A gearbox has three commonly taught functions: it transfers motion and power from an input shaft to an output, changes the relationship between output speed and torque, and—depending on its gear arrangement—can change the direction or orientation of rotation. The third function is not present in every gearbox, and engineering references sometimes count additional transmission tasks, so “three” is a useful summary rather than a universal classification.
What Are the Three Main Functions of a Gearbox?
1. Transfer motion and power
Gears connect a driving shaft to a driven shaft. Teeth on meshing gears pass rotational motion between them, allowing power from an engine or motor to reach the component doing the work. UNC Charlotte’s Engineering Toolkit describes gears as toothed wheels that transmit power and motion between shafts: UNC Charlotte Engineering Toolkit.
2. Change output speed and torque
A gearbox uses gear ratios to match an input to the load. A reduction ratio makes the output turn more slowly and increases its torque; an overdrive or speed-increasing ratio raises output speed while reducing torque. Torque is the turning force applied to a shaft.
For example, TeachEngineering illustrates an 8-tooth input gear driving a 40-tooth output gear. The ratio is 1:5: the small gear makes five turns for each turn of the large gear. In this idealized example, the output turns more slowly and has greater torque. The example explains the relationship; it is not an efficiency measurement for a commercial gearbox. At a given power level, power is torque multiplied by rotational speed. A ratio that trades speed for torque does not create power. Real gearboxes deliver less power than they receive because friction and other losses occur within the drive.
3. Change rotational direction or shaft orientation when designed to do so
The gear type and layout determine how the output shaft moves relative to the input. A gear arrangement can reverse rotation, keep shafts in different orientations, or transfer rotation between angled shafts. These are design-dependent effects, not a guarantee that every gearbox changes direction.

For instance, fischertechnik shows equal-tooth bevel gears redirecting rotation by 90 degrees without changing the gear ratio. Its educational resource also gives a 4:1 spur-gear example: in that model, speed is four times slower and torque four times greater. Why some sources list more than three functions
The three-part summary is convenient for learning, but it is not the only engineering classification. P.R.N. Childs’s transmission discussion on ScienceDirect also identifies transmitting power between locations, matching speed and torque, changing rotational direction, and synchronizing motion. Some sources therefore separate tasks that a short explanation groups together, or include synchronizing the movement of components as another function. ScienceDirect: transmission system.

What the functions mean in a car
In a car, the gearbox helps the engine operate across changing driving demands by selecting ratios that alter the speed-and-torque relationship delivered downstream. The exact gearbox design and vehicle layout determine how power is routed and the orientation of the shafts; changing shaft direction is not the same thing as changing the ratio. The same basic principles apply to other machinery, where gears can connect a motor to a load that needs a different speed, torque, or shaft arrangement.
What affects gearbox performance and maintenance
A gear drive’s efficiency and durability depend on its construction and operating conditions. UNC Charlotte lists considerations such as lubrication, cleanliness, alignment, cost, and complexity. Its Engineering Toolkit states that spur gears can reach up to 99 percent efficiency; treat this as a source-specific upper bound, not a typical efficiency figure for all gearboxes. When comparing gearbox types for a particular application, relevant factors include the required output speed and torque, shaft orientation, available space, ratio range, efficiency, backdrivability, load, operating environment, cost, and maintenance needs. A hands-on gear set can make the ratio and direction effects visible: count the turns of the input and output, compare how quickly each rotates, and observe whether the shafts point in the same direction. A model is an optional learning aid, not a requirement for understanding the basic functions.
