Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It depends on the electric car, its market and its build date. Some EVs let you pause the exterior low-speed pedestrian warning for a drive; some offer a choice of compliant sounds; others have no driver-accessible setting. Check the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle before looking for a menu. A pause may end automatically when you restart the car.
Which sound are you trying to change?
This question concerns the sound emitted outside the car to alert pedestrians and other road users when an electric vehicle is moving slowly. It is commonly called an Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), pedestrian warning, or low-speed prompt sound. It is separate from cabin alert volume, parking sensors, turn-signal sounds and driver-assistance warning tones; changing those controls will not necessarily change the exterior warning.

AVAS matters because electric cars can be difficult to hear at low speeds. EU Regulation 540/2014 describes the system as a sound intended to provide information about an operating vehicle. It also says the sound should indicate vehicle behavior—for example, by changing its level or characteristics in sync with speed. That describes the system’s purpose and requirements, not a standard set of controls that every driver will find in the car.
In practical terms, the question is not simply whether an EV has an exterior sound. It is whether its maker exposes a driver control for that sound, and what the control does. A pause temporarily suppresses the warning; a sound-selection menu changes which compliant sound is used. These are different functions, and a vehicle may offer either one, both, or neither.

What settings might be available?
The exact controls are set by the vehicle maker and can differ by model, market and build. The main possibilities are a temporary pause, selection among sounds, or no user-facing control.
| Possible control | What it does | Example and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary pause | Stops the warning for a limited period, commonly the current drive. | The 2020–2024 Tesla Model Y manual describes a pause for some vehicles built before approximately November 2021. The switch may be absent on later builds, and the manual says the feature may also be absent on vehicles built before approximately July 1, 2021. |
| Sound selection | Lets the driver select from different sound effects; the available options depend on the vehicle. | A C318-G MEA English manual describes a low-speed prompt sound menu with different effects. This is a market-specific example, not a menu path to assume for other cars. |
| No accessible setting | The warning remains on without a driver control to pause it or choose another sound. | The Tesla manual notes that its pause switch may not be available on some builds. Availability must be checked against the exact vehicle. |
EU Delegated Regulation 2017/1576 permits manufacturers to allow a driver to choose among different sounds, subject to compliance requirements. That permission does not require every EV to provide a sound-selection menu. Regulations establish requirements for the system; they do not establish one universal settings screen.
This distinction is useful when comparing two cars or two versions of the same model. Check four things: whether a control exists; whether it pauses the warning or selects a sound; whether it resets at restart; and which market and build dates are eligible. A sound choice in one country or production version is not evidence that another version has the same options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Use the manual for the vehicle’s actual model, model year or build date, and country or market. A menu from another trim, year or region can be misleading—even when the model name is the same.

- Identify the vehicle precisely. Note the make, model, model year and, if available, build date. Confirm the country or market for which the car was supplied.
- Open the matching owner’s manual. Use the vehicle’s in-car help, the manufacturer’s official manual source, or the printed manual. Make sure the edition matches the vehicle rather than a newer or overseas version.
- Search for the relevant terms. Try “AVAS,” “pedestrian warning,” “low-speed prompt sound,” or the wording used by that automaker. Look for a section about exterior sounds or vehicle safety as well as the index.
- Check the conditions and reset behavior. Read whether the control is available only on certain builds, applies only to the current drive, or returns to on after the vehicle is powered on again.
- Use the manual’s stated control path only. If it lists a menu or steering-wheel shortcut, follow that path for your vehicle. If no relevant control is documented, do not assume another model’s instructions apply.
One documented example is the pre-approximately-November-2021 Tesla Model Y procedure: Controls > Safety > Pedestrian Warning > Pause. The manual says this pauses the sound for the current drive. It also says the switch may be unavailable on vehicles built after approximately November 2021, and that the feature may be absent on vehicles built before approximately July 1, 2021. Treat those dates and that menu path as specific to the cited Model Y manual, not as general Tesla or EV instructions.
A separate example appears in the C318-G MEA English manual: Application Center > Personalized Sound Effects > Low Speed Prompt Sound. It describes options to disable the feature or select different sound effects, plus a steering-wheel shortcut. The manual also says temporary deactivation ends automatically when the vehicle is powered on again. This path and behavior apply to that manual’s market-specific example; they are not universal.
If you cannot find a setting, first verify the manual’s market and edition, then search more than one term. Automakers do not all use “AVAS” in their menus; “pedestrian warning” or “low-speed prompt sound” may be the relevant wording. Check whether the manual describes eligibility by production date, rather than assuming a setting is missing because it has moved. For model-specific instructions, the useful details to provide are make, model, model year or build date, and country or market.

