Short answer: In a large San Francisco comparison covering March 25 through April 25, 2025, the average Waymo fare was $20.43, compared with $15.58 for UberX and $14.44 for Lyft. That put Waymo about 31% above Uber and 41% above Lyft in that sample.
That does not mean Waymo is always the most expensive option. But it does show that many riders have been willing to pay a meaningful premium for a driverless, private, app-based ride. The premium also narrowed in a later Bay Area comparison, suggesting that Waymo pricing is becoming more competitive rather than remaining permanently fixed above Uber and Lyft.

The clearest evidence: Waymo was substantially more expensive in San Francisco
The strongest apples-to-apples pricing evidence comes from Obi, which collected nearly 90,000 ride-offer records in San Francisco from March 25 through April 25, 2025. The comparison looked at Waymo, UberX, and Lyft’s standard service at the same times and on comparable routes.

Those are average offers, not a universal Waymo price list. A particular trip could produce a different result because fares change with the route, time, demand, available vehicles, promotions, fees, and other conditions.

Still, the size of the difference is large enough to support the basic claim: during that period, Waymo often charged more for a comparable Bay Area ride, and riders continued to book it.
The premium was largest when demand was highest
Obi found that the gap became especially visible during peak-demand periods. At peak times, Waymo averaged roughly $11 more than Lyft and nearly $9.50 more than Uber in the first comparison.
Waymo also showed more hourly price variation than either traditional rideshare service. Obi reported a standard deviation of $2.77 for Waymo’s hourly fares, compared with about $1 for Lyft. That pattern is consistent with a service whose price is strongly affected by the number of available vehicles relative to requests.
This matters because the question is not simply whether a Waymo car has a driver. The question is how many driverless cars are available at the exact moment a rider requests one. A relatively small fleet facing heavy demand can produce a higher offer even when the vehicle itself has no human behind the wheel.
Short Waymo trips can look especially expensive
The headline premium is most pronounced on short urban trips. A short ride still has pickup, dispatch, access, and fleet-operation costs, but those costs are spread over fewer miles or kilometres. That makes the price-per-distance figure look disproportionately high.
In Obi’s shortest distance bucket, the reported average price per kilometre was $26.46 for Waymo, compared with $19.31 for Uber and $18.93 for Lyft. In the longer 4.3-to-9.3-kilometre bucket, the figures fell to $3.50 for Waymo, $2.86 for Uber, and $2.59 for Lyft.
These figures should not be read as a normal fare for every kilometre of a trip. They are averages within distance buckets, and the short-trip result is heavily influenced by fixed costs. The useful takeaway is narrower: Waymo’s relative premium may be much easier to notice on a quick downtown ride than on a longer journey.
By late 2025, the gap had narrowed—but it had not disappeared
A later Obi comparison points to convergence. The study simulated more than 94,000 ride requests in the San Francisco Bay Area between November 27, 2025, and January 1, 2026. Its average offers were:

Compared with the earlier sample, Waymo’s average fare fell 3.62%, while Uber’s rose by 12% and Lyft’s by 7%. The result was a much smaller Waymo premium over Uber and a narrower, though still substantial, premium over Lyft.
That is important context for anyone repeating the older “Waymo costs 40% more” figure. It was a defensible description of one 2025 sample, but it should not be presented as a permanent or nationwide rule. The newer data suggests that the relationship can change as fleet availability, competition, demand, and rider familiarity change.
Obi’s CEO interpreted the narrowing gap as a possible sign that the novelty effect was weakening in the Bay Area and that Waymo may need to price more competitively as the service matures. That is an analyst interpretation, not confirmation of a specific Waymo pricing strategy.
Why would anyone pay more for a driverless ride?
Waymo is not selling only transportation from one address to another. It is also selling a different passenger experience:
- No driver interaction: Riders do not need to make conversation, explain the route, or manage the social expectations of a conventional rideshare.
- A private cabin: The passenger gets a space without an onboard driver.
- A distinctive sense of control: Waymo’s app and in-car passenger screen let riders follow the trip, while the company provides an in-app path to support.
- The novelty and convenience of autonomy: For some customers, riding in a fully autonomous vehicle is itself a benefit worth paying for.
Waymo describes its service as fully autonomous. In the company’s stated user flow, a rider requests a car through the app, unlocks it, follows the trip on the passenger screen, and contacts support when needed.
Obi’s April 2025 survey found that 70% of people who had taken a Waymo ride said they preferred a driverless car to a traditional rideshare or taxi. That is evidence of meaningful product appeal, but it is not evidence that every rider prefers Waymo or that riders consider it universally safer. The same research found that safety remained a concern.
Waymo also says its Driver has accumulated more than 200 million fully autonomous miles on public roads. That is a company-reported operating metric, not an independent audit of the entire service and not, by itself, a comparison proving superior safety.

