What Happened After a 3-Year-Old Got Behind the Wheel of a Running Truck in Woodland?

A running Dodge truck moved at a Woodland gas station and fatally struck 2-year-old Ailahni Sanchez Martinez. The truck owner was charged, but a grand jury later returned a no bill after prosecutors cited a vehicle defect.

A black Dodge truck left running at a 76 gas station in Woodland, California, began moving on March 16, 2024, after a 3-year-old child apparently got out of a car seat and reached the driver’s area. The truck struck 2-year-old Ailahni Sanchez Martinez near her family’s taco stand. She was taken to a hospital and died from her injuries.

The adult who owned the truck, 34-year-old Woodland resident Julio Navarro-Vidrio, was later charged with involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment. But the criminal case did not proceed to trial: in December 2024, a Yolo County criminal grand jury returned a no bill after prosecutors said a vehicle defect allowed the child to shift the truck into drive without pressing the brake. Prosecutors said they would file no additional criminal charges. A no bill is not an acquittal or a finding that no negligence occurred.

The short answer

The crash happened at approximately 3:45–3:46 p.m. on Saturday, March 16, 2024, in the parking area of a 76 gas station on the 300 block of West Street near Court Street and West Main Street in Woodland, Yolo County. It was not a crash during normal roadway travel.

According to the initial police account and later reporting, an adult left a black Dodge truck running while going inside the station store. A 3-year-old child was reportedly inside in a car seat. The child apparently got out of the restraint and reached the driver’s seat. The truck then began moving and struck Ailahni, who was near her family’s taco stand. Family members transported Ailahni to a hospital, where she died.

Police initially investigated the incident as an uncontrolled vehicle movement. The truck and the adult associated with it were found at the scene, so it was not treated as a hit-and-run. Police also said DUI was not suspected. The investigation eventually led prosecutors to charge Navarro-Vidrio, but a grand jury later returned a no bill. Based on the public reporting reviewed through August 10, 2026, the criminal case is closed.

What happened at the Woodland gas station?

  1. The truck was parked at the gas station. The incident occurred at a 76 station in Woodland’s 300 block of West Street, near Court Street and West Main Street.
  2. The engine was left running. Public accounts said the adult associated with the truck went inside the store while the vehicle remained occupied by the 3-year-old child.
  3. The child apparently left the car seat. Police and later reports said the child got out of the restraint and reached the driver’s area. The available accounts do not establish exactly how the child moved from the car seat or whether the child intentionally moved the gear selector.
  4. The truck began moving. Police initially said the vehicle was found in drive with the child inside. Prosecutors later said a defect allowed the child to put the truck in drive without pressing the brake pedal.
  5. The truck struck Ailahni Sanchez Martinez. The 2-year-old was near her family’s taco stand in the gas-station parking area. Family members told local media that she had been sitting at a table and eating food.
  6. Ailahni was taken to a hospital and died. Public reports say she died from her injuries. An autopsy report and more specific public medical findings were not located in the sources reviewed.

The public accounts describe a short, uncontrolled movement in a parking area. The truck’s exact speed and the distance it traveled have not been publicly established. It is therefore more accurate to say that the child was found in the driver’s seat after the truck began moving than to suggest the child knowingly drove through the parking lot.

Was the 3-year-old actually driving?

That wording needs care. Some headlines described the child as driving, but the strongest available accounts support a narrower description: a 3-year-old child was found in the driver’s seat after an unattended running truck began moving.

Police and prosecutors reportedly believed that the child got out of the car seat and reached the driver’s area, where the truck shifted into drive. The public record reviewed does not include surveillance video, a forensic reconstruction, a component-level mechanical report or a transcript explaining precisely what the child did. It also does not establish that the child pressed the accelerator, intentionally operated the vehicle or traveled any substantial distance.

The child was not the criminal defendant. The criminal allegations concerned the adult’s decision to leave a running vehicle with a young child unattended—not criminal intent or responsibility on the part of the 3-year-old.

Who was Ailahni Sanchez Martinez?

Officials and her family identified the victim as Ailahni Sanchez Martinez, a 2-year-old girl. Local coverage identified her parents as Rosa Martinez and Sandro Sanchez.

Family members said Ailahni was close to her third birthday and described her as happy and fond of dancing. They also told local media that she was at the family’s taco stand when the truck moved. Those details help establish where she was and how the family experienced the loss, but they should not be confused with independently established scene evidence.

Ailahni’s family initially called for accountability. The later decision not to indict Navarro-Vidrio did not erase the fatal result or resolve every question about the family’s potential civil remedies.

What police initially said

Early reports said investigators found the truck and the 3-year-old at the scene. The vehicle was reportedly in drive, and police were investigating how it had moved. Surveillance footage, witness statements and physical evidence were among the information investigators reviewed, according to the reporting available at the time.

