What Is Eco Charge Mode, and How Does It Benefit Electric Vehicles?

Eco Charge is product-specific: it may schedule charging for a chosen time window or adjust charging to use local generation. Here’s what the documented Vestel and zappi modes do and where their limits differ.

Eco Charge mode is not a universal setting in electric vehicles: it means different things on different chargers. On the Vestel EVC04, it is a time schedule that can make charging wait for a selected interval. On myenergi zappi chargers, ECO and ECO+ respond to local generation and household electricity use. The benefit depends on which feature you have, your electricity tariff and energy sources, and how soon you need the car charged.

What “Eco Charge” means depends on the product

The setting may belong to the vehicle, home charger, or its app. The documented example specifically named “Eco Charge Mode” is in Vestel’s EVC04-AC22SW charger manual. The separate ECO and ECO+ names discussed below are zappi charger modes, not interchangeable names for Vestel’s time schedule.

Check the charger or vehicle manual for the exact behavior. A label such as “eco” alone does not tell you whether the feature schedules a session, responds to solar generation, limits grid imports, or combines those functions.

How the Vestel EVC04 timed Eco Charge works

Vestel’s EVC04-AC22SW user manual (version 7.3.0, © 2020) says that when Eco Charge is activated, the user can set charging start and finish intervals. The manual describes setting the interval according to peak hours of electricity usage.

For a full list of compatible models, check out the Full Compatibility List on our product page.
  • Indication Displays - LED display that can tell you the status as well as indicate errors while charging your electric vehicle.
  • If charging starts within the configured Eco interval, charging proceeds normally.
  • If charging is initiated outside that interval, the charger waits for the configured Eco period.
  • An authorized RFID card or the app’s “Charge Now” button can start charging immediately instead of waiting.

This is a schedule, not a claim that the charger detects the cheapest tariff automatically. To use it for off-peak charging, set the interval to match the off-peak window on your own tariff and confirm how the charger treats a session that begins before or after it.

How zappi ECO and ECO+ differ

The zappi EV Charger Manual describes modes that adjust charging in response to local generation and other household demand. Their import and pause behavior differs:

Mode What it does What happens when surplus is low
ECO Continuously adjusts the charge rate to reduce grid electricity use. If available surplus falls below 1.4 kW, the manual says the shortfall is drawn from the grid.
ECO+ Adjusts the charge rate to limit grid use. It can pause when imported grid power exceeds the configured allowance and resume when sufficient surplus is available. The manual notes that the EV charging standard does not support charging below 1.4 kW.

The 1.4 kW figure is a zappi operating detail documented in that manual, not a universal threshold for EV chargers. The manual excerpt does not establish a publication date.

What benefits can you expect?

Shift charging into a suitable tariff window

A timer can help align a home charging session with an off-peak period if your electricity tariff offers one and you configure the charger’s interval accordingly. The potential bill benefit depends on your tariff, charging schedule, and electricity use; a schedule by itself does not guarantee a lower bill.

  • SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
  • GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.

Use local generation when it is available

A surplus-responsive mode can direct locally generated electricity to the car and reduce grid imports when generation exceeds household demand. How much it can contribute depends on generation, household load, charging settings, and the vehicle’s ability to accept the available charge rate.

Distinguish a feature from a guaranteed outcome

The cited manuals describe how these modes operate but do not quantify typical bill savings or emissions reductions. They also do not establish that Eco Charge extends battery life. Treat those outcomes as dependent on your own energy supply, tariff, settings, and charging needs, not as guaranteed benefits of selecting an “eco” mode.

Trade-offs: waiting, variable charging, and boosts

  • A timed schedule can delay charging. If the car needs energy before the configured interval, a waiting schedule may not suit the trip; Vestel documents “Charge Now” and an authorized RFID card as immediate-start overrides.
  • Surplus modes may charge slowly or pause. When generation is insufficient, ECO+ may pause under its configured import allowance. ECO can draw a grid shortfall instead.
  • A boost can prioritize speed or a target time over surplus-only charging. The zappi manual describes manual, smart, and timed boost functions. Boosting sets the charge rate to maximum and may draw power from the mains.

Check the manual for what happens when a schedule or surplus condition is not met, and which override or boost controls are available on your exact model.

How to decide which mode fits your charging routine

  1. Identify where the setting lives. Confirm whether it is in the vehicle, charger, or app, then consult that product’s manual. Do not assume two products use “Eco” to mean the same thing.
  2. Check the control method. Determine whether it uses a fixed start-and-finish interval, reacts to local generation and household demand, or offers both types of control.
  3. Check grid behavior. Find out whether the charger imports electricity when surplus is low, pauses, or resumes automatically when conditions improve.
  4. Confirm how to start urgently. Look for a Charge Now control, RFID override, or boost, and whether using it can draw power from the mains.
  5. Check practical compatibility. Confirm the charger suits your vehicle and electrical installation. The cited manuals describe their own products; they do not establish cross-brand compatibility.
