Why are RWB Porsches so wide?
The wide body is the defining visual choice. Broad fenders accommodate the conspicuous proportions of the build, while assertive aero and other details make the modified 911 immediately recognizable. This is not a subtle badge-and-trim package: the bodywork changes the car’s silhouette.
There is no single identical specification for every RWB. RWB presents its builds as individualized, with owners choosing design details in consultation with a partner. Why are enthusiasts drawn to them—and why do they divide opinion?
A highly recognizable design
The exaggerated fenders and prominent aero give the cars a strong visual identity. For people who want a 911 that stands out, that extremity is the point; for people who prefer restrained styling or an unmodified look, it can be too much.
A build associated with its maker
Nakai’s direct role, as described by RWB, gives the conversion a recognizable author. Combined with owner-specific choices, that can make the car feel more like a personal commission than a generic kit installation. That helps explain the appeal without establishing that every build is objectively better or more valuable.
A polarizing presence
MotorTrend describes RWB cars as prompting both enthusiastic admiration and sharp criticism. The same visible modifications and individual character that attract fans can repel others. “Everyone” is an exaggeration: the attraction is real, but it is not universal.

Can any Porsche 911 become an RWB?
Not every 911 should be assumed eligible. RWB UK’s current FAQ lists G-body, 930, 964, 993, 996 and 997 cars as models that can be modified. It also warns that kit parts are model-specific and cannot be interchanged. Confirm a particular chassis and its kit compatibility with the regional partner handling the build, because eligibility and arrangements may change. RWB UK FAQ
RWB is not limited to air-cooled 911s. Porsche says the 996 generation marked the transition from air to water cooling, and RWB UK includes both 996 and 997 cars in its eligibility list. The cooling type is a piece of 911 history, not a definition of RWB.
How does an RWB build work?
The details vary by region, but RWB USA describes a sequence in which a customer decides on a build, purchases the kit, enters the build queue and schedules installation once the kit ships. The USA FAQ says Nakai travels to customers and builds cars around the world; RWB UK says builds are arranged through regional partners, so the car need not be sent to Japan. RWB Lifestyle’s 2024 process article describes selecting a base 911, consulting an authorized partner on the design and preparing the finish. RWB USA says paint, suspension, wheels and tires must be ready for its described assembly process, while the engine need not be finished or installed for kit installation. These descriptions are not a universal checklist; ask the responsible regional partner what must be completed for a specific build.
Timing and what to confirm
RWB UK’s FAQ gives an allocation estimate of six months to two years. That is a regional estimate, not a guaranteed worldwide wait. RWB USA’s FAQ contains an “almost a year” statement dated March 2016; it is historical and should not be treated as a current U.S. schedule. Contact the current regional partner for timing and arrangements.
- Ask whether the exact chassis is eligible and which kit fits it.
- Confirm current slot timing and what is included in the build process.
- Clarify which preparation—such as paint, suspension, wheels and tires—must be completed before installation in your region.
How does RWB fit into Porsche 911 history?
Porsche dates the 911’s world premiere to 1963. Its history places RWB’s work within a long-running model line that has changed substantially across generations, including a major change in engine cooling. Porsche describes the 993 Turbo as a late high point in air-cooled six-cylinder development; with the 996, Porsche moved the boxer engine to water cooling. The historical contrast helps explain why older 911s have a particular place in enthusiast culture, but it does not show that air-cooled cars are inherently better or that an RWB must be air-cooled. In discussing the change, Porsche engineer and former 911 model-line vice president August Achleitner recalled: “The switch from air to water cooling was our ticket to the new technology.” Porsche says the move to four valves per cylinder required converting the boxer engine to water cooling. These are details of Porsche’s engineering history, not claims about RWB performance.
Does an RWB conversion make a 911 faster or better?
The cited descriptions establish RWB’s styling, customization and build process; they do not provide a controlled performance comparison with stock 911s or other conversions. A wide body and prominent aero alone are not proof of higher speed, better handling or improved track performance. Evaluate a specific car and its components for the use you have in mind rather than treating the RWB name as a performance measurement.
