It later continued under the name Faster with Newbern and Cotten. MotorTrend eventually listed both versions among the programs taking their final laps; the available accounts do not establish a personal reason for Finnegan’s departure.
What was Faster With Finnegan?
MotorTrend launched the series in 2020 with Mike Finnegan, Mike Cotten, and David Newbern. Its premise was straightforward: start with an inexpensive, worn-out, or otherwise ordinary vehicle, modify it on a tight budget, then see how it performed in a racing challenge. The show brought a practical, humorous, build-and-race sensibility to automotive entertainment.

MotorTrend’s launch announcement framed the audience as everyday enthusiasts. Mike Suggett, then the network’s head of programming and development, described it as a series for “the millions of weekend mechanics across the U.S. who like to build, fix and (sometimes) race on a budget.” MotorTrend’s launch announcement
How did the show work?
Episodes followed a recognizable build-to-race arc: Finnegan introduced a vehicle the team had bought, the crew settled on a challenge and competitor, they modified the car, and then they tested the result in a race. The appeal was in watching an imperfect starting point turn into a machine built for one specific contest—not in presenting a polished, all-purpose performance build.

Season two kept that structure while changing up the challenges. MotorTrend highlighted an Opel Funny Car, a waterless boat race in a Cadillac, and a Vette Kart rally setup. MotorTrend’s season-two announcement
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did it become Faster with Newbern and Cotten?
The show continued under the title Faster with Newbern and Cotten. David Newbern’s own site says MotorTrend wanted to continue the program and that it became the Newbern-and-Cotten version. That supports the title transition, but it does not give a verified personal explanation for why Finnegan was no longer part of the renamed show. David Newbern’s account
It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a continuation under a different title and hosting lineup than to present an unverified story about a falling-out, scheduling issue, or other personal cause.
Is Faster With Finnegan still on?
MotorTrend’s 2024 retrospective listed both Faster with Finnegan and Faster with Newbern and Cotten among the programs taking their final laps. That is the clearest supported status update: the retrospective treated both iterations as ending, rather than announcing another season. MotorTrend’s 2024 retrospective
Streaming catalogs are a separate question from whether a show is still producing episodes. Apple TV and Hulu have listed the series, but catalog availability can change and may differ by country.
