle displays visible indicators. That manual sets a daily cumulative use limit and says no audio is captured; Tesla says the Live Camera feed is encrypted and cannot be accessed by Tesla. Requirements and limits can change, so check the current manual and app for the vehicle.
Tesla says owners are responsible for following local rules and property restrictions on camera use. Consider this when parking in shared residential areas, workplaces, and other spaces where recording may be restricted. The cited Tesla guidance does not summarize laws for individual jurisdictions.

Yes. Tesla says Sentry Mode may increase power consumption, and the cited Model 3 manual says it is unavailable in Low Power Mode. Tesla Support says Sentry Mode remains active until the vehicle is at or below 20% battery, except at a Supercharger, and that the app notifies the owner if low battery disables it. These conditions are specific to the cited manual and support guidance; check the current manual for the vehicle’s behavior.
