A live rear axle is an axle that transmits engine power to the rear wheels. In the common solid-axle layout, the two wheels are connected by a shared assembly, but a differential can still let them rotate at different speeds.
What “live” means
“Live” describes whether the axle transmits drive: a live axle carries torque to the wheels, while a dead axle does not. The term does not mean the differential is locked, nor does it necessarily describe how the suspension connects the wheels.
That second distinction is often described as solid or rigid versus independent. A conventional live rear axle is commonly a rigid axle: both rear wheels are supported by a shared assembly, so movement at one wheel can affect the other. Independent rear suspension lets each wheel move separately.
How a live rear axle sends power to the wheels
In a representative front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car, the propeller shaft turns a pinion. The pinion meshes with the crown wheel, which drives the differential and axle shafts; the shafts then transmit torque to the wheels. Kerala SCERT’s automobile technology material describes this arrangement and its components. Vehicle layouts vary, so this is an example rather than a universal configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- Product Incloud: 1 x 44 inch rear axle kit
- Replacement for go kart ATV quad and drift trikes
- The axle made by high strength chrome, can support more than 500lbs
- Products are fully tested prior to shipment the need of adjustment
- The total axle length: 1.12m, chain model 530-74 knots, sprocket model 530-37 teeth, brake disc diameter 220, flange diagonal 11cm, brake tubing length is 90cm, wheel suitable for four-hole diagonal 11cm hub, the diameter of the shaft is 33mm, sprocket to flange position 34cm, the distance between sprocket and brake disc: 7cm, chain: 530 model 74 knots, the nut for fixing the hub seat on the axle: 16*1.5, the size of the hub: 11cm diagonally
The differential is important: while both rear wheels are driven, it can allow them to turn at different speeds, such as when the vehicle corners. A live axle is therefore not the same thing as a locked axle.
Live rear axle compared with independent rear suspension
| Aspect | Common live rigid rear axle | Independent rear suspension |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel movement | The wheels are connected through a shared assembly; movement at one side can influence the other. | Each wheel can move separately. |
| Unsprung mass | The casing, shafts and final-drive hardware move with the wheels, adding unsprung mass. | The design can keep more of the drivetrain mass separate from the wheels; exact results depend on the design. |
| Construction | Technical references characterize live axles as simple, rugged and relatively inexpensive. | Construction and cost vary by design; there is no universal cost comparison. |
| Typical trade-off | Can offer useful articulation in some off-road applications, but wheel interaction and unsprung mass can compromise ride or wheel control on uneven roads. | Separate wheel movement can help each wheel respond independently, though overall performance depends on the full suspension setup. |
These are design tendencies, not guarantees. A vehicle’s ride, traction and handling depend on the complete suspension, its setup and the surface it is used on.

Why the terms are easy to confuse
“Live” answers whether the axle is driven. “Solid” or “rigid” answers whether the wheels share an axle assembly and suspension relationship. They are often used together because many familiar live rear axles are rigid, but the words describe different properties.
