Racing slicks are built to maximize grip on a dry track; wet-weather tires add grooves to manage water at the tire–track contact patch. As water builds up, a slick can lose grip and risk aquaplaning, while a wet tire’s channels help it keep working. There is no universal point at which one becomes faster: the crossover depends on water, track, temperature, tire design, vehicle and racing series.
What is the main difference?
A racing slick has a largely smooth tread surface. Without tread channels, more of its tread can meet a dry track, which is why slicks are designed for dry racing conditions. A wet-weather tire has moulded or cut grooves that help move water away from the contact region.

The trade-off is that grooves do not make a tire better in every condition. They enable operation in wet conditions, but tread blocks can be less resistant than a slick in dry conditions. The size of that trade-off varies with the tire and circumstances; the cited sources do not provide a universal grip figure.

A slick prioritizes dry-track grip; a wet-weather tire adds a water-management feature. That feature becomes relevant when water on the surface interferes with tire–track contact. In dry conditions, the tread blocks of an intermediate wet tire can be less resistant than slicks, as Pirelli notes. Neither description tells you that one design will win in every lap, at every temperature, or on every circuit.

How grooves change grip on a wet track
Water between tire and track can interfere with contact. Grooves give water a route away from the contact patch, helping the tire continue to work when the surface is wet. Michelin engineers have described the need for grooves even when there is only a small quantity of water, but that design explanation does not establish a universal water-depth threshold for switching tires.
If conditions become wet enough that a tire cannot maintain adequate contact, it may lose grip or aquaplane. Pirelli warns Formula 1 teams that remaining on slicks when wet tires are needed brings both risks. The precise point depends on the track and conditions, so the warning should not be read as a fixed rule based on a particular amount of rain.
That distinction matters because “wet” is not a single measurable state in the cited material. The cited material does not set a depth of standing water, rainfall rate, or other numeric trigger. A wet track may not have an even layer of water across the racing surface, and a single label cannot describe every part of a circuit. The grounded takeaway is narrower: grooves are intended to help manage water, while a slick lacks tread channels for that purpose. As water interferes more with contact, slick grip can fall and aquaplaning can become a risk.

The tread pattern is one part of a tire’s design, and performance also depends on compound, construction, temperature, surface texture, water depth, speed, load and vehicle setup. The cited sources do not quantify how much each factor changes the result. Treat the water-management explanation as a design rationale, not as a promise that a grooved tire will remain unaffected by any wet condition.
Performance comparison
| Factor | Racing slick | Wet-weather tire |
|---|---|---|
| Tread | Largely smooth | Grooved; pattern depends on tire design and applicable rules |
| Strength in the cited context | Greater grip than Formula E’s all-weather treaded tire in its intended racing context | Grooves support operation in wet conditions by moving water away from the contact region |
| Limitation | No tread channels to manage surface water; wet conditions can bring grip loss and aquaplaning risk | Intermediate tread blocks are less resistant than slicks in dry conditions, according to Pirelli; exact performance depends on design and conditions |
| Intended conditions | Dry track, when the tire is within its operating conditions | Wet track; the appropriate wet tire depends on water and series strategy |
These are qualitative distinctions, not a controlled, like-for-like performance test. The cited material does not report matched lap times, stopping distances or grip coefficients for the same car, tire conditions and track.
That missing comparison is important when interpreting claims about which tire has “more grip.” The Formula E explainer says its all-weather treaded tire has less grip than a racing slick in the intended racing context. That is a useful qualitative contrast, but it is not a measured figure that can be applied to every treaded tire or every slick. It does not specify a percentage difference, and it does not show that a slick retains its dry advantage once water compromises contact.
Likewise, the Pirelli point about intermediate tread blocks being less resistant than slicks in dry conditions describes a limitation, not a complete ranking of wet-tire performance. The sources do not provide a matched test to establish how many seconds a tire gains or loses, how braking distances compare, or how grip changes at a given water depth. If a comparison uses precise lap-time or stopping-distance numbers, it would require a test setup and results not present in the cited material.

When do teams change from slicks to wet tires?
Teams judge conditions rather than relying on one universal rain or water-depth cutoff. The track surface, the amount and distribution of water, temperature, tire construction and compound, speed, vehicle load and setup all affect performance. A choice that suits one circuit or series may not suit another.
Wet-weather tires can also include different types, such as intermediates and full-wet tires. The Pirelli Formula 1 guidance addresses transitions among slick, intermediate and wet choices, but it does not establish a switching threshold that applies across all cars and tracks. Follow the relevant series’ rules and conditions rather than treating “wet tire” as one universally interchangeable design.
This is why a question such as “How much rain makes wet tires faster?” cannot be answered with one number from the available evidence. Rainfall alone does not describe the water remaining on a particular track, and the cited sources do not provide a formula for converting rain or water depth into a tire choice. Nor do they set a universal crossover temperature. Track surface, tire design and the vehicle’s conditions matter alongside water. The useful answer is conditional: choose according to the actual conditions and the series’ available options, not a general threshold borrowed from another car or category.
There is also a distinction between whether a wet tire can operate on a damp surface and whether it is the fastest option there. Michelin’s Formula E engineer said grooves are needed to operate in wet conditions even with a small quantity of water. That statement describes the design need for grooves; it does not establish that a wet tire is faster than a slick whenever any moisture appears. The sources do not identify a single moment when the balance changes.

