A Tesla Cybertruck that went into the water during a Jet Ski launch attempt at Ventura Harbor was fully submerged when crews arrived on the morning of March 10, 2025. A diver attached it to a tow truck, and multiple agencies coordinated the recovery. Authorities reported no injuries.
How the Cybertruck ended up in the harbor
The incident happened Monday morning, March 10, at Ventura Harbor in California. The Los Angeles Times reported that Harbor Patrol officers spotted the vehicle near the boat launch shortly before 11 a.m. and that it was in water Shevitz estimated to be eight feet deep.

According to the Times, TowBoatUS Ventura captain Carson Shevitz relayed the driver’s account: after launching a Jet Ski, the driver meant to put the Cybertruck in drive but accidentally selected reverse, sending it down the ramp and into the harbor. That is the driver’s reported explanation, not a cause independently established in the available coverage.
How crews recovered it
By the time crews arrived, the truck was completely submerged. Shevitz dived in and attached the front of the vehicle to a tow truck, according to the Times; ABC7 also reported that a diver connected it to a tow truck. Storyful’s video listing, which credits Jacob Barrick and identifies the Ventura Harbor Launch Ramp as the filming location, shows the submerged truck before firefighters winched it out.

The Times reported that the recovery took less than two hours and involved the Ventura City Fire Department, Ventura Harbor Patrol, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Tesla and fire officials were also involved in planning around the vehicle’s lithium-ion battery.
Why battery safety was part of the response
Shevitz told the Times that his team saw no bubbling or hissing—signs Tesla engineers had warned could indicate a battery releasing gas. After the truck was removed, Tesla reportedly advised establishing about 45 feet of defensible space around it. Field engineers considered it safe enough to transport to a Tesla service center.

Those reported observations and precautions describe this recovery; they do not show that the Cybertruck was undamaged or safe to drive, and they should not be treated as guidance for handling a submerged electric vehicle. The Times quoted Shevitz describing the uncertainty at the outset: “When I first heard that it’s a Cybertruck, I immediately thought of the batteries,” he said. “It wasn’t an ‘oh cool,’ it was an ‘oh great,’ because there’s a lot of unknown things we have to figure out.”

ABC7 reported that authorities said no one was hurt. Its account also noted water pouring from the truck after it was brought ashore. The available reporting does not establish the owner’s identity, the truck’s exact configuration, the extent of damage, an insurance outcome, or whether it returned to service.

The Times said this was the third submerged vehicle TowBoatUS Ventura had helped retrieve in the preceding 12 months, and the first Cybertruck—a count specific to that local team, not a broader measure of submerged-vehicle incidents.
Elon Musk had written in a 2022 post, as quoted by the Times, that the Cybertruck “will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes & even seas that aren’t too choppy.” That past statement is not evidence that the vehicle is designed or safe to operate as a boat; the Ventura incident was a recovery, not a demonstration of boating capability.
