Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAfter a crash, an F1 team has to establish whether the car is safe, what is damaged and what work the rules allow before the next session. The car may be repaired or have parts replaced, but a team cannot assume that any repair or component swap is permitted—especially when parc fermé restrictions apply. A crash also does not automatically earn the driver a penalty: damage assessment and the stewards’ decision about an incident are separate matters.
What happens immediately after a crash?
The team first needs to understand the condition of the car and whether it can safely continue or be prepared for a later session. How extensive that assessment is depends on the damage. The regulations set boundaries for certain work and replacement parts, but do not prescribe a universal public workshop sequence, a standard list of components checked first, or a fixed repair time.

That distinction matters: there is no rule-based promise that every damaged car can be repaired in time, or that a particular part will always be replaced. The team must assess its own car and then determine what work is allowed in the circumstances. A repair being physically possible does not, by itself, make it permissible under the rules that apply at that point in the event.

How do parc fermé rules affect repairs?
Parc fermé is a regulated period in which teams’ ability to work on a car is restricted. The applicable regulations identify some work that is permitted; work outside those allowances generally requires a written request and approval from the FIA Technical Delegate. The exact rules depend on the season and regulation issue, so a clause-level answer should be tied to a specific edition rather than treated as timeless.

The accessible FIA texts for 2025 and 2026 Issue 04 include repair of “genuine accident damage” among the work that may be carried out in the relevant parc fermé context. That does not mean any damage claim automatically authorizes any repair. The work still has to fit the rule and the circumstances, and other restrictions may apply.
What counts as genuine accident damage?
In the accessible regulations, the definition includes damage caused by contact with a barrier or another car on track. It also includes certain off-track damage, but only where the incident causes a significant loss of lap time or a lap is deleted. An off-track excursion alone is therefore not necessarily enough to meet that stated category.
This is a regulatory definition, not a general description of every problem a team might discover after a crash. A mechanical fault, routine wear, or damage that does not meet the definition cannot simply be assumed to qualify for the same allowance. Where the permitted-work provisions do not cover a proposed job, the approval process matters.

When is FIA approval needed?
The accessible rule text says work not expressly listed as permitted requires a written request and Technical Delegate approval. It also constrains replacement parts: they must be the same in design and similar in mass, inertia and function to the original part. Removed parts are retained by the FIA. In practical terms, this is not an unrestricted opportunity to redesign or upgrade the car while repairing it.
The 2025 Sporting Regulations, Issue 4, also describe controls on parts removed for permitted work or essential safety checks: they must remain close to the car and visible to the assigned scrutineer, and be refitted before the car leaves the pit lane. Treat that as an example of the 2025 wording, not a guarantee that the 2026 text is identical.

Can the team replace damaged parts?
Yes, replacement can be part of a repair, but the part and the circumstances have to satisfy the rules in force. The accessible regulations require a replacement to be equivalent in specific ways: same design, and similar mass, inertia and function. Those tests restrict what can be fitted; a team cannot treat crash damage as permission to install a different specification.
The phrase “similar” is part of the rule, but the material available here does not establish a universal numerical tolerance for those characteristics. Nor does it provide a complete component-by-component list of what may be exchanged after every type of incident. The answer depends on the applicable regulation, the proposed work and any required approval.
Some work may be allowed as repair of genuine accident damage during the relevant parc fermé period; other work may need written approval. The team must also follow any handling and inspection requirements that apply to removed parts. The 2025 requirement to keep certain parts visible to the scrutineer illustrates that a permitted repair can still be subject to oversight.
Can a driver switch to the other car?
A change of car is not an automatic remedy whenever one car is damaged. The accessible 2026 Sporting Regulations Issue 04 text ties an exception to a specific condition: genuine accident damage or a significant failure must necessitate replacing the survival cell. A survival cell is the central structure around the driver; the cited provision does not describe a general right to switch cars for any repair or inconvenience.
That exception has constraints. Under the accessible Issue 04 wording, replacement components must be the same in design and similar in mass, inertia and function, and the suspension setup must match. Because the FIA index now lists a later 2026 issue, these details should not be presented as verified current wording without checking that issue.

So the short answer is: sometimes, but only under defined conditions. Whether a particular driver may use the other car depends on whether the situation meets the rule and the requirements in the current regulations. There is no basis for assuming every team has a ready spare car available for a driver to take over.
Does a crash automatically bring a penalty?
No. A damaged car and a penalized driver are not the same thing. A collision does not, by itself, establish that a driver broke a rule or deserve a sanction. Any penalty depends on the incident, the rule that applies and the officials’ decision.
A sanction could also relate to a separate regulatory breach rather than the collision itself—for example, work carried out without required approval or a component change that violates a restriction. The accessible material establishes the parc fermé approval framework, but does not provide the latest Issue 09 penalty clauses in full. It therefore cannot support a definitive list of penalties or a prediction for a specific crash.
For an individual incident, the relevant evidence is the applicable season’s regulations and the stewards’ decision for that event. Without that decision, assigning blame or stating that a particular driver will receive a grid penalty, fine or other sanction would go beyond what the rules alone establish.

FIA regulations are issued in dated versions, and that version control matters when describing what a team may do. The FIA index retrieved on 11 October 2026 lists the 2026 F1 Regulations, Section B [Sporting], Issue 09, published on 1 October 2026. The detailed provisions summarized above come from an accessible 2026 Issue 04 text dated 10 December 2025 and the 2025 Sporting Regulations, Issue 4, dated 26 February 2025. Issue 04 and the 2025 edition are not the latest 2026 text.

Accordingly, Issue 09 is the latest version identified by the FIA index as of 11 October 2026, but the exact clause details described here are grounded in earlier editions. The broad explanation—that repair allowances, approvals and component constraints govern work during parc fermé—is supported by those earlier texts; exact current wording and any incident-specific consequence should be checked against Issue 09 and the event’s official decisions.
What can and cannot be concluded about repair time and cost?
The cited regulations do not establish a standard repair timetable, price, or damage estimate. They also do not show that every crash requires a full rebuild, that all parts can be replaced quickly, or that a particular type of damage has a predictable cost. Those outcomes depend on the actual car and incident, and the material cited here does not provide figures to quantify them.
What can be said is narrower and more useful: the team assesses the damage, determines whether work fits an express allowance or needs approval, and must comply with the applicable restrictions on replacement parts and oversight. The exact path from impact to a car ready for the next session is case-specific, not a fixed procedure published in these rules.
A practical way to read a crash report
When a report says a car was repaired, a component was changed or a driver moved to another car, separate the technical outcome from the rules question. These checkpoints help avoid treating every repair as equivalent:

- What happened to the car? Look for the stated damage, without assuming an unreported part was replaced.
- Was parc fermé in force? Restrictions and permitted work depend on the applicable session and regulation.
- Was the work expressly permitted? If not, the accessible texts call for a written request and Technical Delegate approval.
- Was a car change involved? The accessible Issue 04 exception is linked to a survival-cell replacement necessitated by genuine accident damage or significant failure.
- Was there a sporting ruling? A penalty should be attributed to a specific rule and official decision, not inferred from the fact of a crash.
