M usually means manual mode on an automatic car. It lets you request a higher or lower gear, commonly with plus and minus controls on the shifter or steering-wheel paddles. It does not necessarily mean your car has a conventional clutch-operated manual transmission. The exact controls and behavior depend on the vehicle, so check the owner’s manual for its make, model, year, and market.
What does M mean on an automatic car?
M commonly identifies a manual-shift mode within an automatic transmission. Rather than letting the transmission choose every gear as it generally does in D, you request a gear change. The transmission may still limit or adjust your request to protect the engine or transmission.
The controls vary. A car may have a separate M or plus/minus position beside D, a button, or paddles behind the steering wheel. In many systems, + requests an upshift and − requests a downshift, but use your vehicle’s manual to confirm how its controls work.
What do the plus and minus signs on the shifter do?
They let you request a change in gear: + generally requests a higher gear, while − generally requests a lower one. For example, Ford’s owner-manual instructions for its cited U.S.-market feature say to select M, then pull the right (+) paddle to upshift or the left (−) paddle to downshift; returning to D switches the feature off. Volvo’s V60 instructions instead describe selecting M from D and moving the selector for plus or minus shifts. These are model-specific examples, not universal instructions.

How does M compare with D?

When might you use M?
To help control speed on a descent
A lower gear can provide engine braking: the engine helps slow the vehicle when you ease off the accelerator. That can reduce reliance on continuous braking on a long downhill stretch, but it does not eliminate the need to brake when necessary. Toyota describes selecting gears in M to achieve suitable engine-braking forces, and Mahindra recommends M with a lower gear for downhill vehicle control in its XUV 3XO manual.
On hills or while towing
Ford lists engine braking, hilly or mountainous roads, and towing as recommended scenarios for the manual-shift feature covered by its owner-manual instructions. That is not universal towing advice; follow the instructions for your vehicle and load.

Does M let you choose any gear and hold it?
Not necessarily. M does not guarantee unrestricted or fully manual control. Ford says a requested shift will not be accepted if it would take engine speed beyond its limits. Volvo says its transmission will downshift if the vehicle’s speed becomes too low for the selected gear. The safeguards and automatic behavior vary by vehicle, so do not assume M always holds a gear or prevents the transmission from shifting automatically.
Is M the same as L, B, or S?
No general meaning can be assumed from those other labels. L, B, and S can indicate different functions, and their operation depends on the vehicle. Check the owner’s manual rather than treating them as interchangeable with M.

How to find the right instructions for your car
- Identify your car’s make, model, model year, and market; controls and guidance can differ between versions.
- Open the matching owner’s manual and look for “M,” “manual mode,” “manual shift,” or “gear selector positions.”
- Follow that manual’s directions for entering or leaving M, using +/− or paddles, and any recommended driving situations.
For reference, manufacturer instructions include Ford’s owner manuals, the 2026 Toyota Land Cruiser owner’s manual, Volvo’s V60 gear-selector guidance, and Mahindra’s owner manuals. Use the document for your exact vehicle rather than assuming an example from another make applies.
