Waymo Vehicles Spotted Around Seattle—but Public Robotaxi Rides Aren’t Here Yet

Waymo’s camera-equipped Jaguar I-PACE vehicles are testing around the Seattle area, but the sightings do not signal a public driverless robotaxi launch.

Waymo vehicles are appearing on roads around Seattle, Bellevue and the broader Eastside—but the sightings do not mean Waymo has launched a public robotaxi service in the region. The initial Seattle-area deployment is focused on local mapping, data collection and safety testing. Seattle’s official testing record says the vehicles were being driven manually, with Waymo’s automated driving system inactive.

Where Waymo vehicles have been spotted

Waymo began expanding into the Seattle metropolitan area in September 2025. Reports identified recognizable electric Jaguar I-PACE SUVs in and around Seattle, including near the Northgate Link light-rail station, downtown Bellevue near a light-rail station and on I-405 between Seattle and the Eastside. The initial deployment was reported to involve approximately a dozen vehicles.

These locations should be understood as reported sightings and examples of the broader testing area—not as a published Waymo service map. “Seattle area” can include Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland and other nearby communities, so a sighting outside Seattle city limits is not evidence that Waymo is operating throughout the city.

Waymo’s own announcement on September 2, 2025, confirmed that it was expanding access to the broader Seattle metropolitan area and building on earlier regional experience, including testing in Kirkland in 2016 and Bellevue in 2022. Waymo’s Seattle-area announcement described the region’s wet weather and communities around the lake as part of the company’s local familiarity.

What the cars are doing

The Jaguar I-PACE vehicles carry the equipment associated with Waymo’s autonomous-driving system, including roof-mounted lidar, radar, cameras and other perception hardware. But having the sensors installed does not mean the vehicle is driving autonomously at every moment.

For the Seattle deployment, the Seattle Department of Transportation’s testing record identifies Waymo’s listed activity as manual data collection. In that activity, a human drives while the company gathers information about roads, traffic, weather, maps and unusual driving situations. The automated driving system is inactive.

That information can help Waymo prepare its software and operating procedures for local conditions. Seattle presents a demanding mix of rain, hills, steep grades, dense urban streets, narrow residential roads, transit stations, cyclists, pedestrians, freeways and suburban arterials. Testing in the region does not prove that Waymo has solved every one of those challenges; it means the company is collecting and validating the information needed to address them.

Testing is not the same as driverless operation

Several different activities are often described loosely as “autonomous-vehicle testing”:

  • Intended for ages 3-6 years; requires 4 AA batteries; batteries included for demo purposes only; new batteries recommended for regular use
  • Manual data collection: A human drives and the automated driving system is not active.
  • Autonomous testing with a safety driver: The automated system may be engaged, but a trained human monitors the vehicle and can take control.
  • Driverless testing: The vehicle operates without a human needed to control it during the test.
  • Commercial robotaxi service: Members of the public can request and pay for rides within an operating service area.

The Seattle record specifically describes Waymo’s vehicles as fully manually driven for data collection. A person visible in the driver’s seat should therefore not automatically be described as a passenger—or as proof that the car is operating autonomously. That person may be a test driver, mapping operator or other Waymo employee.

Can Seattle residents book a Waymo ride?

There is no verified evidence in the available sources that Waymo has opened Seattle-area rides to the general public. Waymo’s current city-status page places Seattle under “Up Next”, separate from the markets listed under “Serving Riders In.”

In practical terms, seeing a Waymo vehicle in Seattle does not mean Seattle residents can currently summon one through the Waymo app. There is also no announced launch date in the reviewed sources.

For the latest status, check Waymo’s city updates and the company’s main updates page rather than relying on a road sighting or social-media photograph.

What rules apply in Seattle?

Seattle requires a Street Use permit for autonomous-vehicle testing on city streets. The city’s stated requirements include advance notice, clearly visible company logos, test-driver training certification, public contact information and outreach, first-responder interaction information, proof of insurance, and collision and moving-violation reporting as required by Washington law.

Where autonomous testing is conducted, Seattle’s requirements also address having a human driver capable of taking control. Washington law permits private companies and vehicle manufacturers to test autonomous vehicles on public roads under the applicable state framework, while Seattle maintains local oversight through its permitting process. Seattle’s autonomous-vehicle policy page explains that testing permission is separate from authorization to run a commercial driverless transportation service.

The legal gap between testing and a robotaxi launch

Waymo can collect local data under testing rules without having authorization to operate a fully autonomous taxi business. Those are different regulatory milestones.

Before a commercial driverless service could begin, Waymo would need to complete its local testing and comply with applicable city and state requirements. The company would also need to establish an operating service area and procedures covering matters such as insurance, incident reporting, accessibility and interaction with first responders.

  • Light Up Toy Cars – An easy on/off switch activates multicolor LED wheels inside the transparent tires, and included batteries light them up out of the package.
  • Kids Hand-Friendly Size – Each truck measures 6.5 × 4 × 3.5 inches and has a chunky shape that's easy for children to grip during hands-on vehicle play.
  • ABS Construction – The ABS shell and reinforced axles support hands-on monster truck play during indoor or outdoor driving and racing.
  • Gift Set for Ages 3+ – Two trucks in different colors support racing or sharing, making this a 3-year-old boy birthday gift; colors may vary among black, red, blue, and yellow.

The larger unresolved issue is Washington’s framework for autonomous-vehicle services. Bellevue transportation officials previously said that full commercial deployment depended on state legislation authorizing autonomous-vehicle services. That does not mean autonomous vehicles are simply illegal in Washington: testing is permitted under specified conditions, while commercial operation without a human driver raises separate authorization questions.

Seattle Waymo status

Checked August 18, 2026

  • Testing and data collection: Confirmed by Seattle’s official record.
  • Public driverless rides: Not confirmed.
  • Waymo city-list status: Seattle appears under “Up Next,” not “Serving Riders In.”
  • Public launch date: Not announced in the reviewed sources.

Because service areas and regulatory decisions can change, this status should be checked against Waymo’s current city listing and Seattle’s permit information when reading or updating the article.

What to do if you encounter one

Drive normally and obey the same traffic laws you would around any other vehicle. Do not follow, crowd, obstruct or deliberately provoke the Waymo car, and do not photograph it while driving. If it stops or behaves cautiously, leave extra space and avoid assuming that one maneuver reveals the system’s overall capabilities.

If you witness a dangerous incident, report it through the appropriate local or company channel. Record the date, location and direction of travel, and preserve video only if it was captured safely and lawfully.

The bottom line

The sensor-covered Jaguars are a real sign that Waymo is preparing for possible future operations in the Seattle region. They are not, by themselves, proof of a robotaxi launch. Based on Seattle’s official record, the initial vehicles were being driven manually for data collection, and Waymo’s public city listing still categorized Seattle as an upcoming market rather than a place where riders could book trips.