The strongest answer to “why would people pay more?” is continued paid usage. Waymo said its service exceeded 15 million rides during 2025, more than tripling its annual volume from the previous year.

In March 2026, TechCrunch reported that Waymo was providing approximately 500,000 paid robotaxi rides per week across 10 U.S. cities. That was up from approximately 50,000 weekly rides in May 2024.
Those figures show that a substantial customer base is willing to pay for Waymo rides. They do not show that every customer accepted a premium, that every Waymo fare was higher, or that the company is profitable. Some riders may have received promotions. Others may have chosen Waymo when its offer was close to—or below—the competing alternatives. Usage volume also does not reveal how much each rider values autonomy or what price would cause that rider to switch.
The careful conclusion is therefore about revealed behavior: people are booking and taking Waymo rides at scale even though matched observations have often shown higher prices. That demonstrates product demand, not a precise measure of willingness to pay.
A driverless car still has expensive operating costs
It is tempting to assume that eliminating the driver should immediately make every ride cheaper. The economics are not that simple.
A robotaxi operator still has to pay for the vehicle, sensors, mapping, software development, charging, maintenance, depots, insurance, fleet operations, customer support, regulatory compliance, and remote assistance. It also has to recover the cost of developing and operating an autonomous-driving system.
Those costs can be spread across more trips if a fleet becomes larger and busier. But during the scaling phase, a limited number of vehicles and expensive technical infrastructure can make the cost structure very different from that of a conventional rideshare marketplace.
Waymo’s observed premium does not prove that autonomous rides cost more to operate than human-driven rides. The available fare comparisons do not establish Waymo’s unit economics, margins, or profitability. They show only what customers were offered at particular times in particular markets.

Waymo’s own fare guidance says a trip price can depend on a minimum fare, distance, duration, demand, vehicle availability, location, advance booking, tolls, fees, surcharges, promotions, and other changes. The company directs riders to the app for the current estimate.

That makes geography essential. Waymo’s official materials list service in markets including Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Austin and Atlanta have used Uber as the booking channel for Waymo service.
The booking channel changes the comparison a rider sees. In many markets, a customer may compare a Waymo offer in the Waymo app with UberX and Lyft in their respective apps. In Austin or Atlanta, the rider may encounter Waymo through Uber instead. It is not safe to assume that a Waymo ride can be requested through Uber everywhere in the United States.
Availability also changes over time, and a service listed in a metro area may not be available at every address or hour. Riders should check the live app estimate rather than rely on a national average or an old screenshot.

The practical rule is to compare Waymo, Uber, and Lyft fares before booking. Enter the same pickup and destination in each applicable app as close together in time as possible, then record the total displayed price and estimated pickup time.
- Use the same origin and destination. A small change in the pickup pin can alter the route, pickup difficulty, tolls, or availability.
- Compare equivalent service tiers. The Bay Area study compared Waymo with UberX and Lyft’s standard service, not with premium options such as Uber Black or Lyft’s higher-end tiers.
- Check the timestamp. Prices can move while you are comparing them, particularly during commute periods, events, bad weather, or other demand spikes.
- Look beyond the headline fare. Include tolls, fees, surcharges, promotions, and any advance-booking effects shown in the estimate.
- Consider the pickup time. A cheaper ride that arrives substantially later may not be the better value for an airport connection, appointment, or time-sensitive trip.
- Repeat the comparison for short trips. The Waymo premium can be more noticeable on short rides because fixed costs are spread over less distance.
This process will not reproduce Obi’s research exactly. It is simply the most reliable way for an individual rider to answer the question that matters: what does each service cost for this trip, at this time, in this city?

Waymo can be a rational choice even when its fare is higher if the rider values the experience enough. That may include a private cabin, no driver interaction, the ability to try autonomous transportation, or a preference for the way Waymo handles the trip.
The premium is harder to justify when the trip is short, demand is high, the price gap is large, or the rider cares primarily about getting from point A to point B at the lowest cost. Uber or Lyft may be the better choice when their standard fare is meaningfully lower and the additional Waymo experience has little value to that passenger.

What happens to Waymo prices as the fleet grows?
The late-2025 and early-2026 comparison gives a more balanced outlook than the original headline. Waymo’s average fare was lower in the later sample, while Uber and Lyft averages increased, so competition appears to be narrowing the gap in at least that Bay Area data.
Further scaling could reduce the effect of limited vehicle supply and allow fixed operating costs to be spread across more rides. More competition could also pressure Waymo to keep fares close to conventional rideshare prices. If the driverless experience remains differentiated and demand stays strong, however, Waymo may continue charging a premium in some situations.
The eventual outcome will probably vary by city. Fleet size, local regulation, app distribution, competition, trip lengths, airport access, and rider familiarity can all affect the result. A Bay Area observation cannot be used as a national fare forecast.