Police said the incident was not believed to involve DUI. Local reporting also said alcohol and drugs were not believed to be factors. That should be stated as an investigative conclusion at the time—not as a claim that publicly released toxicology conclusively ruled out every form of impairment.

It was also not a hit-and-run. The truck and the adult associated with it remained at the location, and police described the parties as cooperative during the initial investigation.

Initial coverage did not establish why the truck moved. The later prosecution account added the allegation that a vehicle defect allowed the child to shift the truck into drive without brake pressure. That was a later investigative and prosecutorial explanation, not a detail established in the first police reports.

Why was Julio Navarro-Vidrio charged?

On May 1, 2024, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced charges against Navarro-Vidrio, identifying him as a 34-year-old Woodland resident and the truck’s owner.

The charges were:

  • One count of involuntary manslaughter
  • One count of child endangerment
  • An enhancement alleging great bodily harm and a particularly vulnerable victim

The DA’s announcement said Navarro-Vidrio was out of custody and scheduled an arraignment for May 10, 2024. Later coverage reported that he appeared by Zoom and pleaded not guilty. The charging announcement was an allegation, not a conviction or judicial finding that he committed the offenses.

The likely prosecution question was whether leaving a running truck with a 3-year-old child unattended constituted criminally blameworthy conduct and was sufficiently connected to Ailahni’s death. That is legal context, not a finding by a court. The publicly released charging announcement does not provide the full complaint or explain every factual and legal theory prosecutors intended to present.

What the California statutes mean

California Penal Code §192 defines manslaughter. Its involuntary-manslaughter provision, §192(b), includes certain unlawful acts that do not amount to a felony and lawful acts performed without due caution. California also has a separate vehicular-manslaughter provision in §192(c). Without the complete complaint or a court transcript, it would be inappropriate to reconstruct the precise theory behind the charge. Read the text of Penal Code §192.

Penal Code §273a, the child-endangerment statute, addresses willfully causing or permitting a child to suffer, be injured or be placed in a situation where the child’s health or person is endangered under specified circumstances. The word willfully matters: a tragic outcome by itself does not automatically prove the offense. The statute is available through the California Legislature’s code database.

Other California vehicle laws provide useful context but should not be presented as the explanation for this prosecution:

  • Vehicle Code §22515 addresses leaving a motor vehicle unattended on a highway without setting the brakes and stopping the motor. This incident occurred at a gas-station parking area, and the public record reviewed does not establish whether that property was legally considered a highway for purposes of the statute or whether prosecutors relied on it.
  • Vehicle Code §22516 addresses leaving a locked vehicle containing a person who cannot readily escape. The reviewed sources do not establish whether the truck was locked or whether the statute applied.
  • Vehicle Code §27360 generally addresses child passenger restraints for children under 8 being transported on a highway. It does not, by itself, explain the legal issues surrounding this gas-station incident.

The relevant statutes can be reviewed in the California Vehicle Code and at the Legislature’s page for §27360.

What did the grand jury’s no bill mean?

In December 2024, a Yolo County criminal grand jury returned a no bill. Prosecutors then dismissed the criminal case and said they would not file additional criminal charges.

A no bill means the grand jury did not return an indictment after the prosecution presented the case. Prosecutors said the grand jury did not find probable cause that the incident constituted a criminal act. Because there was no trial before a petit jury, the result was not an acquittal.

The no bill also does not mean that a court found Navarro-Vidrio innocent, that the vehicle defect was conclusively identified, or that no negligence occurred. It means the criminal prosecution did not obtain the grand-jury finding needed to proceed on the charges presented. Criminal liability and civil negligence are separate legal questions with different burdens of proof and different remedies.

What defect did prosecutors identify?

The later explanation from prosecutors was specific in its effect but not in its engineering details: they said the child was able to shift the truck into drive without pressing the brake pedal due to a defect in the vehicle.

No reviewed public source identifies:

  • the truck’s exact model, trim or model year;
  • the failed component;
  • the vehicle’s repair or maintenance history;
  • an applicable recall number;
  • the results of an independent engineering inspection; or
  • the truck’s final mechanical disposition.

Many automatic vehicles use a brake-transmission shift interlock designed to require the service brake before the transmission can be shifted out of park. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explains this type of vehicle-safety context, but that does not prove the Woodland truck had a failed shift interlock. It is also not evidence of a recall or a confirmed design defect in a particular Dodge model.

The legally important point is that a mechanical defect does not automatically answer every question about responsibility. The grand jury’s decision addressed whether the evidence supported a criminal case; it was not a complete technical or civil finding about the vehicle.

What remains unknown?

