Engine blow-by is combustion gas that slips past the piston rings into the crankcase. A small amount is normal while an engine runs; it becomes a concern when the engine produces more gas than its design can manage or the crankcase ventilation system cannot remove it. Excessive crankcase pressure can contribute to oil leaks, but vapor or an oil leak alone does not identify the cause.
What is engine blow-by?
During combustion, high pressure pushes some gas past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This flow is called blow-by. The EPA’s PCV training material describes the same process: combustion-chamber gases pass the rings during high-pressure portions of engine operation (EPA PCV training material).
The piston rings help seal the space between each piston and cylinder wall, but a running engine is not perfectly sealed. Blow-by therefore occurs to some extent in normal operation. The relevant question is whether the amount is within the capacity of that particular engine’s ventilation system—not whether any gas is present at all.
How does the PCV system manage blow-by?
The positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system routes crankcase gases back into the engine’s induction system, where they are drawn in and burned. In Hyundai’s 2026 owner-manual description, fresh filtered air enters the crankcase, mixes with blow-by gases, and the mixture passes through the PCV valve into the induction system (2026 Hyundai Elantra owner’s manual). Kia describes the same basic route in its owner’s manual (Kia owner’s manuals).

- Oil Catch Can with or without Breather Filter: Install the oil catch can with breather filter for pre-PCV cars as a vent system or without breather filter in line between PCV hoses as a seal can.
Because this system manages gases produced during normal operation, a ventilation fault can create crankcase-pressure symptoms even when the underlying issue is not worn piston rings. The design and components vary by engine, so a PCV valve is only one part of a vehicle-specific ventilation path.
What causes excessive blow-by?
Excessive flow can indicate that combustion gases are passing the rings and cylinder walls in greater amounts than the engine can handle. SAE’s report on power-cylinder blow-by mechanisms focuses on that subsystem and does not establish a universal threshold for every engine (SAE J2797).

Ventilation faults can also prevent crankcase gases from being managed properly. On turbocharged vehicles, turbocharger-related faults may contribute to crankcase-pressure symptoms. A John Deere service procedure for specified 4.5L and 6.8L diesel engines says excessive flow from the crankcase breather can indicate turbocharger seal issues or piston rings and cylinder liners that do not seal adequately. That procedure is specific to those engines and describes a comparative check that requires experience; it is not a universal driveway test (John Deere service manual hosted by Doosan Portable Power).
How can excessive blow-by harm an engine?
If the ventilation system cannot control crankcase gases, pressure can rise and contribute to oil leakage. Combustion gases in the crankcase are also why ventilation and emissions control matter. The presence of an oil leak does not, by itself, prove blow-by or identify which part has failed; the leak and pressure symptoms need to be assessed in the context of the engine’s design and service specifications.

Excessive blow-by can be associated with poor cylinder sealing, but the available evidence does not support predicting inevitable engine failure, a safe driving distance, or a repair cost from the symptom alone. Persistent symptoms warrant diagnosis rather than guesswork.
How do I know if my engine has excessive blow-by?
There is no single normal-versus-excessive measurement that applies to all engines. Acceptable flow depends on the engine and its manufacturer’s specifications. Visible vapor alone is not enough to conclude that an engine is failing.

For turbocharged vehicles, MAHLE lists power loss, rough idling, and whistling noises among possible indicators of defective crankcase ventilation. These symptoms are not proof of blow-by and are not universal across engines (MAHLE Technical Messenger, 2017).
A useful diagnostic approach separates the possible causes instead of treating every symptom as the same fault:

- Crankcase ventilation: Check whether the ventilation path is functioning as designed for that vehicle.
- Cylinder sealing: If symptoms persist, a technician may need to assess evidence of ring, cylinder, or other power-cylinder sealing problems.
- Turbocharger involvement: Consider this where the engine is turbocharged and the vehicle-specific evidence points in that direction.
- Manufacturer procedure: Compare findings with the service information and specifications for the exact engine.
SAE J2798 covers problem-solving methods for identifying causes of power-cylinder blow-by oil consumption and was revised in December 2021 (SAE J2798). The appropriate tests still depend on the vehicle and its manufacturer’s procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a bad PCV valve cause blow-by?
A faulty PCV valve can interfere with the route that carries crankcase gases into the induction system, so it may contribute to ventilation or pressure symptoms. But replacing the valve is appropriate only when diagnosis identifies a fault in that system. It cannot restore worn rings or repair damaged cylinders.
Quick Recap
What should you do if you suspect excessive blow-by?
- Identify the exact vehicle and engine. Record the year, make, model, and engine; procedures and acceptable specifications are not interchangeable across engines.
- Use the manufacturer’s service information. Follow the applicable procedure to assess the crankcase ventilation path and any measured blow-by. Do not apply the John Deere check for its specified diesel engines to a different vehicle.
- Have persistent symptoms investigated. A technician familiar with that engine can distinguish ventilation problems from cylinder-sealing or, where applicable, turbocharger faults.
- Repair the confirmed cause. Replace a PCV component only if testing identifies a ventilation fault; other findings may require a different repair.
