On the Jeep Wrangler covered by the owner handbook, an A inside a circle with an exclamation mark is the Service Stop/Start System warning light. It means the Stop/Start system is not functioning properly and needs service; the symbol does not identify the failed part. Because the exact model and year matter, check your Jeep’s owner manual and any message displayed with the light.
What the warning light means
The Wrangler owner handbook identifies the icon as the Service Stop/Start System warning light. Its wording is: “This warning light will illuminate when the Stop/Start system is not functioning properly and service is required. Contact an authorized dealer for service.”
In other words, the warning reports a problem with the system that automatically stops and restarts the engine under certain conditions. It does not say whether the cause is a battery, sensor, wiring issue, or another component. The icon alone is not enough to diagnose the fault or choose a replacement part.
What to do when it appears
- Read the dashboard message. Note any accompanying text, such as “SERVICE STOP/START SYSTEM.” The 2023 Wrangler manual describes that message and a yellow telltale for a malfunction.
- Check the owner manual for your Jeep’s model and year. The identification above is grounded in Wrangler manuals; it should not be assumed to apply identically to every Jeep model or market.
- Arrange service as the manual directs. The reviewed Wrangler handbook advises contacting an authorized dealer. Have the vehicle and any displayed message assessed rather than replacing a part based only on the icon.
Does the warning mean the Jeep will not restart?
Not necessarily. A 2022 Wrangler 4xe manual says that, in the circumstances it describes, a Stop/Start malfunction during an autostop may prevent the vehicle from restarting automatically and may require a key start. That guidance is specific to that manual and situation; it does not establish what will happen in every Jeep when this warning appears. Follow the instructions in your vehicle’s manual and any dashboard prompts.

Why the exact Jeep matters
The available manuals establish the warning’s meaning for the Wrangler versions they cover, not a universal definition for every Jeep.