Question What the public record establishes
What was the 3-year-old’s sex? Official public accounts reviewed use gender-neutral wording or identify the child only by age. The child should not be called a boy without a confirming original record.
What exact truck was involved? Reports identify a black Dodge truck or Dodge pickup. The model, trim and model year were not publicly identified in the reviewed sources.
What component failed? Prosecutors said a defect allowed the truck to be shifted into drive without brake pressure. The component-level failure was not publicly explained.
Did the child physically move the gear selector? That was the reported police and prosecutorial theory, but the reviewed public record does not include video, a forensic reconstruction or a transcript proving the sequence.
Was the truck locked? That has not been established in the sources reviewed.
Was the child properly harnessed when the truck began moving? Reports said the child had been in a car seat and later reached the driver’s area, but no detailed restraint inspection was publicly released.
How far or how fast did the truck travel? The distance and speed have not been publicly established.
What was Ailahni’s exact medical cause of death? Public reports say she died from injuries after hospital transport. No autopsy report was located in the reviewed coverage.
Was a civil lawsuit filed? No publicly indexed civil filing was located in the sources reviewed. That does not prove there was no private settlement or non-indexed proceeding.
What happened to the truck? No reviewed public record confirms whether it was repaired, recalled, inspected further or retained as evidence.

Could Ailahni’s family still bring a civil case?

The end of a criminal case does not automatically bar a possible wrongful-death or negligence claim. Civil cases use a different burden of proof and can seek different remedies from criminal prosecutions.

Later reporting said the family could still pursue a civil case, but the public sources reviewed do not establish that a lawsuit was actually filed or resolved. The most accurate statement is: no publicly indexed civil filing was located in the sources reviewed; that does not prove no private settlement or non-indexed proceeding exists. The Yolo Superior Court public case-search portal is the relevant official resource for checking publicly available court records.

Vehicle rollaway safety: what drivers should do

The case’s legal outcome should be kept separate from general safety advice. NHTSA says it is never safe to leave a child alone in or around a vehicle. A car seat is a restraint system; it is not a substitute for adult supervision or for turning off and securing the vehicle.

  • Turn the engine off whenever leaving the vehicle.
  • Put the transmission in park.
  • Set the parking brake.
  • Take the key or key fob with you.
  • Lock the vehicle when it is unattended.
  • Keep keys and fobs out of children’s reach.
  • Do not rely solely on a car seat, child lock, backup camera or automatic safety interlock.
  • If a vehicle begins rolling, do not put yourself in its path. Call emergency services and warn others only if you can do so safely.

NHTSA warns that vehicle rollaway can injure someone trying to stop the vehicle and can cause the vehicle to strike people or objects. These precautions are not a conclusion about what happened in Woodland; they are general measures intended to reduce the risk of an unattended vehicle moving.

Current status

As of August 10, 2026, the latest publicly available reporting reviewed describes the criminal matter as closed. The sequence was:

  • March 16, 2024: The truck struck Ailahni at the Woodland gas station, and she later died from her injuries.
  • May 1, 2024: The Yolo County DA announced involuntary-manslaughter and child-endangerment charges against Julio Navarro-Vidrio, along with the bodily-harm and vulnerable-victim enhancement.
  • May 10, 2024: The DA had scheduled the arraignment; later reporting said Navarro-Vidrio pleaded not guilty.
  • December 2024: A criminal grand jury returned a no bill. Prosecutors dismissed the case and said no additional criminal charges would be filed.

No later public criminal development was located in the reviewed coverage. The exact vehicle defect, the full evidentiary basis for the no bill, and any civil litigation remain matters the public record reviewed here does not resolve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the 3-year-old charged after the truck struck Ailahni Sanchez Martinez?

No. The child was not the criminal defendant. Prosecutors charged the adult who owned the truck, Julio Navarro-Vidrio, with involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.

Does a grand jury no bill mean Julio Navarro-Vidrio was acquitted?

No. A no bill means the grand jury did not return an indictment after prosecutors presented the case. There was no trial verdict, so the result was not an acquittal. It also does not establish that no negligence occurred.

What was wrong with the Dodge truck?

Prosecutors said a vehicle defect allowed the child to shift the truck into drive without pressing the brake. The public sources reviewed do not identify the failed component, the truck’s model year or any recall or independent engineering report.

The Bottom Line

Ailahni Sanchez Martinez died after an unattended running Dodge truck moved in a Woodland gas-station parking area and struck her on March 16, 2024. The adult owner was charged because prosecutors focused on the decision to leave the running vehicle with a young child inside, but a Yolo County grand jury later returned a no bill after prosecutors cited a vehicle defect. The criminal case therefore ended without a trial, conviction or acquittal. The exact defect and any civil-case outcome remain publicly unresolved.