A control described as a pause is not necessarily a persistent setting. The C318-G manual says temporary deactivation ends when the vehicle is powered on again. EU requirements also specify that, when a switch or pause function is fitted, the system defaults to on at restart. As a result, a driver may need to use the pause again on a later drive, if the particular vehicle offers it.

Build date can affect availability as much as model year. The Tesla Model Y manual gives approximate manufacturing-date boundaries for its pause switch and warns that the control may be absent outside the eligible range. If the menu is missing, compare the manual with the car’s build details and market rather than assuming the setting has moved or that the warning itself is faulty.
Also distinguish a temporary pause from a permanent change. The examples here describe temporary deactivation or a sound choice within the vehicle’s available options; they do not establish a general way to make an EV’s warning stay off. Where a pause control is provided under the cited EU requirements, it is designed to return to on when the vehicle restarts.
What to do if there is no sound menu
- Confirm that the manual matches the car’s market, model and build or model year.
- Search using the automaker’s terminology as well as “AVAS” and “pedestrian warning.”
- Check whether the manual limits a setting to particular production dates or versions.
- If the manual does not document a control for your vehicle, treat the sound as not driver-adjustable unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise.
A missing pause or sound-selection menu does not establish that the car is malfunctioning. Some vehicles simply do not provide a user control, and the cited Tesla example explicitly warns that its pause switch is unavailable on some builds.
Do not use instructions for another car as a workaround, and do not unplug or alter the system to create a control the manufacturer has not provided. The regulation sets system requirements, while the automaker determines what driver-facing settings are available for that vehicle and market.

Should you turn the warning off?
The manuals advise keeping the warning active because it helps pedestrians notice an approaching vehicle. Tesla’s Model Y manual explains: “Electric vehicles operate quietly and this sound helps to alert pedestrians of your oncoming vehicle.” It warns that if pedestrians cannot hear the sound, they may not be aware of the approaching car and collision risk may rise. The C318-G manual likewise advises keeping the warning on to draw pedestrians’ attention.
For that reason, do not unplug, modify or otherwise try to defeat the system. If your car provides a temporary pause, use it only as the manual describes and understand that it may reset at the next start. A sound-selection control, where offered, is the appropriate way to choose among the vehicle’s available options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Speed figures are vehicle-specific
AVAS behavior is tied to low-speed operation, but the manuals cited here do not establish one speed threshold for all electric cars. The Tesla Model Y manual gives an approximate operating example of 33 km/h (21 mph); the C318-G manual describes speeds below 30 km/h. Those figures belong to their respective manual examples and should not be applied to other models. Consult your own manual for the vehicle’s operating range and behavior.
The practical answer
You may be able to pause the exterior pedestrian warning, choose another sound, or change nothing at all. The model, market and build determine which case applies. Search the matching owner’s manual for AVAS or the automaker’s equivalent term, follow only the instructions for your vehicle, and expect a temporary pause to return to on at restart when the manual or applicable requirements say so.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to change the sound of an electric car’s exterior warning?
Sometimes. Some vehicles offer a menu to select among different compliant low-speed warning sounds; others only offer a temporary pause or no driver control. EU Delegated Regulation 2017/1576 permits sound selection subject to requirements, but does not require every EV to provide it. Check the manual for your exact model, market and build.
Is there a setting for the pedestrian warning sound?
There may be, but the setting varies by vehicle. Search the matching owner’s manual for “AVAS,” “pedestrian warning,” or “low-speed prompt sound.” The manual should say whether your version has a control and whether it pauses the warning or changes the sound.
Will a pause stay off after I restart the car?
Not necessarily. The C318-G MEA English manual says temporary deactivation ends when the vehicle is powered on again. EU requirements say a fitted pause or switch function defaults to on at restart. Follow the instructions for your own vehicle.
Why can’t I find the pause control shown in another owner’s instructions?
Controls can depend on market and build date as well as model. For example, the cited 2020–2024 Tesla Model Y manual says its pause switch may be absent on vehicles built after approximately November 2021, and the feature may be absent on vehicles built before approximately July 1, 2021. Verify your vehicle details against its matching manual.
The Bottom Line
EV exterior sound controls are model-, market- and build-specific: a car may offer a temporary pause, a choice of compliant sounds, or no user setting. Use the matching owner’s manual, and keep in mind that a pause may reset to on at restart.