Intermediates and full-wet tires should not be collapsed into one generic answer. Pirelli’s guidance treats slick, intermediate and wet choices as separate options in Formula 1. The right option depends on conditions and team strategy, but the source extract does not give a universal depth or transition line between those categories. Exact rules and available tires belong to the relevant series.
Why racing series use different tire approaches
Formula 1 uses dry slicks alongside wet-weather options. Formula E has described an all-weather treaded tire intended to work across changing conditions, rather than requiring a tire change simply because the track changes from dry to wet. These are different series approaches, not a rule for motorsport as a whole.
In a 2015 Formula E explainer, Michelin Motorsport director Pascal Couasnon described the aim as getting closer to real-world use by avoiding a tire change from dry to wet, while noting that the tire had not yet encountered rain at that point and that feedback had been positive. Development engineer Estelle Perrier explained that a versatile tire needs grooves to operate in wet conditions, even with a small quantity of water. Those comments explain the design intent; they are not a current universal recommendation or a quantified slick-versus-wet test.

The Formula E example also shows why “wet-weather tire” can describe different strategies. A series may use a treaded tire designed to cover changing conditions, while another may have separate dry, intermediate and wet choices. Those strategies reflect the requirements and rules of each competition. A Formula E all-weather tire is not interchangeable with a Formula 1 intermediate or full-wet tire simply because all have grooves.
Formula E’s account of its Michelin Pilot Sport EV tire also reported a projected saving of 720 tires over a season and 50 tonnes of CO2 for that program. The page extract does not specify a publication year, and those figures are a program projection—not a general emissions result of choosing treaded tires over slicks.
That projection should be read in context. It concerns the reported tire and program, not a controlled environmental comparison of slicks and wet-weather tires. It does not show that any series would save the same number of tires or emissions by adopting an all-weather design. The source presents it as a consequence of the program’s approach; it is not a universal performance or sustainability figure.
Rules are series- and category-specific
The FIA’s Appendix J Article 279A, dated 11 June 2024, defines wet-weather tires for the category covered by that document as having a grooving rate above 25%, and dry-weather tires as having a rate below 25%. That document also prohibits slicks in its category. These definitions are not universal tire standards and should not be applied to Formula 1 or another series without checking its own regulations.
The 25% figure is a regulatory definition in that particular document, not a physical threshold at which a tire suddenly becomes a wet tire or starts to work in rain. It should not be used to calculate the grip advantage of one tire over another. The document’s restriction on slicks is also specific to its category; it does not mean slicks are prohibited throughout motorsport. For an actual competition, check its own current technical and sporting regulations for definitions, permitted tires and any restrictions.

The announcement is a useful current example of a series using both an all-weather tire and a distinct option for heavy-wet conditions. It does not publish, in the cited information, a universal water threshold for moving between them, a lap-time comparison with slicks, or fitment advice for other cars. The tire names and roles are specific to Formula E’s GEN4 competition plans and should not be taken as a general consumer product recommendation.
What this comparison does—and does not—mean for road driving
This is a comparison of motorsport tire concepts. It does not establish that racing slicks or racing wet tires are legal, safe or suitable for public-road use. Road suitability and legality depend on the tire and jurisdiction; check the applicable requirements and the vehicle manufacturer’s specifications rather than inferring road use from racing performance.

For the same reason, a racing tire category is not enough information to select a road tire. The sources describe the function of grooves in wet motorsport conditions, but do not verify road legality, consumer availability, vehicle fitment or road performance for any particular model. Do not assume that a competition tire can be used on a public road, or that a road tire’s wet-weather behavior can be inferred from this racing comparison.

The sources support a clear qualitative explanation: slicks prioritize dry-track grip; grooves help wet-weather tires manage water; and wet conditions can reduce slick grip and create aquaplaning risk. They also establish that the correct choice depends on conditions and that different series use different tire strategies and rules.
They do not support a universal winner, a precise switching threshold, or a numerical estimate of how grip, lap time or braking changes. No named statistical study directly measuring wet-versus-slick performance was found in the cited sources. A sound comparison should therefore state the context—series, tire type, conditions and vehicle—rather than present a broad claim as if it applied everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do wet-weather tires always have more grip than slicks in the rain?
Not according to a universal rule in the cited sources. Grooves help move water away from the contact region, while slicks can lose grip and risk aquaplaning when conditions are wet. The sources do not provide a matched test or a single water threshold proving when one is faster.
How much rain or standing water means it is time to switch?
The cited sources do not establish a universal rainfall or water-depth cutoff. Track surface and water distribution, temperature, tire design, vehicle and series all matter. In Formula 1, Pirelli describes slick, intermediate and wet options, but its guidance does not define one threshold applicable to every circuit.
